Hi, I've finally been able to produce alpha release of completely reworked BoostBook based documentation for Boost.Test library. It's still not ready for release and I expect significant changes in both L&F (once I apply latest IBD based style) and content (some articles still missing). But it's in a shape close to what I would like it to be. I would really appreciate any comments to both content (language including) and style. I realize it might not be small undertaking so if you have time for just part of it, please post comments as well. Gennadiy, Initial comments (IMO) so far: It might be worthwhile including a section at the beginning to list the standard acronyms and provide a definition for any common terms you use throughout the documentation. There are several instances so far where you use an acronym without specifying what it is. proxies and const

General design question here. This came up on the user's list, and it made me question something I believed to be true. When writing a proxy for, e.g., a std container, I see two options for handling const. 0) Const-ness depends on the const-ness of the object being proxied: struct vector_proxy { std::vector<int> & vec; typedef std::vector<int>::iterator iterator; typedef std::vector<int>::iterator const_iterator; iterator begin() const { return vec.begin(); } ... }; 1) Const-ness depends on the proxy object itself: struct vector_proxy { std::vector<int> & vec; typedef std::vector<int>::iterator iterator; typedef std::vector<int>::const_iterator const_iterator; iterator begin() { return vec.begin(); } const_iterator begin() const { return vec.begin(); } ... }; I think a loooong time ago, I preferred (1) but these days (0) is more natural for me, but I can't say why, exactly. Just feels like that's how it should be. Thoughts? [GSoC] Boost.Reflection

Hi List! As you may know, I'm working in GSoC on a project called Boost.Extension/Reflection. The Extensions part of the project is finished (just a few details are missing, its original author is working on that), and I've started to work in Boost.Reflection a month ago. This is a library that brings "Reflection" features to C++. The features that are completed now is that you can reflect a class, setting a name for it and you can add different methods, each one identified with an ID of some type (could be different for each method). Also you should define parameter names and types. Finally, you could use the reflection to call any method (identified with that ID). This mail is just to let you know that, besides it isn't complete, we have committed to the sandbox a working version. It has minimum documentation and some examples. Koenig lookup swap.

Would anyone be interested in me adding an koenig lookup swap function to boost? (I would say it belongs in boost.utility). It would be a swap function that uses Koenig lookup to find the 'best' swap funciton, falling back on std::swap like this: template <class T> void koenig_swap(T& left, T& right) { using std::swap; swap(left,right); } Several boost libraries (multi array, compressed pair, graph, optional, spirit) already use this technique, each time explicitly with 'using std::swap' instead of abstracting it out.

questions regarding SVN setup

I'm interested in a) getting developer access to the SVN system - if I don't already have it. b) I don't know if the SVN system has a web browser interface like the CVS system did. If it does it would be nice to have it enabled. Personally, since i have tortoise svn on my machine, its not a big deal if I don't have it. But I think its very useful for those who arn't hooked up to SVN system to be able to observe history and when investigating features. c) It seems to me that information regarding SVN access and boost customs and practices for using it to best advantage should be available form the main boost web page. Oh now I found it - its via a link titled Sandbox SVN. So I guess what I'm ask is for the main page to be tweaked so it's location is more obvious. d) The same goes for Trac. There is a link referring to it as a list of bug fixes. But it seems that its also intended to be used for reporting bugs. I don't think that's at all clear from the main page. e) Poking around with the browser shows me a branch for RC_1_34_0. It seems we're releasing 1.34.1 - where is the branch for the actual code released? or are they the same? or? f) Poking around a little more, I see: root/branches/SPIRIT_1_6/boost/boost ... // all the boost headers which is what I expect to see. I presume that all these headers are the state at the time the branch was made plus any merged in updates. OK then I look at: root/branches/SPIRIT_1_6/boost/libs ...// only find the directory for spirit which kind of surprises me. I expect to see the whole set of libraries even though I know they havn't changed on this branch. I'm sure all the boost libraries haven't changed on this branch yet they are all there. What am I missing here? On the web page http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/wiki/BoostSubversion under Developer Access one finds: " Boost contributors are given read/write access to the Boost Subversion repository when their Boost tasks warrant. [gsoc] the signal network library is now the dataflow library

The summer of code signal network project has taken a turn for the generic, and is now called the Dataflow library (you can think of dataflow programming as "programming by specifying the flow of data through data processing components"). Basically, after originally focusing on using Boost.Signals as the data transport mechanism, I started exploring another data transport mechanism (using simple pointers, and processing the data using Phoenix expressions), which helped me extract some generic dataflow concepts. I have posted the documentation at: http://dancinghacker.com/code/dataflow/ A few notes about the docs, so you know what you're looking at: * The Dataflow.Signals docs are still in transition - if something is confusing, your best bet is to look at the examples. If the examples are confusing... let me know :-) * the doxygen generated reference is broken * I'm still thinking of how to best express the concepts. Even though the documentation (and the code) are still in a "slight" state of flux, at this point I would rather put something out there to get feedback than wait to get everything ironed out. By reading the docs you should get a good idea of where the project has gone, and any comments you might have are very very very welcome. If you want to look at the code, it is in the sandbox (SOC/2007/signals), the tests and examples have been tested with GCC 4.0.1/darwin and MSVC (test_disconnect is known to fail). The summary of the project contributions thus far: 1) A minimal generic dataflow layer which is data-transport mechanism independent, which gives a glimpse of what a generic dataflow library can offer. This layer currently supports component connection, invocation, and grouping. 2) A relatively complete implementation supporting Boost.Signals as the data transport mechanism. This has a number of generally useful signal-based components for dataflow networks, and provides easy connectability. 3) An experimental implementation using mostly pointers as the data transport mechanism + support for Phoenix expressions to process the data. There are some interesting things brewing here - one of the more interesting (to me) is the notion of "inferred" connections (connections that are not stored in memory but inferred from the component). There are some examples of a fibonacci sequence generator that use this (see the docs under Dataflow.Phoenix), and in the future I would also like to experiment with encoding dataflow networks in Proto expression trees. For the GSoC phase I plan to iron out items 1 and 2. Your feedback would be most helpful in deciding what to focus on - what do you find useful? what do you find confusing, awkward, or incorrect? that, and any comments on the implementation are most welcome. However, I've been wondering whether it would be possible to make the "hook interface" easier to use and less demanding in terms of names that are injected into client code. Shared Map

Greetings, I've recently implemented a new collection type for a project of mine. It works identically to std::map, with the same algorithmic guarantees, but additionally can be 'copied' in constant time. That is: shared_map<int, int> a; for(i = 0; i < 100; i++) a[i] = i*i; // Each insert in log(n) of the map size shared_map<int, int> b = a; // This is constant time (not linear as in a std::map) b[1] = 7; // Still log(n) of course b[2] = 3; assert(a[2] == 4 && b[2] == 3 && a[6] == 36 && b[6] == 36); The trick is simple: the map is a red-black tree, but we get rid of the explicit parent pointer for each red-black node. This complicates the code, but is algorithmically uninteresting since we always descend from the root anyway and just need to track the parent as we go, either in an explicit stack or through recursion (my current implementation). The key point however is that the lack of an explicit parent allows us to use reference counting, and share children. Thus the copy from a to b simply copies the root node, and adds an additional reference count. All future changes do copy on write for shared nodes (any with a ref count of 2 or more). The does lower the overall performance for all operations somewhat, but for cases like mine where there is a need to copy large maps a lot, and each map remains quite similar to the other maps, there is a huge savings in computation and memory usage. Another nice use is: copy a map (since it's free) and iterate over it while modifying the original with no worries. One caveat, obviously multiple threads require a single global lock since even apparently different collections share internal state (or I could add a per node lock, which has the nice effect of general fine grained tree locking, but is tons of overhead, perhaps a compile time choice?). My current implementation is sufficient for my purposes, but with a little cleanup (making stronger iterator validity guarantees, better support for erasing ranges, explicit parent stack instead of recursion perhaps), it could be perhaps useful to everyone. Also, it's a little work but straightforward to generalize to shared_set, shared_multimap, etc. I was wondering if there would be any interest from people in such a library? If so, I would be willing to do the needed cleanup, if not, it suits me reasonably well as is (I don't even use erase). Also curious if anyone has seen such a thing anywhere before. It seems obvious enough to me, but perhaps it's actually new, I couldn't find anything like it when I went searching. Thanks for your time -Jeremy

Hi, I was browsing the CVS repo through the web UI. I find 2 files directly under the main CVS folder (http://boost.cvs.sourceforge.net/boost/) index.html and creation_tags.hpp which are boost::interprocess. IMHO, it must be some residual files having accidently gotten into the CVS due to a bulk checkin. A request: For some of us behind the firewall, can a nightly archive of HEAD be made available? [Iterator] Adaptors for accessing keys/values in associative containers

Would anyone be interested in having a couple of extra specialized iterator adaptors in Boost.Iterator? I'm thinking of 'key_iterator' and 'value_iterator' adaptors (along with convenience 'make_key_iterator' and 'make_value_iterator' functions) that allow any associative container (that follows standard library idioms) to be accessed as either a range of keys or as a range of values. They'd be used like this: std::map<std::string,int> m; std::for_each(make_value_iterator(m.begin()),make_value_iterator(m.end()),func); Where func() takes an int parameter rather than a std::pair<const std::string,int>. Using these adaptors is considerably easier than using boost.lambda for this purpose and they can be implemented to incur no (or negligable) runtime overhead when compared to iterating normally through an associative container. I find these useful - does anyone else?

[gil] trunk compile error

Hello, From svn trunk I get a compiler error in boost\gil\gil_concept.hpp for line #1350. Inside of IteratorAdaptorConcept I get "expression must have a constant value" for BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT(is_iterator_adaptor<Iterator>()); Thanks, Michael Marcin

Boost.Interprocess has a sorted vector family (although implements it's own vector to make the container shared memory friendly). Interprocess offers 4 containers: flat_map, flat_multimap, flat_set and flat_multiset. You can download Interprocess from the SVN repository. Compilation with Visual Studio 7.1 fails

While trying to compile a snapshot of the SVN repository with VS 7.1 ( on a Windows XP box ) i got server "buffer overrun" errors that resulted in about 20 targets not being compiled. MSDN says that disabling precompiled header support the problem should not manifest anymore. Is there anyone that has solved it? Thanks in advance, Luca

[svn] cleaning up old branches

The standard practice with subversion is to `svn delete` old branches once they have been merged. This keeps the branch directory nice and clean (and frees up the branch name for future use).
