[css] Wiki-style front page

Hi All, I have made a few modifications to my Wiki-inspired front page design. It is available here: http://uk.geocities.com/msclrhd/boost/boost2.html Differences include: * background colour fix; * heading alignment and padding fixes; * positioning fix for the main content. The page also contains the Google search along the top of the screen with www.boost.org (now Boost) and lists.boost.org (now Mailing Lists) as a drop-down list instead of radio buttons. In addition to this, it uses several different styles: Simple -- Basic styling, minimal colour, simple menu. Wiki v1 -- "Traditional" Wiki style Wiki v2 -- Alternate menu/link hover scheme Wiki v3 -- Alternate menu/link hover scheme Wiki v4 -- Alternate menu/link hover scheme At the moment it doesn't render correctly in IE because I have different named styles and IE is broken in this respect. Firefox works and allows you to switch between the styles. I am not sure about other browsers. However, I will focus on compatibility once a style has been chosen. Which elements work in each style? Which don't? Regards, Reece

I really like the search positioning and style! However, what might be even nicer is not only being able to fetch results from the other places where Boost is widely archived, but also being able to search the docs. Unfortunately, I'm not volunteering to write that functionality at this time. ;) Dave

Simple -- Basic styling, minimal colour, simple menu.
I think this is just too plain.
Wiki v1 -- "Traditional" Wiki style
The default. I like it, though it doesn't jump off the page. The boxes around each sub-menu help to set them off from each other nicely.
Wiki v2 -- Alternate menu/link hover scheme
Sets off the menu a little more subtly, but the purple hover color doesn't seem in keeping with the rest of the color scheme.
Wiki v3 -- Alternate menu/link hover scheme
Ow! My eyes! I don't like that blue for the menus at all.
Wiki v4 -- Alternate menu/link hover scheme
This one makes the menus seem more "active". I think this is my favorte of the bunch. -- Caleb Epstein caleb dot epstein at gmail dot com

How about Wiki v1 and links with :hover {text-decoration: underline;}? - Michael On Wed, 24 Nov 2004 08:38:51 -0500, Caleb Epstein <caleb.epstein@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi All,
I have made a few modifications to my Wiki-inspired front page design. It is available here:
Even after closing the annoying Yahoo ad, I don't like it as much as Rene's latest effort (but then, he's had more criticism to work with than you have ;->). The left column in particular looks odd (see enclosed). The white column where the bullets are and the double line at the bottom of each box is most of it, but I find the boxes around each button a bit harsh and unneccessary. You already have bullets; you don't lines separating things. -- Dave Abrahams Boost Consulting http://www.boost-consulting.com

I can't do anything about the Yahoo ads, I'm afraid :(.

What browser are you using? IE messes up the layout by importing all the CSS styles on the page, resulting in the messy style. I have now put the stylesheets into different pages and put links to them in the menu pane. They are accessible from: http://uk.geocities.com/msclrhd/boost/ where Multiple CSS -- this is the version I had last (works best in Firefox); Simple -- a basic style Wiki v1 -- a Wiki emulator Wiki v2-v3 -- variations on the Wiki style (mainly the menu and link styles) The Simple/Wiki pages work in IE as well as Mozilla. I haven't tested other browsers, but they should render it similarly. Regards, Reece

I'd be +1 if it weren't for the loud purple highlights. +0
Wiki v3 -- Alternate menu/link hover scheme
-1. Too much blue.
Wiki v4 -- Alternate menu/link hover scheme
-1 for most of the reasons posted earlier when I was looking with IE. -- Dave Abrahams Boost Consulting http://www.boost-consulting.com

Hi All, I have made further modifications, using the Wiki v2 template as the basis for these revisions. It has now deviated from the Wiki look and has a few graphics, including one of the logos by Jonathan. It is available here: http://uk.geocities.com/msclrhd/boost/ Jonathan: could I request a smaller sized logo? Preferrably one that is around 80 pixels wide. Thanks. (This is so that it fits with the menu, allowing the contents to be moved up.) Regards, Reece

The "Welcome to Boost.org!" text is juxtaposed with the search bar in NS7.1 on Solaris and is slightly obscured in NS7.2 on WinXP. The search bar overlays the top line of the box around the main text; I suspect it is supposed to be higher. The page is too busy for me. All of the lines are a distraction rather than a help.
In addition to this, it uses several different styles:
Simple -- Basic styling, minimal colour, simple menu.
The logo overwhelms the page. It needs to be smaller or a different logo is needed. The left column is more attactive, but I dislike all of the underlines. The link blue is too faint. There is insufficient contrast relative to the background. I think the icons to the left of all headers should be the same, if different sizes. The hover style is a bit too strong.
Wiki v1 -- "Traditional" Wiki style
The "Welcome..." text is mostly obscured by the search bar in NS7.1 on Solaris. It is the same as MultipleCSS in NS7.2 on WinXP. The boxes and lines are too distracting. I like the hover style.
Wiki v2 -- Alternate menu/link hover scheme
The "Welcome..." text is mostly obscured by the search bar. The left column appears the same as in Simple. The left column should be only as wide as needed for the listed links and headings. The logo should not govern the width of the left column. The hover style is a bit too strong.
Wiki v3 -- Alternate menu/link hover scheme
Ditton on the "Welcome..." text. The left column is way too busy. One's eyes are drawn there first. The hover style is a bit too strong.
Wiki v4 -- Alternate menu/link hover scheme
Ditton on the "Welcome..." text. The left column is still too busy, but it isn't as dominating as with Wiki v3. The hover style is a bit too strong. -- Rob Stewart stewart@sig.com Software Engineer http://www.sig.com Susquehanna International Group, LLP using std::disclaimer;
