I think it's a lost cause. Linus is too much C brain damaged and the fact that C suits system programming well blinds him for all the other areas. I love linus, but when he's such a zealot all it does is makes me sigh. You can't argue with a wall. My 0.02$

Personally, I suggest that you do not get involved in such a rivalry. No person that participates in such language wars will ever change his or her mind due to those discussions. As a Boost Moderator, I ask that this thread be discontinued immediately on the Boost list. It serves no purpose other than to distract us from more important matters. - Doug

Ok, I agree. Sorry about my mail then, It was not my intention to distract us. Best regards Matias

http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.git/57643/focus=57918 I don't see there is anything useful we can contribute. Linus is obviously deeply opposed to C++. I didn't find any of his arguments persuasive but I don't think there is anything we can do to change his mind, and taking part in the discussion is just throwing petrol on the fire. (By the way, remember that a design aim for C++ was to leave no room for a language - such as C - between C++ and assembler.) -- Martin Bonner Senior Software Engineer/Team Leader PI SHURLOK LTD Telephone: +44 1223 441434 / 203894 (direct) Fax: +44 1223 203999 Email: martin.bonner@pi-shurlok.com www.pi-shurlok.com disclaimer

Sorry folks. I had hit reply before seeing Doug's request to kill the thread. ----Original Message---- From: boost-bounces@lists.boost.org [mailto:boost-bounces@lists.boost.org] On Behalf Of Martin Bonner Sent: 19 September 2007 15:03 To: boost@lists.boost.org Subject: Re: [boost] C vs C++, by Linus [Complete snip] -- Martin Bonner Senior Software Engineer/Team Leader PI SHURLOK LTD Telephone: +44 1223 441434 / 203894 (direct) Fax: +44 1223 203999 Email: martin.bonner@pi-shurlok.com www.pi-shurlok.com disclaimer

I agree that it's unhelpful. Unfortunately, where there is such obvious partisanship and false reasoning in evidence, I don't think there's much hope of improving things. The best we can do is hope to contain such sentiments, and IMO the best way to do that is to keep improving the usability and stability of both C++ and Boost, and to work at educating people about how to use them well. -- Dave Abrahams Boost Consulting http://www.boost-consulting.com The Astoria Seminar ==> http://www.astoriaseminar.com

Hi Dave, You are completely right. Just as a last point, good programming is language independent in the same way that a good writer can produce fine art in any human language. What could be different, is how a particular programming language is more or less appropiated than other(s) for a given task. My experience favors C++ (including stl and of course, Boost) in all my writing.
