I think you mean the "<:" digraph. It represents the "[" (opening square bracket) character. The official term is "alternative token" (see section 2.5 of the standard), because some of the tokens have more than two characters. (These include the bitwise and Boolean word operators, i.e. "and".) They're considered after the preprocessor (phase 3 of section 2.1), and trigraphs are done earlier than that (in phase 1).

Yep, you're absolutely right -- thanks. I didn't pay a lot of attention to the exact compiler diagnostic, just added a space and got on with it. jon
