Interest in doing project "concept Traits library"

I know that i am running late as i had my university exams but i have been following the projects entitled under Google Summer of Code 2011. I am a student of BITS-Pilani University, India doing my B.E. in Electronics and Instrumentation. I was going through the project "concept traits library" , trying to understand it. I was able to gather much information about what it is and how it works, with some details of the functions under operator traits, mpl_ext and even Concept traits. But since their is no well defined problem statement given on the website, i was wanting to know what functions \ templates already exist as parts of the library and what are we expected to create. Please reply soon... Thnx in advance -- its a bird, its a plane, its a rocket no its Rachit

The equivalent of the operator traits of the CTL have already been done by Frederic Bron and recently been reviewed and accepted into Boost as a part of the Boost type traits library. The equivalent of the type_traits_ext of the concept traits library has already been done by me in my TTI library in the Boost sandbox. I will be asking for a review of that library shortly. I found that the mpl_ext of the CTL were not useful to me once I used the MPL metadata concept for passing metafunctions for my library. I do not know how much of the 'C++ Standard Concept Traits' or the 'Boost MPL Concept Traits' of the CTL actually works but you could take a look at that area and see what you could do with it in terms of what has already been done by Frederic Bron and myself.

Hi, The project description was succinct because the subject is well known and we were looking for students having its own proposal. That is, this is just an hint. "It would be great to finish the 3rd part and adapt it to the new libraries." I encourage you to make a concrete proposal once you have understood what needs to be adapted. Best, Vicente

Thank you Edward and Vicente. I am really looking forward to work with you people and am collecting details and working on my proposal which i shall submit soon. I have one more doubt though. Since this is a part of GSoC 2011, is there a specific place where i need to submit my proposal or i need to submit it to the mentoring organization. Hi, I think that you must use the GSoC interface (http://code.google.com/intl/fr/soc/) and add your proposal associating it to Boost. You can always post here whatever you think could give us an idea of your project. Andrew, could you give more information? Best, Vicente

Hello, Thanx again for the reply. I was also wanting to know that in the proposal, do i need to mention each and every detail about the project as in the course of action, the time-frame involved and every technical details about it. Since i am getting to realize that the CTL is a very big library and since frederic and edward have already revived the operator_traits and type_traits_ext for boost. My work would basically be to do the same i.e. develop the remaining functions for C++ standard concept trait\Boost MPL concept traits library by studying their counterparts in CTL. I have been trying to study the functions and i can not explicitly mention about each and every one of them in the proposal i.e. which one of them i will or would be able to include. Its something i will learn after i begin with the actual work. So, i would be very thankful if someone can help me out with this so i can write my proposal correctly... Hey, Having gone through a good amount of information available over the net, i would like to propose that since we all know about the need for generic programming and the value of "concepts" in programming, to implement all the concept traits functions under C++ standard concept traits into another library for boost without the imperfections with which they exist in their present form. This library will have all the necessary functions to enable the user to use the generalized components in a wide variety of situations and also for meta programming. Most of the functions in their present form have some glitches associated with them like for example... ::boost::is_assignable<T1,T2>::value , will give an error instead of a false value if the class\union T1 has no accessible assignment operator. Some more such discrepancies exist in the current form of C++ Standard concept trait library. And the idea is to re-write the entire thing without such imperfections and making it perfect. The reason i mentioned meta programming in this is that if time permits then i would like to carry the same thing to the concept part of MPL so that we have a fully functional library without any special - case errors. Please correct me if i am wrong somewhere or missing something. Your help is highly appreciated. So if I understand you are proposing to cover the C++ standard associated concepts and continue with the concepts associated to the MPL library, isn't it? As this is almost already done in Boost.ConceptTraits and needs just and adaptation to the Boost.TypeTraits/Operators and Boost.TTI, it would be great to to care of other Boost libraries. Of course I can be underestimating the work that needs to be done. Are you already familiar with the Boost environment, Boost.Build, Boost.Quickbook, ...? Have you tried to pass the test in Boost.ConceptTraits? If not, you should do it and share your experience. Best, Vicente

sorry, i missed that line where u asked me that how will i manage those issues. Its like as of now i can't give u a concrete and detailed idea of that. Its just that when i sit down to do it and i will have plenty of time on my hands, i am sure to come up with something to solve as many of those issues as possible with help of people around as well constant brainstorming with you and on other forums and taking help from elsewhere as well. I am good with getting new ideas and m sure that given the opportunity i won't disappoint because as i said its only when i actually begin with it that i would be able to know every detail about it and come up with a solution. hey vicente, i know you would be very busy this time around, but just wanted to ask something. Haven't heard from you since the proposal submission. You said that i should upload the proposal and if there are any changes required, it can be made later. I think by now most of the proposals would have been scrutinized properly. Yes sir, that is what i meant. And unfortunately i haven't had any exposure to the boost environment. Though i have been trying to study about it as much as i can since the release of the GSoC projects. And can u please tell me where i can give that boost.ConceptTraits test?
Since the last date of submission of my proposal is by tomorrow. Please reply quickly so that i can finish off things in time.
Hi,
You should sent your proposal now. You will be able to update it later if needed.

hey vicente,
i know you would be very busy this time around, but just wanted to ask something. Haven't heard from you since the proposal submission. You said that i should upload the proposal and if there are any changes required, it can be made later. I think by now most of the proposals would have been scrutinized properly. Is my proposal near making it and are there any changes required or is it that i would have to wait for the next summer?
Hi Rachit, sorry to don't following your proposal under Melange(GSoC), but reached just on Sunday to connect as a mentor hrrr. I have requested more information on Melange, so let continue the discussion there. Best, Vicente
