I was using the cvs checkout URL. I'll have to look at the above one when I get home.

The idea is to give the simplest possible instructions that will get nearly everyone going. I think we need a follow-up document that has all the details.
Yes, I think a link from this document would be great. I remember the first time I built boost I was lost trying to figure out how to reduce the number of built variants.
Maybe just how to build the release variant (which is what a starter would be most interested in, I would think)
I wouldn't count on that. Also, unless building her own code with -DNDEBUG, using the release variant could potentially cause ODR issues.
