That's okay for simple things, but for any serious printing work you need to know you're talking to a printer. For example, you may need to embed postscript in your output stream.

I can think of two ways. First, the PDF can reflect what would be printed if the printer did not support postscript (which not all printers do). Second, PDF can itself contain embedded postscript. -- Dave Harris, Nottingham, UK
