I would recommend using a make target (warning untested): make CMakeCache.txt : CMakeLists.txt : @echo ; always CMakeCache.txt ; actions echo { cmake -S "$(>:D)" -B $(<:D) cmake --build "$(<:D)" } Note 1: The directory will be created automatically.
