patrick, thanx for the suggestion. i am actually a fan of ace myself and i have happily used it before the problem is: nowadays it is becoming more and more common for non-cs depts. to try and write reusable, near-commercial quality code. this is true at least for some major private universities that i know of. that typically happens because companies who supply research funds expect to see software that is immediately useful, not just proof of concept coding. in other words, we are supposed to deliver quality scientific c++ libraries and software that implements all the research that's going on in the dept. given that, sticking with a single 3rd party library for such fundamental tools makes sense for several reasons: (1) when a new student arrives, you tell him/her to go to boost.org and start reading and that's the only burden. you don't also say, "oh, also read about ace, etc.". these people do not need to be very fluent in c++ ( remember, we are talking about non-cs engineering students ) so it's only confusing to force them to use different interface styles. boost interfaces sometimes vary to but at least the overall 'feel' of them is unified and in sync with the standard library (2) when a company wants to use the code, they only need to download and compile boost and our code and nothing else. the less 3rd party dependency, the better (3) and, finally, it is much easier to justify the use of boost than any other library out there. i can simply say "some of their sub-libraries are gonna make it to the next standard" and "they have c++ standards committee members on board" and will persuade even the biggest anti-open-source zealot for the above reasons, we prefer to use a boost sub-library whenever we can rather than using some other 3rd party library regardless of how high quality it might be. [regression] run_tests.sh: support for paths with spaces

Howdy, I have attached to this message a patch to run_tests.sh to support running the script when some of the paths have spaces in them. It turns out when running this script under cygwin, some of the Windows paths involved have spaces in them, resulting in errors. The fix involves placing in double quotes any variable referring to a path. If this patch seems okay, I would like to commit the changes, unless someone else would like the honors. [filesystem] size() on directory?

How should size( "foo" ) behave if "foo" is a directory? 1) Throw. The function should be renamed file_size(). 2) Return 0. Directories don't strictly speaking have a size. 3) Return the number of entries in the directory. Directories are really just containers; so of course they have a size. (1) and (3) seem most attractive to me; (2) seems useless for directories, and probably misleading. The problem with (3) is that for many (most?) operating systems the implementation would have to iterate over the directory to get a count, and this difference in complexity compared to getting the size of a file (which is usually constant complexity) could be pretty surprising. I'm inclined to go with (1), naming the function "file_size", and then add a function later to get the number of entries in a directory. But only if there is enough demand. I don't want to clutter up the library with a lot of seldom used functions that can be trivially written as user code. Thoughts? --Beman

I hope it's just my ISP caching web pages.... I've been working on something for the past few days, so I wasn't looking at our e-mails. However, I did look at <http://www.boost.org> a few times to see if the latest version cam out yet. I didn't see anything there. When I looked at our e-mails, I saw an announcement for Boost 1.31.0. Do you know what that means? Our home page has NOT been updated! Can we fix this? (I noticed that the library documentation page <http://www.boost.org/libs/libraries.htm> _did_ get updated, but the library download page <http://www.boost.org/more/download.html> is now _gone_. Hi, I have a graph in the form of an adjacency_list with an internal property. I'm using vecS for both vertices and edges (and I don't want to use listS). When I remove a vertex with remove_vertex(), it seems that my property map is invalidated. Can I remove the property (from the map) which corresponds to the deleted vertex ? Is there any solution ?
