IMO we're getting further and further away from the ideal. Daniel's variation on your original is still the best one I've seen.
Sorry didn't intend that as a reply to the dark vs. light menu. Just as a question to Jeff as o which version he was saying did not have enough contrast... I'll deal with flipping the bkg/text contract on the menu soon.
