Future of Boost Windows Installers

Hi, As many of you already know, I'm going to work at Apple in late February, and BoostPro is closing its doors. For many years, the Boost Getting Started Guide has suggested that Windows users pop over to BoostPro's website and use the latest installer to get Windows binaries. We'd like to donate to the community the technology used to build those installers. If anyone would like to pick up the job of creating them, we'd be happy to offer guidance. Right now I'm on a plane where an uplink to GitHub is creeping along at 4KB/s, so I've been pushing the stuff up in bits and pieces and the latest stuff isn't up there, but it's going to http://github.com/boostpro/installer and will be complete within 24 hours. Whatever happens with this installer code, someone is going to need to update the Getting Started Guide, either to point at the installer's new home, or to remove references to it. -- Dave Abrahams BoostPro Computing Software Development Training http://www.boostpro.com Clang/LLVM/EDG Compilers C++ Boost

That's now done. Since Tom Kent has been making binaries for some time now, it'd be awesome if he'd consider taking over this responsibility (hint, hint).
Whatever happens with this installer code, someone is going to need to update the Getting Started Guide, either to point at the installer's new home, or to remove references to it.

If this still needs to be done, please create a ticket and assign it to me.

I very much hope that this will be done from a Windows-centric users view - the previous version made assumptions about *nixy things and words that are entirely unjustified for Micro$ofties who have an expectation of using GUI throughout. It led to a long trail of woeful cries for help (and consumed a lot of support effort). Even using Git will cause trouble for many novice users. And it would be good if Ubuntu users using NetBeans and CodeBlocks could have an easy ride too. There will be very many of them now that C++ works on the Raspberry Pi, and they will immediately need Boost. I hope we can *keep revising the instructions* until it becomes clear from the absence of cries for help that we have got it right. Paul --- Paul A. I'm not going to rework the documentation, just update it. If that's wanted then someone else will need to volunteer. I'd probably be the wrong person to do it anyway, as I don't use windows much.

It won't mention git at all. It's aimed at people using the stable version.

When Git is properly going, I'll volunteer to help with the Windows documentation. Paul --- Paul A. Bristow, Prizet Farmhouse, Kendal LA8 8AB UK +44 1539 561830 07714330204 pbristow@hetp.u-net.com

Excuse me? Did it drift into that condition? When I wrote the GSG I put a lot of effort into making sure there was a Micro$ofty version for windows users, and it was very quickly adjusted until there were almost no cries of confusion, so I'm very surprised to hear this. -- Dave Abrahams
