Since I'm not very knowledgeable about Linux or other POSIX-like systems, I tend to make really stupid mistakes. Anyone should raise a red flag if they spot something that doesn't seem right.

You misread Michael Cox. He was recommending change from '/usr/bin' to '/usr/local/bin'.
