With a convert namespace we need to name your functions using prepositions. This limit a lot the choice of names. I will comment to your 9 interface later.
I don't think everything must end with a preposition to use "to" or "as." So far, though, your suggestion is to use "convert_to" and "try_convert_to," which means you think "to" is a good choice.
