They seem to support a freetype backend, which is what I used in the past, too. It supports both, anti-aliasing as well as hinting. As said before, high quality requires hinting to be used, which makes the glyphs' size (sub-pixel) position-dependent. This means that text composites need to have some special logic to absorb the differences, if ever we want for them to be device-independent. Regards, Stefan
