Well maybe, but how will developers ever know about these patches unless you tell them about them (presumably via an issue tracker)?
Well, yes I'm not saying that people will flock to my fork. That same process would still continue. But if you work with multiple sites, you end up having local patches for each.
Come to that, can't you do this right now with git-svn?
