The exit status is 139, which means segmentation violation. ltrace shows that for gcc 3.4.4 and for gcc 4.0.2 operator new() gets called countless times before the crash, and that for gcc 3.3.6 std::__default_alloc_template<true, 0>::allocate(unsigned int) gets called similarly often.
