A while back, John Maddock pointed out that we have serious problems with read_write_mutex:

Have we addressed these problems to everyone's satisfaction? If so, great; if not, we need to remove read_write_mutex from the RC_1_33_0 branch immediately.

I don't believe anything has changed, so I guess we need to yank it out. John.
