Hello, I'm trying to build boost on our SGI Onyx4 and am running into some problems. I've tried looking up some documentation for configuring the build-system a bit better, but couldn't find much. I don't have the time to dig into it and find it out myself, especially since building boost isn't my ultimate goal for this exercise, so I'm hoping you can help me out here I'm getting (a lot of occurances of) three errors throughout the build: 1) the indicated type is incomplete std::basic_istream<charT> m_is; // stream for parsing numbers. Not sure about this one. Missing include somewhere or maybe SGIs STL is f00bar 2) The indicated enumeration value is out of "int" range. enum npos_type { npos = (size_type)-1 }; I assume it's the same problem as with IBMCPP. Don't know if MIPSpro can have 64-bits enums. 3) Threading is disabled: _SGI_MP_SOURCE is undefined If somebody could help me out with these, I'd be very grateful. My environment is IRIX 6.5.27 with MIPSpro 7.41, bjam 3.1.11 and I'm trying boost 1.33.0. I've modified the tools/build/v1/mipspro-tool.jam to use -64 and -mips4 as default. Complaint about Current Boost Build System

Hi all, Sorry for this e-mail, since it is more of a complaint. But I do feel the urge to raise this problem to the community so that some solution could be derived soon. The current build system (1.33/34 from CVS) creates subdirectories for each variant/ subvariant specified in the BUILD environment. When more user customizations are specified, the consequence of this is very deep directory structures. Nonetheless, some OSes imposes stringent limits on how long a path can go (e.g., Win2k/XP limits a path name to be 259 characters long maximum). There causes big problem with the building system when error can occur from nowhere in Boost source code itself. This constraint effectively limits how much customization a user can make (e.g., I had to remove some additional optimization/ tuning parameters for subvariants, and SUBST'ed the Boost directory in order to reduce the path name length). So my question is, why can we not be smarter in this to derive alternatives to make the directory structure shallower (or, simply reduce the length of the names of each subvariant directory)? Sorry again if this sound too demanding, but I do consider it an important usability limitation of the current Boost build system. Serializing boost::variant?

If I have a boost::variant data member I want to serialize, it looks like I'm going to have to use boost::static_visitor and boost::apply_visitor in the serialize() method. However, there is some black magic going on with the ar & dataMember; statements. Any pointers as to how I do it? Merrill

Bind, lambda and how to chain relative function calls

Hi, I would like to create a functor for calling functions in a chain like this : car.GetRigidBody().GetPosition().GetX() What is the best way to do that using bind (and lambda ?) The car.GetRigidBody() is easy : bind(&Car::GetRigidBody, &car) , but then I am a bit stuck. Note that I don't want to store the result of car.GetRigidBody(). I want the final functor to call all the functions everytime its operator() is called. So bind ( &Position::GetX, &bind ( &RigidBody::GetPosition, &bind ( &Car::GetRigidBody, &car )() )() ) would not be acceptable... Any help greatly appreciated Jacques Kerner

Tuple operator==

Michael, Thanks for the reply. You are absolutely right. I'm coming back to C++ after years of Java and I haven't been careful enough about reading the stl docs. One quibble with your solution is that I am doing an upcast not a down cast, but your solution worked perfectly for me. Newbie build problem

I too am having similar problems to Keith Weintraub with regard to failed and skipped targets. I applied the suggested addition of the Platform SDK, to the include paths, but in the process I had to reboot my machine (for unrelated reasons). Since then, I get virtually nothing actually built (quite a leap backwards really :-) The symptom I get is related to expansion of the compiler name, as the messages are all of the type: '/Zm800' is not recognised as an internal command... etc or '/nologo' is not ... The environment is Win2K with VC6 and the Intel compiler v8.0 (9 on order). The command line is bjam "-sTOOLS=intel-win32" install Now there's a certain familiarity about this problem, but at my age, memory doesn't serve me all that well. boost.thread problem

I'm a newbie to boost, and I'm trying to use boost.thread together with STLport in VC6.
