Yes, but insisting that people consider 2D points a subset of 3D points (rather than a different concept which is isomorphic with a subset of 3D points), is probably a mistake.
Hummm... I think its quite the opposite ! Generalizing, making use of similarities is what programming is all about. If 2D points are part of 3D points, then our design should reflect that. -- Anis Benyelloul
