In the particular case of the serialization library. There are actually two libraries: libboost_serialization and libboost_wserialization . If one's platforms doesn't offer enough wide character support, then an attempt to build libboost_wserialization will fail. If libboost_serialization does in fact build, then you can use that - just don't use wide characters. When building on a new platform - be sure and run all the tests.
