Is there any interest in a small observable_value library?

I have an idea of a small class which bundles a value and a way of listening to changes in it. I find this concept very useful when developing event-driven applications and wonder if there is any interest in a small library. My idea of how this could be implemented builds on top of boost::slots and signals. [soc] Boost.extension/reflection project advances

Hi Community...! As some of you may know, I'm working on a SoC project called "Boost.extensions and reflection". Boost.extensions is a library that we want to submit for revision to Boost. It was started by Jeremy Pack and now I'm working (along with Jeremy and my mentor Hartmut Kaiser) on several improvements to prepare it for revision. Having this finished, I'll focus on implementing some Reflection functionalities (on top of Extensions) into a new library. I'm writing this email because we think that it's very important for this program to keep you posted, as in that way we could benefit from your feedback and the community could benefit knowing about what we're doing. I'll send a mail like this periodically (probably once a week or two) to let you know the advances. Let's start with our work since the start of the program (a week ago): - After the initial phase of reviewing the actual source code I started to write some new unit tests. Basically, this new unit tests check the functionality of some of the examples (hello_world and multiple_inheritance for now). - I've been analyzing the Info class functionality and I've written two new examples, one very basic, like the "hello world" of the info class (and it's related to the original extensions hello world indeed) and other more complete. Just to let you know, Info class is a class that you could attach to the implementations where you can store the information that you need. This is very powerful as you can, for example, make it a pointer to some base class and then store different kinds of information in derived classes (this is shown in the complete example). For the next week we are planning: - Document the Info class and the new examples. - Test some border cases. - Fix some problems with LD_LIBRARY_PATH in certain platforms. - Make some benchmarks about the overhead of some parts of the library. - Fix some bugs with the registry class. Hello, Reading the Boost.MultiIndex docs I found that support for user-defined index types is planned. Quite occasionally recently I had the need of such functionality and finally developed my own container class for that. Are there any more concrete plans on this improvement of Boost.MultiIndex (a release version or a date)? Any interest in "flags" (type safety for enumeration bitsets)

Hi all, I wondered if anyone was interested is this idea - it's something I make a lot of use of, so figured it may be useful to others. I'm far from being expert on boost, the STL, or even C++ so it could easily be that this idea is encapsulated elsewhere and I've simply missed it - apologies if this is the case. Also I'm new to the whole contributing to boost thing, so I hope I've not done anything wrong in that respect. Description A class not dissimilar in operation to std::bitset, but specifically for enumeration flags/bitsets (i.e. combinations of enumerations - of a single enum type - or'd together). That is, a simple wrapper class around enumeration based flags - expected to be completely compiled out by any reasonable C++ compiler. Type safety for enumeration bitsets if you like. Motivation The goal is simple, push potential errors from run time, back to compile time. Additionally it should provide better self documenting code, and assist library users in understanding the arguments required and accepted by a function using the code. Take an example from the STL: void fstream::open(const char *_Filename, ios_base::openmode _Mode); which essentially translates to: void fstream::open(const char *_Filename, int _Mode); Meaning that the following code will compile: std::fstream strm; strm.open("file.txt", 666); Although the results will be anybody's guess - and more importantly may change if the library is changed, producing potentially horrid bugs (not something I would relish tracking down). The above example may be somewhat convoluted, but many times I've seen code where flags have been required as an argument, supposed to be from a specific enumeration only for users to use an enumeration of a different kind, or where a flag is required, but a user passes '0' which is not always a valid option. The new class would mean changing the above to: void fstream::open(const char *_Filename, boost::flags<openmode_enum> _Mode); which would result in an error for the given example (since "666" is not a valid openmode_enum enumeration). Any combination of or'd openmode_enums would, however, compile properly (and would behave as if the flags class did not exist). Obviously this is not a full proof solution - it's as easy to circumvent as enumerations themselves, importantly however someone circumventing it has to try - it'd be much more difficult to accidentally break. Anyways - I hope I've gotten the idea across (and that you all like it :o) Cheers for reading - all comments appreciated! Iain

Hi, I put up two minimal of patches for the pool library. I couldn't figure out how to build the tests (if at all possible for this lib without making my own build setup.). I've at least tested the mem-leak patch (http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/284) with our app and vc 7.1 and it works there. :) Cheers, /Marcus

[filesystem] Handling of long names on windows.

Hello, I'd like to know if the new release of the filesystem library can handle long file names (>MAX_PATH) on windows ? Those long file names require a wide char API, and that point seems ok in 1.34, but they also require parsing in native format path such as: \\?\D:\<path> \\?\UNC\<server>\<share> I could not find in the reference any file name that loocked that way. [filesystem] Checking if a file exists within a sepcific directory tree

Suppose the following directory: C:\export As a command line argument in one of my applications, I get an absolute path to a file. I want to check if this file exists at some nested level inside of C:\export. Suppose the file passed in is: C:\export\blah\myfile.txt I would like to be able to call some sort of function that returns 'true' if the file (myfile.txt) exists within the directory tree rooted at C:\export. Now suppose this next file: C:\work\anotherfile.txt The function in question would return 'false' here since anotherfile.txt does not exist inside of c:\export. Something like the following would work for me. is_file_within_directory_tree( "C:\export", "C:\work\anotherfile.txt" ); // returns false is_file_within_directory_tree( "C:\export", "C:\export\blah\myfile.txt" ); // returns true Is there an easy way to do this with Boost.Filesystem? Boost Development Environment proposal

There is a fresh draft of a Boost Development Environment proposal up at http://mysite.verizon.net/beman/development_environment.html This is a continuation of the "Proposal for radically altered approach to releases" discussion of a year ago. The topic has broadened as it has become obvious that release management is best dealt with in relation to our overall development environment, rather than something that happens in isolation. The proposal reflects a discussion at BoostCon with Troy Straszheim, Dave Abrahams, Eric Niebler, and Doug Gregor, and also insights from Thomas Witt regarding difficulties with release stability. The plan is to implement this proposal as we move to Subversion, so that things like directory permissions can be set up accordingly. Comments welcome! --Beman

A while ago there was talk of a sorting library on this list. I just ran across: http://sourceforge.net/projects/burstsort/ Anyone know if this is truly a novel algorithm? This implementation is GPL'ed which makes it pretty useless to me. If it really is good perhaps someone could provide a Boost implementation. Thanks, Michael Marcin

I feel free to use C++ (including boost.multindex) in the implementation of the DLL, but the interface is straight C. Part of that interface may give out an opaque pointer to an object owned by a boost.multiindex. /* C interface */ typedef struct FooTag Foo; Foo *makeFoo(int x, int y, int z); void killFoo(Foo *); void flushFoo(Foo *); void flushAllFoos(); Latter they call in with that opaque poitner as a parameter. I could look up the node in the container, but iterator_to would be better. I don't consider this "legacy" because I'm writing a new library to support new development, but I am contrained by the interface language ("C" vs "C++"). Paul

(I did say "admittedly for a fairly weak reason" :-) Usually it is a case of my passing around a pointer that can optionally be NULL, and then discovering during maintenance that I need to have an iterator. In all such cases I've been able refactor the routines to take an iterator, and ultimately been happy with that as the superior solution. However, the "lazy programmer" in me may have chosen iterator_to had it been available. Hmm. Sounds like I just described a good reason *not* to add it. Paul

Module libs/system/src/error_code.cpp has conditionalization which ensures that strerror_r() is called only on the platforms where this function is availble. The condition does not take into account Tru64 and VMS and, as a result, the module does not compile on these platforms. Attached patch fixes this problem. Ok to commit to HEAD? Thanks, Boris

I hope I'm posting it to the correct newsgroup. I wanted to mail this directly to the developer of boost::intrusive (Ion Gazta?aga), but I can't find his e-mail anywhere, or any way to directly report the bug. I am not a boost developer myself. Position of a contained element modulo m (new_buckets_len) is known to remain equal to its previous position modulo n (old_buckets_len) ONLY IF m < n AND n %m == 0, but the latter condition isn't being checked. The code assumes it can skip rehashing of m first buckets if m < n: //If we are shrinking the bucket array, just rehash the last nodes if(same_buffer && (old_buckets_len > new_buckets_len)){ n = new_buckets_len; } //Iterate through nodes for(; n < old_buckets_len; ++n){ ... } Also, the following comment: //If this is a buffer expansion don't move if it's not necessary if(same_buffer && new_n == n){ ++before_i; ... Needs to be changed simply to "don't move if it's not necessary" - it needs to be checked/may happen when shrinking the hash table also. Here's a suggested bugfix: - check if (old_bucket_len > new_buckets_len && 0 == old_bucket_len % new_buckets_len). - if true, i'th bucket needs to store the contents of all previous buckets at positions i + j*new_buckets_len for j in [0, old_buckets_len / new_buckets_len) spliced one after another. There is no need to check on a per-element basis. I believe this optimization should be done even when the rehash isn't in-place. A special case where this optimization is useful is when using power-of-2 num_buckets. - if false, buckets have to be re-scanned, using the existing code in the body of the existing loop, but starting from n = 0 always: for(; n < old_buckets_len; ++n){ ... } Please correct me if I'm wrong on this.. but just to be sure, I made a test program that verified rehash() can break the container's invariants when shrinking the container in place, which was indeed found to be the case. As a totally unrelated note, I don't understand why iunordered_set doesn't support a default constructor (so that buckets = 0 and num_buckets = 0, given the existence of a rehash() function. I see it like the reset() function in a scoped_ptr. If a "reset" style function is supported, the class shouldn't force you to initialize it at construction time. Then again, it's a matter of taste in design more than anything...

[fusion] transitive const / mutable views?

Dear all, while I appreciate boost::fusion very much, I've recently stumbled across a point that I don't understand. It appears to me that - const is transitive, i.e. dereferencing an iterator into a const vector yields a reference to a const element and - transformation algorithms work on const sequences. Combined, these two imply that an in-place modification of a sequence through a view generated by a transformation algorithm is impossible. While this is perfectly reasonable for transform, it seems quite restrictive for filter or erase. After all, filter_view accepts a non-const input sequence.
