Notice of Intent To Redirect boost.org to boost.io
All: A consensus to launch the new Boost website was reached by both the community and the Boost Foundation. Since then, the Foundation has: * Ignored the consensus decision reached in April [1] * Prevented the C++ Alliance's attempt to secure the boost.org domain [2] * Launched the competing "Beman Project" [3] * Voted to "cut ties with the Alliance" [4] * Avoided important questions asked on the mailing list, for over a month As it is clear now that Foundation control of the boost.org domain may be harmful to Boost, the existing website will be redirected to the new website. Absent objection, this pull request to redirect boost.org to boost.io will be merged on August 5, 2024: https://github.com/boostorg/website/pull/861 Thanks [1] https://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2024/04/256602.php [2] https://cppalliance.org/pdf/Domain-Name-Purchase-Agreement.pdf [3] https://www.bemanproject.org/ [4] https://cppalliance.org/pdf/Boost-Foundation-Minutes.pdf

Since we have clearly reached an impasse, I can't think of anything better than implementing the redirect. It is rather unfortunate that we find ourselves in this situation, but progress must still be made for the benefit of the developer community and users. Matt

I agree, let's move forward, we can't wait forever to execute the decision to make the new website the official one. And let's continue giving feedback, issues, and pull requests from the community. Best, Ion

And reminder that we can always change things again if there is a suitable resolution in the future.
And let's continue giving feedback, issues, and pull requests from the community.
Well... yeah. There is still much to be done :) Bugs, then features. Thanks

Since the Foundation is generously offering a measure of self-determination to developers with respect to the ownership of Boost's shared assets, this can probably wait. Thanks

This document is unsigned. Has it been executed? Robert Ramey

I object.
Grounds?

The pull request is obsolete now, so this is a moot point. I have commented on the issue to reflect this.
Why is the pull request obsolete? I'm really confused. I mean, we can't first debate whether we should have a new website, have a discussion in the ML about it, do a revision in the ML, fill bugs, review if they were solved, officially announce that the new website will go live when ready... and now just say this is obsolete. This is just unproductive. Whatever the outcome of the "available options" posted by Kristen, IMHO the new website should go live because that's what the community decided. That's independent of who owns/manages the domain. If the direct way is through this pull request, let's do it, we can do the DNS adjustments later when the owner issue is decided. Best, Ion

Because the technical mechanism to accomplish this is imperfect. Some external links would break and there would be at least some confusion over which domain is which. I much prefer the clean solution where boost.org remains the official home of the Boost project. I believe the Foundation when they say that they will honor the wishes of the community, so I am happy to wait a few more weeks to do things the right way. Although it would be nice to get this business all wrapped up before September 15 (CppCon) so that my shirts and brochures use the correct domain. That is correct, and since Foundation has the owner's credentials for the domain name, they could create an extra revocable credential that Sam Darwin may use to effect the launch of the new website at boost.org, with no loss of control. This can happen immediately if you want.to request this from the Foundation. However, there is one small problem which may complicate things. The few individuals who have sole administrative control of the boost.org domain may be unresponsive. I might have more details on Monday. Thanks
