Yes, they can. Check out BOOST_DECLARE_LOG_DEBUG and BOOST_DECLARE_LOG_COMPILE_TIME macros. For instance, // instead of BOST_DECLARE(dbg) BOOST_DECLARE_LOG_DEBUG(dbg) will make 'dbg' log available only in debug mode.
