Lars Magne Ingebrigtsen, the man behind GMane, recently told me about a new search facility: "<URL: http://rain.gmane.org/> -- it's a Xapian-powered search. It's still in beta, and recent articles aren't in its index. You can advertise it, but it's likely to be out of commission now and then as the Xapian people work on it." Now you know all.
