So pick an expected minimum distro set (likely, what people are most likely to be running a year from now, or other timeframe that seems reasonable) and try to avoid requiring CMake higher than whatever is the minimum common version of that set.
In numeric terms, this translates to 3.10 (bionic), I believe, whose EOL is 2023. I think we can safely discount 2.8 distros and Stretch (EOL, LTS expires in Jan 2022.)
