RE: [boost] Proper threading (Was: Formal review of "Output Forma tters" library beginstoday )

Hi,
I would like to start with resolution. I vote NOT to accept this submission.
Gentlemen, may I ask that you use mailers which preserve correct threading? In particular, in review of the outfmt library, each message from Reece, Robert and Gennadiy is completely unrelated to the thread, missing the "References" and "In-reply-to" headers.
This makes follow the thread a nightmare. Even web-based mailers nowdays support proper threading. What do you do to break it?
I use Outlook. In some cases it preserve "threading". In some not. Gennadiy.

Then maybe you can figure out how to make it always preserve threading? Or try some other free mailers, like the one from mozilla.org? Incorrect threading really makes discussions harder. - Volodya

Mozilla Thunderbird really rocks! I really recommend it. I can just second that! I've been using it for a long time now since they released the first betas. Stefan

Last time I used Mozilla for reading newsgroups (over a year ago) if found that it would frequently report a particular numbers of messages as unread (the number would appear in parantheses after the newsgroup name) but no messages in my inbox would by marked as unread. I could never tell whether the reported number of unread messages was an error, or if there really were some unread messages getting lost. So I switched to Outlook. Does Thunderbird use the same code as the Mozilla browser's news and email client? If so, do you know if this problem has been fixed? Jonathan

I am not sure about the code base it uses, but it appears to report the correct number of messages in the Inbox (and the subfolders I have created for the various Boost threads, using the Filters feature which rocks!) So maybe they have fixed the problem you experienced :). Regards, Reece

Unfortunately, no. I've experienced the exact same problem with ThunderBird 0.8. In the end, the only resolution was to resubscribe to the newsgroup. Don't know how the problem started, but apparently it's not a new thing.

You can fix this by editing the news rc file in the thunderbird folder. It contains lines like for example: gmane.comp.lib.boost.devel: 1-111178,111273,111274,111276,111279,111291,111357 Just canchge this to gmane.comp.lib.boost.devel: 1-111357 and it behaves normally again. By doing so, you of course also mark all messages as read, but its better than resubscribing if you have a big local archive. The fix also works for Mozilla. HTH, Markus

Fix? Seems more like a hack to me... :) But thanks a lot for the tip. I *did*, in fact, lose a rather large local archive when I resubscribed, so this'll be a life-saver, if it happens again.

Hmmm, I wouldn't say Thunderbird is perfect, but I've never experienced your problem. Stefan

Why newsgroup, instead of subscribing to the list? As a side-note, I'm really sneeky ;) I have an email address that is for subscribing to lists only. Thus, no need for news ;) Best, John -- John Torjo -- john@torjo.com Contributing editor, C/C++ Users Journal -- "Win32 GUI Generics" -- generics & GUI do mix, after all -- http://www.torjo.com/win32gui/ -- v1.4 - save_dlg - true binding of your data to UI controls! + easily add validation rules (win32gui/examples/smart_dlg)

Well, I started out using the mailing list, but I chose to receive digests which was probably a mistake.

Of course ;-)

I guess I could have one email address for each mailing list. Outlook seems to be pretty well-behaved, except for occasional concatenation of subject lines.

Do you mean Outlook Express? Are you receiving emails or do you use the gmane news server? Jeff
