Hi Y'all, The deadline for submission of entries is technically over but I still keep getting new entries. I am extending the deadline to March 1. There's no reason to hurry, I guess. The more the better :) It's also been a busy month and I still need to setup a system for getting and tabulating the votes. Any suggestion on how to do this will be highly appreciated. Right now, I'm inclined to just do it manually. << Currently, there are 73 entries + a few more in my inbox. See: http://boost.org/more/logo_contest.htm
Cheers, -- Joel de Guzman http://www.boost-consulting.com http://spirit.sf.net

Any possibility these can be converted to icons so I can use them on my desktop? Hopefully the winning designs can come up with icon versions for this purpose. Given the high quality of submissions, maybe some can be used for some of the major key boost meta-components. (I'm refering to components that are used to make boost components) For example, to boost.book, boost.test, Robert Ramey Joel de Guzman wrote:

I suggest you update the contest page as soon as possible to indicate that the contest is extended, so we can take full advantage of the possibilities for new submissions. Also, if you haven't done so yet, I think you should post announcements to c.l.c++.m and c.l.c++. Jonathan

Done. As suggested by Dave A, I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage you all to review the logos submitted so far. See if there is something you like but think needs a tweak. You can post your comments here. I'd gladly forward your comments to the author. Regards, -- Joel de Guzman http://www.boost-consulting.com http://spirit.sf.net

Several of them are quite good, but I'm afraid that none leaps out at me as "The One". Although, I do have to admit that I kinda like the idea of a "mascot" for Boost, and as much as I hate to admit it, I kinda like the idea of "Boo, the friendly ghost". I don't know if a Pac-Man ghost would be best, or something else. But I would like to see someone submit a Boo pic to go along with the logos. Maybe it could be "Boo: the Ghost of C++ Future". ;> Dave

Well, there's lots more ghosts than that. There's Norton Ghost as well. But the name isn't "ghost". It's "Boo". ;> And eventually, even O'Reilly will have to start reusing animals. Dave

Eventually is right, as in after printing a new book each day for thirty thousand years at least. The number of animal species in existence is far greater than you imagine. Even if we take only the number of vertebrate species, which make up a mere 1% or so of the total number of animal species, I do not think that O'Reilly will run out of animals any time soon.

Oh, homo sapiens <g>. But I remember a few on the O'Reilly's covers which I would not call "cute and cuddly".

Actually, I was talking about the distinguishable species. It wouldn't go very far to use voles and moles on different covers. So really, it doesn't come down to species at all. More like orders or families. Dave

Perhaps you should join the committee so you can vote "over my dead body":-) Seriously, plenty of end-user participation on the committee helps keep C++ relevant. --Beman

Done.
As suggested by Dave A, I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage you all to review the logos submitted so far. See if there is something you like but think needs a tweak. You can post your comments here. I'd gladly forward your comments to the author.
OK, here goes :) Robert Ramey mentions icons which I think is an important point. With that in mind I think the most (only) viable alternatives right now are the "boost/blocks" by Simeon Nasilowski (39) and the pill by Succubus Interactive (50) (I don't like that '++' appears twice too much though). In the first case, the blocks with a '+' on them can be separated out as an icon which becomes instantly recognizable once people get used to seeing the logo around. In the second case, the pill can be scaled down easily enough, and the "boost ++" text could be substituted by a '+' sign on either side of the pill to maintain readability at 16x16, 32x32, 48x48 etc. Zoltan "cad" Juhasz (75) has a similar design suited to extract an icon, but the sheet(s) of paper are not in any way specifically linked to Boost and/or C++ which means the icon in itself would not make sense. If you add a '++' or something akin to that to the paper sheets I think this could be a good alternative as well. The rest of the suggestions I simply don't like at all :P (and most are close to impossible to iconify in any way that links the logo and the icon and doesn't make the latter look butt ugly). Currently I think my vote would be cast for 39, but I still feel there is that "something" missing... My 2 cents! All the best, -- Tarjei

At least the submitters have contributed something. If you are going to be rude, then I would suggest keeping your opinions to yourself. I for one think that the huge selection of logos to choose from is wonderful. We are very lucky to have people willing to take the time to design so many logos so that we can choose the best one. My personal thanks to each and every logo submitter. Christopher Diggins

I was going to say I didn't find the original post rude, but then I realized I stopped reading before I got to the 'butt ugly' part. Yes, rude indeed! Jonathan

Sorry guys, I didn't mean to be rude at all (I see how it may read to people now though). I was not referring to the logos themselves (generally they are of good quality, and I fully respect the work people have put into them), but rather how it would look if you tried to squash them into an icon. Sorry again, no offense intended. -- Tarjei

Please be reminded that being able to iconify the logo is not a requirement. It is unfair to change the requirements midstream. Please be kind. I agree with Christopher Diggins. I'm also impressed by the wide selection. For that, we should be thankful to those who took the trouble twiddling pixels and vectors. Here are some comments on what I see thus far: #21 I don't think pushing the "C" up so high is beneficial. "boost" is too far below the "C." Either lower the "C" so more is in the image, or just close the gap. #29 The farther right you go, the more attractive these logos are. The leftmost, which would be the result in low color contexts, is too plain. So, while I really like the fourth image, I'm not certain it will scale down in size and color well enough. #38 These are interesting. I think the problem is that there's no "C" block to go with the "+" blocks. The good thing is that you can omit "boost" and get something that can shrink pretty small. The only question is how far you can push it (icon size) and still recognize it. #42 This is interesting, but the face used for "Boost" should be simpler. The fine lines in the "C++" aren't likely to scale down well. #49 Is rather simple and attractive, but how does it look in fewer colors or really small? #50 Is quite artsy, but I don't like the "++/++" part. Just putting "boost" on the pill might be sufficient. How does it look with fewer colors and really small? #61 The idea of a mascot is appealing, but a 'possum just doesn't do it for me. An eagle would work (soaring to new heights), maybe a cheetah (speed development time). Also, the "C++" could be a logo on the top of the laptop rather than formed from the tail. #68 This one doesn't scale down well, except to leave just "boost" in the image, but there's nothing wrong with picking a particular typeface, writing "Boost" in that face, and calling it a logo. Many companies do that. Unfortunately, that's really tough to translate to smaller image sizes and you have to avoid making it too staid. Instead of "C++ | The next chapter" (which should have title case), how about "C++ on Steroids?" -- Rob Stewart stewart@sig.com Software Engineer http://www.sig.com Susquehanna International Group, LLP using std::disclaimer;

Sorry I didn't notice this comment earlier. This one was inspired by Erik Wien's early sketches. I don't really like it anymore; I prefer #29.

I like it! See entry 88. (I misspelled "steroids") Jonathan

One thing I would like to say is, my only reluctance on the part of some of the logos is that while they are quite beautiful, they have too many colors to know what they would look like as a small icon. I think a good example would be the Apple logo. You have the original version, which is quite simple, quite easy to render in many different media, but also quite amenable to stylization. Then you have the "modern" version, which is the same thing, but made to have a 3D appearance with some shiny reflections. I would be more likely to vote for entries that display some potential for such "dual use". Granted, we don't have the same marketing needs as Apple, par se, but something that would look good both in small, simple (i.e. "low color") contexts as well as hi-color, hi-res would fit the variety of contexts in which the Boost logo might find itself. What that means is that logos that have some very fine detail might look good at their original scale, but might lose their impact when scaled down. Logos that depend on extensive 3D shading for effect might also look good in a hi-color scenario, but would be more convincing if a low-color alternative were provided as well. Dave

While there is mention of optionally supply iconic versions of the submitted logo, suitability to an icon was not part of the requirements. Is it fair to change the requirements now, especially given that there is a prize waiting for the winner? (You can certainly vote with icons in mind if you like, but that doesn't make it fair.) -- Rob Stewart stewart@sig.com Software Engineer http://www.sig.com Susquehanna International Group, LLP using std::disclaimer;

Well, I'm not stating it as a requirement. I'm stating it as my personal preference. And the whole question of "fairness" in voting is a can of worms that we probably don't want to get into. Doubtless other people feel differently about the logos than I do and will reflect that in their own vote. Dave

No, it isn't fair. The requirements are clear. Supplying an iconic version is not part of the requirement. And no, it's not fair and it's too late to change the requirements now. Regards, -- Joel de Guzman http://www.boost-consulting.com http://spirit.sf.net
