The particular problems I perceive are threading (dunno if it's present in gmail) and the browser-latency (I would get insane if it took me more than a second to switch to a different message).
I regularly parse all of the boost mailing lists via the gmail web interface. For me, it handles threading adequately, and there is no perceived latency (most days) when opening mail. I much prefer the mailing list format. Jon
