so why not compute indeces for 2d case and use nrc for N>2? i think it's trivial to implement
Because the loss is so marginal in large computation that I prefer havign an homogeneous allcoation/acces schema. however there can be benefits (space and time) for small 2d matrices (wich i consider will be a widespread case)
