I always put the build outside the whole tree. I thought everyone did and I thought that's was the normal/recommended/customary practice when using CMake.
I do as well, which is why I included that in the examples. But the build subdir seems to be popular as well, judging from the other thread and Google. The official CMake docs state no preference.
