Ben, Phil: I'm reviving this thread, because tomorrow is the deadline for the next C++ Std meeting (Sophia-Antipolis). I decided I would make that deadline. The proposal hasn't changed much, hopefully, it's cleaner / bug-free, and I have left the count versions in the proposal, but they can be voted on separately. I've put in the illustration/examples b/c I think without it there will be too many questions. I think the next/prev mapping is useful no matter what, perhaps in a different section of Ch 25, <algorithm> (it doesn't have much in that formulation to do with sorting). I'll let the committee decide.
