The point is I want to contribute to buildsystems themselves, as projects. Yet it's obvious to me that cmake as a whole is a mistake, so I can't contribute to it in good faith. The abundance of people considering it an upgrade compared to autotools and not another makefile hack suggests that there's little place for me in FOSS community.
It would be a loss to not have the labour of someone so passionate about the topic. It may just be that CMake is chosen for C++ projects you follow in the future. If so, you might still find room for interesting things in the build system world. For example, there is currently a shake vs ninja benchmark battle [1] going on where someone like you could contribute.
