[logo] what I prefer

Hi, I wanted to share my thoughts on the logos currently submitted. But first I want to state couple things that IMO worth considering (this is driven my experience, for last release I was tried for month to invent some kind of logo for Boost.Test and obviously failed): 1. IMO logo should be transparent - essentially it should work with most pastel and white colors 2. The shouldn't be border - logo should be natural part of the page 3. No funny fonts - in long run it doesn't work 4. No funny/complex objects - it maybe fun to draw. fun to look first N times, but then it became annoying. This criteria would eliminate a lot of current submissions 6. Logo should be scalable - in a sense that it should work ok in different resolutions 7. There preferable should be something beyond the text - plain text with minimal variations doesn't initiate any recognizability Here couple logos I believe worth considering (This is not an order of my preference): 1. #99 - very solid submission. Look professional, simple. ++ could be used for icon. IMO It bring slogan: boost - blur(beyond, extend, e.t.c) the bounds of C++. May be some extra graphic symbol could be added 2. #10 - simple recognizable, easily scalable (including icon), brings a connotation of ++. Though I would definitely change a colors. May be some extra text are in order 3. #67 Even we kinda agreed that it bring unwanted associations the connotation of building blocks seems good. May be we could reorder'em differently: o o o o o o o ooo or o Also I believe it should be transparent That's about it. Genandiy

I disagree in part. I think you're suggesting that there should be no background shading, but rather than the background of the page on which the logo appears should "come through" the logo. That's a good idea depending upon the background you put it over. It means the logo must use pastels and not more saturated colors, and it means that a cool logo will look even odder over a warm background. Why the limitation? I can understand it looking good against a white background because that's the usual web page background color. The rest I don't follow.
2. The shouldn't be border - logo should be natural part of the page
I disagree. I don't think there's a good reason to limit them this way. Some, by nature of their coloring have intrinsic borders. Some have borders as design elements. Consider the Infiniti logo that's been mentioned repeatedly here: there is a distinct border. Is it a bad logo as a result?
3. No funny fonts - in long run it doesn't work
I'm not sure which fonts you would classify as funny.
4. No funny/complex objects - it maybe fun to draw. fun to look first N times, but then it became annoying. This criteria would eliminate a lot of current submissions
Agreed.
6. Logo should be scalable - in a sense that it should work ok in different resolutions
Agreed.
7. There preferable should be something beyond the text - plain text with minimal variations doesn't initiate any recognizability
Yes, there must be a graphical element which is, itself, really the logo. The text is an adornment that we can use in common cases like the Boost home page, but not necessarily on all other web and documentation pages.
1. #99 - very solid submission. Look professional, simple. ++ could be used for icon. IMO It bring slogan: boost - blur(beyond, extend, e.t.c) the bounds of C++. May be some extra graphic symbol could be added
I don't like it specifically because it looks blurry! I can't focus on it. Unlike the IBM logo, in which the letters appear striped, this one just seems to be vibrating.
2. #10 - simple recognizable, easily scalable (including icon), brings a connotation of ++. Though I would definitely change a colors. May be some extra text are in order
I dislike this one because I find myself struggling to identify the shape. Is it a sphere? Is it a pair of T's, X's, crosses, or plus signs? What is the significance of whatever the shapes are being drawn apart in the middle? It is just visually frustrating to me.
3. #67 Even we kinda agreed that it bring unwanted associations the connotation of building blocks seems good. May be we could reorder'em differently: o o o o o o o ooo or o
There is nothing sacrosanct about the current arrangement of blocks, so this is a good idea (with apologies to Simeon's vision for the logo). Perhaps a drop shadow arrangement of blocks in the form of +'s would work: XX XXoo XXXXXXoo XXXXXXoo XXoo XXoo oo Where the X's are blocks in a more saturated color and the o's are blocks in a less saturated (shadow) color.
Also I believe it should be transparent
I'd gladly look at a transparent version, but I don't understand the motivation. -- Rob Stewart stewart@sig.com Software Engineer http://www.sig.com Susquehanna International Group, LLP using std::disclaimer;

I meant It should work with pastel and white colors as background. SOme people using some graying. bluish colors as background.

I meant there should not be one big rectangle border around the whole logo (including text and graphic symbols)
3. No funny fonts - in long run it doesn't work
I'm not sure which fonts you would classify as funny.
#100, #91, #57, #56 #40 for example

It could be anything you want. It does (and shouldn't) matter. I like it's simplicity and symmetry. Gennadiy

Why should our logo have to look good against other's backgrounds? If Boost has a color scheme which specifies white backgrounds, for example, then that's all we should require. As I stated above, to require it to look good against various pastel backgrounds means the logo must not use saturated colors. While a somewhat saturated warm logo would look fine against warm pastels, a similarly saturated cool logo wouldn't (and vice versa).
2. The shouldn't be border - logo should be natural part of the page

That I can agree with.

Ah, "funny" as in odd or unusual. I agree that those fonts don't look professional.
1. #99 - very solid submission. Look professional, simple. ++ could be used for icon. IMO It bring slogan: boost - blur(beyond, extend, e.t.c) the bounds of C++. May be some extra graphic symbol could be added

I told you why. It is blurry and I can't focus on it. It vibrates leaving me uncomfortable when looking at it. That's hardly the impression you want Boost to make is it?
2. #10 - simple recognizable, easily scalable (including icon), brings a connotation of ++. Though I would definitely change a colors. May be some extra text are in order

Most of those things are meaningless in the context of Boost and its libraries. Thus, the ambiguity is distracting. Dave's suggestions on altering it might prove to make this an attractive choice, however. -- Rob Stewart stewart@sig.com Software Engineer http://www.sig.com Susquehanna International Group, LLP using std::disclaimer;

I agree with Rob. It creates "cognitive dissonance" for me. Plus we want to project solidity ;-) -- Dave Abrahams Boost Consulting www.boost-consulting.com

This is ambiguous, I think. Do you mean that the logo should use mostly pastels and white, or it should look good for almost any pastel and white color combinations?
2. The shouldn't be border - logo should be natural part of the page
I agree.
3. No funny fonts - in long run it doesn't work
I agree, except that it doesn't seem to be a big problem with the submitted logos, so maybe we have different senses of font humor.
4. No funny/complex objects - it maybe fun to draw. fun to look first N times, but then it became annoying. This criteria would eliminate a lot of current submissions
And a lot of successful logos, too; e.g., http://www.michelin.com/ http://www.fox.co.uk/ http://www.paramount.com/
6. Logo should be scalable - in a sense that it should work ok in different resolutions
This is already a requirement.
7. There preferable should be something beyond the text - plain text with minimal variations doesn't initiate any recognizability

This is too complex, IMO.
2. #10 - simple recognizable, easily scalable (including icon), brings a connotation of ++. Though I would definitely change a colors. May be some extra text are in order
I think I rejected that one without looking very closely. I think black is a bad choice; it looks better with a deep blue (see attached)
3. #67 Even we kinda agreed that it bring unwanted associations the connotation of building blocks seems good. May be we could reorder'em differently: o o o o o o o ooo or o
I agree that building blocks have a lot of potential. Jonathan begin 666 boost.png MB5!.1PT*&@H````-24A$4@```/ ```"M" (````!)V7L````!&=!34$``+&. 1. IMO logo should be transparent - essentially it should work with most pastel and white colors
This is ambiguous, I think. Do you mean that the logo should use mostly pastels and white, or it should look good for almost any pastel and white color combinations?
It should work with pastel and white backgrounds
4. No funny/complex objects - it maybe fun to draw. fun to look first N times, but then it became annoying. This criteria would eliminate a lot of current submissions
And a lot of successful logos, too; e.g.,
http://www.michelin.com/ http://www.fox.co.uk/ http://www.paramount.com/
I don't think it's fair to compare with an entertainment companies logo Gennadiy

2. #10 - simple recognizable, easily scalable (including icon), brings a connotation of ++. Though I would definitely change a colors. May be some extra text are in order
I think I rejected that one without looking very closely. I think black is a bad choice; it looks better with a deep blue (see attached)
I like it. Could you make a variation with gray at the back? And black text. And one with text like in #99. Gennadiy

The symbol looks like it's trying to be two plus signs with pointy ends, mapped onto a sphere. But the sphere mapping isn't quite done right. If we could fix that, I think this could be a real candidate. There are all kinds of obvious experiments to do after that, like perhaps adding a little shading to enhance the 3D effect, or going the other direction, and make it more linear and drawing-like. -- Dave Abrahams Boost Consulting www.boost-consulting.com

Great. I have to say, I probably didn't consider it enough. I think maybe 67 was most appealing because its execution was top-notch. There are few other logos in the contest that were as polished. This just goes to show that a good idea with sub-par execution will probably make a negative impression on at least some people. -- Dave Abrahams Boost Consulting www.boost-consulting.com

True.. In my case it was a matter of time.. That one was one of the firsts one I did, when there was no contest. So I wasn't really trying to make it polished, just to get the concept out. This brings up the question of what we do about updated logos? Do we replace the existing entries? Do we have another contest? Do we add another entry? Not sure what is really fair to the other contributors. -- -- Grafik - Don't Assume Anything -- Redshift Software, Inc. - http://redshift-software.com -- rrivera/acm.org - grafik/redshift-software.com - 102708583/icq

I guess it depends on what we are looking for. Are we looking for the best we can get, or the best of this crop of submissions. The original rules implied that the highest vote getter among the current submissions would win, but what if the majority does not like the highest vote getter, and wants to have another round of refinement, and vote again? I can not even draw stick people, so I am not entered. I also can not contribute much from an artistic perspective beyond "I like this, I don't like that." However, I'd be a bit disappointed to see us settle on something if we think we can do better. I'm all for fair, but I also think we need to consider the implications of keeping something that is not what we really want versus trying to change the logo in another year. We have rejected library submissions before, with the idea that they can be reconsidered at a later date. Is that an option for the logo? If, at the end of the voting, we are still unsettled, can we punt and ask for a new contest with revised submissions?

I say we let the contest finish as planned, since its almost over (considering when it was first announced). If the selected logo can't be adjusted so that most of are happy with it, we can allow people to modify their submitted designs and submit completely new ideas. The logo contest rules didn't say that the selected logo waw guaranteed to be used for any specific amount of time, so I don't think the winner can complain if the logo is not used on the website, or if it is only used for a few days.
True. We did promise the winner a T-shirt ;-)
I think you promised a book either.
