One might expect 'g' for VC8 to indicate _HAS_ITERATOR_DEBUGGING: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa985982(VS.80).aspx which is a separate diagnostic mode of the STL, much heavier than _SECURE_SCL: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa985965(VS.80).aspx
