Can some one point in me in the right direction: Environment: RHEL 3.2.3-47 Compiler: GCC 3.2.3 BOOST Library: xpressive Issue: Trying the example found in the xpressive.pdf on page 31and I keep getting the following message. boost/detail/flyweight_mutex.hpp implements a mutex class based on a Win32 CRITICAL_SECTION or using Pthreads according to the following pp logic: #if defined(WIN32) || defined(_WIN32) || defined(__WIN32__) // based on CRITICAL_SECTION #elif defined(BOOST_HAS_PTHREADS) // based on Pthreads The problem with this is that WIN32 and related macros are not predefined in some environments (Cygwin at least) but rather they are defined inside windows.h, thus making the logic above dependent on the inclusion context. Suggest: detail functions for full built-in arithmetic

Maybe we should add a header to our detail (and/or pending) folder encapsulating the full versions of built-in integer arithmetic operations, that most(?) processors have, but neither C nor C++ let us access. I'm talking about functions like: std::pair<unsigned, bool> full_add( unsigned a1, unsigned a2 ); The processor has a "carry" flag whenever an integer addition overflows, but we can't access it (without assembly-language hacks). A conforming C++ workaround is to calculate the carry flag in advance before adding. But we could provide an implementation of this function that uses the assembly-language hacks to compute the sum and carry at once, encapsulating it for any other library (present or future) that needs full addition arithmetic. Other examples would be: std::pair<unsigned, bool> full_subtract( unsigned m, unsigned s ); // for quick access to the "borrow" state boost::array<unsigned, 2> full_multiply(unsigned f1, unsigned f2); // no need to do piecemeal multiply with 16-bit halves // result[1]: high part, result[0]: low part std::pair<boost::array<unsigned, 2>, unsigned> full_divide( unsigned (&dividend)[2], unsigned divisor ); // no need to do piecemeal division one-bit at a time // result.first[1]: quotient, high part // result.first[0]: quotient, low part // result.second: remainder I list only "unsigned int" here, but we could do versions for all the built-in integer types. asio forcing the use of handlers?

I am just about to find out how I could make use of the asio library, and am wondering if async io also can be done without using handler functions. I recognize that it is possible to use it in a blocked manner as follows: assuming we have an open socket: sock read(sock, buf); ... use the buffer contents ... Now I am wondering if I could also accomplish something like: cp = async_read(sock, buf); ... do something useful ... cp.wait(); .. use the buffer contents ... Thank you, Roland aka speedsnail

Release procedure. Where do we go?

Hopefully I am not seen as trying to add fuel to the fire, but I am wondering if anyone tried to perform an analysis of what exactly did not work with the (previous) release procedure. I have seen David Abrahams trying to analyze the current tools, but I have not seen an analysis of the procedure and why it fails. (But I might have missed it in the long thread.) So I dare to ask the question again: What is wrong on 1) working on trunk, the bleeding edge 2) branching out for release when the trunk is release-stable 2.1) feature freeze and stabilizing, merging relevant parts to trunk 3) releasing from release candidate branch, i.e. tagging the branch 3.1) bugfixing on branch, merging to trunk, tagging the branch Is it this procedure that is broken, or is it the tools that are insufficient to support this procedure? In this scenario there is also always a release-ready branch insofar as a branch, once released still is release-ready (e.g. for fixing). And there is nothing that can potentially destabilize a branch that has already been forked out. There is also no requirement that a release branch ever dies. Bug fixes still can go there after it has been tagged. I also see nothing wrong with multiple release candidate branches at the same time. A release branch simply is another name for a certain set of features that are covered. No resources to test everything? Only a reported failure indicates something being wrong, that needs to be fixed. So I think it only fair to ask the reporter to help with testing by providing access to her environment and spend the necessary processor cycles to fix the problem. (Of course we would need the tools that would allow us this kind of on demand remote testing.) (This kind of support is also where developers could earn money if they like.) A potential user just browses through the testing pages and selects the most up to date release that covers the required features. (With the option for bug-fixing if something does not work for his environment.) Of course in this scenario the release manager would have less work to do :-D . Just watching out when a agreed feature set is in the trunk, and branch when there. (Of course developers always try to hold trunk as stable as possible ;-) ) Another potential benefit of this model is that developers already are used to it. So my bottom point is to generalize the current model to what I have said above and concentrate to get better tools that support this. AFAIK this is also the model other big monolithic projects are using. Departing from it would require modularization of the boost library, which at the current state does not look like an easy task to me. A small example: I was trying to single out the asio lib, and discovered that it had quite some implicit (undocumented) dependencies on other header-only/prebuilt libs. Only when I tried to use auto_link on an msvc platform with BOOST_LIB_DIAGNOSTIC turned on I eventually figured out that I also had to provide boost_system boost_date_time and boost_regex to the linker while compiling with gcc. So the recipe I once heard on this list: just take the relevant files and copy to your directory if you don't need all of boost, is hoping at best. Roland aka speedsnail

a question about message_queue

Dear All: My project use messge_queue to communicate between two processes. When I used the processes as normal process,it runs well. but It seems that the client process can't access the message queue if I set the server process as a windows services. can you help me about this? is this a problem about privilege? but message_queue do not have a option to set privileges. looking forward to your help!

Hello, I got an segmentation fault if I create mutliple threads and each thread class a free function f() which creates an ptree from a xml stream. Because each thread calls f() it should create its own ptree xml parser - but why does the seg fault happen? Hello, Boost.Serialization 1.33-1.34 introduces the notion or "helpers" to the Archive interface by means of the member functions: void lookup_helper( const extended_type_info* const eti, shared_ptr<void>& sph); void insert_helper( const extended_type_info* const eti, shared_ptr<void>& sph); which allow the user to make an archive instance store arbitrary helper objects associated to any given type. This helper interface is used to implement serialization of boost::shared_ptr in a non-intrusive way, which was impossible for former versions of Boost.Serialization. This is a wonderful addition to the library because not only solves the old problem with serializating shared_ptr but also serves as a general utility for implementing complicated serialization schemes, notably those in which internal resources are serialized which cannot be directly manipulated from the class public interface. I have used archive helpers to good effect in implementing an otherwise unfeasible serialization algorithm for a library I'm writing, but when I moved from Boost 1.34 to the SVN trunk I discovered to my dismay that this (admittedly undocumented) feature has been removed in favor of an ad-hoc extension of the Archive interface (internally based on something resembling the former helper code) to specifically allow serialization of boost::shared_ptr. IMHO this is a step back because it singles out shared_ptr as a type receiving special attention (vg. what will happen with std::tr1::shared_ptr, will the interface be augmented again to cope with this?) and primarily because it deprives us developers from a very very powerful tool. Just catching up after a week vacation... I had a quick conversation on IRC with Volodya where he mentioned a rather appealing idea which happened to coincide with a similar idea I was having. He mentioned the idea of a "release team" to hammer out the specifics of the new release procedures. Now what I was thinking of... For a while now I've been considering volunteering to manage a release. But I came to some obvious observations, and others pointed out similar thoughts: * Being a release manager is a lot of work because of the size and scope of Boost. * There's a lot of learning involved for each new manager. In the form of learning the process and tools to get the release completed. * It seems we are expecting the manager to both manage releases, and to advance the development of the release procedures. This is not new to this release cycle. AFAICT most release managers have "fine tuned" the release process as part of their work. * If we are going to expect another Boost release, with something more than just patches, in the near future we have to start a release cycle now. * As a body of volunteers, no one person has enough "free time" to devote to managing a release. Particularly if that same person is also dealing with development of a Boost component. For 1.35 the release manager is going to face not just fine tuning the process, but overhauling it. The repository changed, the process is changing, and the tools are changing. Additionally, from my POV, the discussions about the new release process don't seem to be progressing at a quick enough pace. This made me realize it would be unrealistic for me to devote the need time that being a release manager would require. So the simple idea is to have a "Release Team" instead of a "Release Manager" to distribute the work and hopefully smooth out the attention a release gets. The dynamic would be: * A release team is composed of three people. Yes, it's an arbitrary number, hence it only feels right because of the expected amount of work 1.35 is likely to be. For later releases two people might be enough. * The goal is for the team to have a good spread in understanding of the release process. And hence we should prefer picking, when possible, people with knowledge of the management, building, and testing aspects of the process. * The members of the team are free to decide how they split up the work. But we should encourage working on all aspects to advance the spread of the release process know-how. * A member signs on for two consecutive releases, in a staggered order. The obvious exception being the first few releases where one or more would only do one release. This reduces the ramping up time a single release manager would go through, hence keeping the releases going smoothly. Does this sounds like an idea worth pursuing, i.e. running with for this release? [atomic_count] Discrepancy between gcc and solaris implementation

Hi boosters, when performance tuning a really tight loop in a simple program, I found that reading the value of an atomic count is unexpectedly slow on a gcc platform. Hello all, Is there any visitor mechanism somewhere in boost that allows one to introspect the contained type of a boost::any? I've been using boost::variant frequently and I love the way its visitor works, but it's not always practical to know all possible types at compile time (library dependencies, compilation time etc..). I thought something similiar for boost::any, and I put together a small test: any_variant<T0, T1, T2> any_of_type_T0_T1_T2; It allows visitation of the types given as template parameters. It seems is not included in the files you can download from http://spirit.sourceforge.net/dl_more/fusion_v2/ In particular I'm looking for #include <boost/fusion/functional/invocation/invoke_procedure.hpp> BTW fusion 2 is not bundled with the boost_1_34_1.tar.bz2 you get from sourceforge, so to be able to have a complete fusion library an user is supposed to walk: boost.org --> download boost_1_34_1.tar.bz2 from sourceforge --> (surprise! fusion is not in) --> google ---> spirit.sourceforge.net/dl_more/fusion_v2/ ---> (surprise! functional module is not in) ---> google again ----> pain!! -> ask to mailing list ---> ??? Not exactly what you would call "user friendly".... Hi! I'm trying to think of a usable repository layout. The features it should provide IMHO: (1) release-ready branch, which is updated by the release manager/team and includes latest additions for the next release as well as bug fixes from the last release. this one is to prepare for a major release (2) release-fixing branch, which is updated by the release manager/team and only gets bug fixes. this one is to provide support/fixes for the last release (3) a main development branch for each library in boost. this would be updated by the library maintainer. this directory should hold changesets which the release manager/team merges into (1) (4) testing branches for each library which can hold various bugfixes and which are used for testing the changes before they are merged into the release-ready (1) and release-fixing branches (2). (5) possibly branches for each library which are "private" to the library and used by the maintainer as she likes To keep (3), (4), and (5) together, I think the following directory structre would do: /libraries /iostreams /trunk (3) /branches /testing_bug143 (4) /trying_refactor (5) /serialization /trunk (3) /branches /... /tags /... (also 5) /... /release /release-1-35-ready (1) /release-1-34-fixing (2) /tags /release-1-34 /release-1-34-1 /... Library work flow: Bring /library/foo/trunk in sync with last release. Fix bugs in this trunk. Report to release manager/team: "please include /libraries/foo/trunk -c 39042 into release, its a bug fix for ticket #374". Maybe branch off from trunk of foo or from latest release in order to develop new feature. Use this branch for heavy testing, too. When ready, report: "please include /libraries/foo/branches/new_feature -r 40000:42000 into release-ready, its a new feature requested in #845". Release work flow: When receiving a "bug fix report" merge it into working copy of the release-fixing branch and do local testing. maybe include some more requests. After that "commit" and create a tarball for external testing. Committing the only locally tested state will preserve this exact state in the subversion. I think this is needed to provide a tarball and an identical copy in repository. If tests are successful try the same bug fix in release-ready branch and do the same testing. Ok. I currently don't know how testing is done exactly, but other messages on the list indicated testing each bug fix as it is merged into the release branch. This seemed to require building a tarball and giving it away for testing. I think this is a process which takes days. So how long would it take to include a couple of fixes into the release-fixing branch? How much testing is done up to today? Frank

Hi Boost.Intrusive user, ------- 1 Info ------- As you might know, recently an interface change was discussed for Boost.Intrusive and more configurability was required. The discussion lead to the following templatized option specifiers: typedef list < member_hook<Hook> , constant_time_size<false> , size_type<unsigned short> , any_future_options<option_value> .... > MyList; I've implemented this approach and my first results were not very encouraging: list_test obj grew from 3.5MB to 11MB, compilation times skyrocketed, debug symbol files were really big... However, I started shortcutting internal symbols to reduce symbol length and I've reduced the bloat to 4.5MB obj and moderately increased compilation time. The executable has grown a bit (5-10% in release mode) but I still don't know why (maybe I still get some long symbols there but machine code has not grown). My conclusion is: Be careful with meta-programming. The current implementation, if the user does not specify any hook or value traits, the container automatically uses the corresponding base hook with the default tag, so defining a class to be insertable in different containers is pretty easy: using namespace boost::intrusive; class my_class : list_base_hook< link<auto_unlink> > , slist_base_hook< link<safe_unlink>, void_pointer<offset_ptr<void> > , set_base_hook<> {}; typedef list<my_class> MyList; typedef slist<my_class> MySlist; typedef set<my_class> MySet; I plan to upload a version with the new interface to get more comments. -------------------------- 2 Configuratility problem -------------------------- Now that compile_time configurability is more self-describing (which was one of the main goals of the change) we must also allow stateful option configurability. This means that constructors of containers must take objects of configured stateful policies. stateful policies can be: * Stateful ValueTraits * Comparison or Equality predicates * Hash functors * Any new stateful option we might imagine So a container might end with a long list of initializers: unordered_set ( bucket_info , const hash &h = hash() , const equal &e = equal() , const value_traits &v = value_traits() , const my_new_option &n() , ....) Obviously, if the user has to pass a stateful value_traits, he has to also specify all previous parameters. Interest in a small Enum IO utility?

Hi, I have some code that helps with defining iostream-operators for enums. We use this in our C++<->xml bindings. Basically, it's just two maps (string->enum & enum<-string) and some syntactic sugar. However, I happen to think it is quite neat and so figured it might be useful to other people too. (And it's always nice to give something back :) So, is this something that would fit in boost? Advantages: * Enables lexical_cast on enums. * Pure implementation detail from user-of-enum's perspective. * Very little syntax overhead, inspired by boost::assign. * Works across namespaces & DLLS. * Allows user to define io-ops for "external" enums too. (But the IO-op-macro hs to go into the external namespace.) * Uses pimpl-idiom for faster compilation. * Suitable for header-only version. Issues to work out: * Uses the Loki-singleton to store implementation details. * Initialization is a bit rough. (We get away with it because we have a static "initClass" method for every class. It is a natural place for enumio-setup in our app, but this does not translate to general code well.) * Stores std::strings, although it's almost always constructed from string literals. Wastes a bit of memory for simpler implementation. * EnumIO<E>::The() is globally accessible, so there could be conflicts. (Very low probability though) See below for example & implementation. Dear tree expert, As you might know, Boost.Intrusive implements an intrusive red-black tree and also a class offering red-black tree algorithms. Those algorithms were taken from the SGI STL code and optimized a bit. One of the goals of Boost.Intrusive is avoiding recursive calls to make those algorithms suitable for very big trees and/or embedded systems. The SGI STL uses two recursive algoritms: * Recursive destruction with no rebalancing * Recursive structural copy (which needs a erasing function in case a copy throws an exception). All STL implementations I'm aware of use recursive cloning and destruction. Boost.Intrusive changed the recursive tree destruction algorithm to a non-recursive one thanks to a step by step tree destruction function (unlink_leftmost_without_rebalance) that is also very useful to implement advanced tree cloning functions that might reuse old allocated nodes. However, I haven't found a non-recursive structural copy algorithm anywhere. So if you are a tree expert, I need your help to get a tree cloning function, that: * Does not use the comparison predicate or calls any function that uses it (e.g.: insert()) * Can destroy all constructed nodes in a non-recursive form if node-copying throws an exception. * It's pretty efficient ;-) Willing to help? Simple object factory: Checking signatures at runtime

I'm extending the 'simple object factory' I have presented to this mailing list few threads ago. It is coming out pretty nice: the number of allowed object c'tor arguments have been extended until a given maximum and instead of an (optional) custom "object creator" function it is now possible to use any callable entity as example a functor object. The factory is now "almost" satisfactory. It has only a couple of drawbacks, one small and a work around does exist. The other is "important" because is a design issue. Very briefly: I can register any c'tor anywhere in a program to teach the factory how to build an object: Factory::register_class<Base, double>("MyObject"); Factory::register_class<Base, int, Base*>("MyObject"); Above instructions automatically instantiate and register two c'tor invokers c1 and c2 defined as: Base* c1(double d) { return new Base(d); } Base* c2(int i, Base* b) { return new Base(i, b); } Constructor overloading support it means that the factory will call two different functions also if the same key "MyObject" is passed depending on the argument types: Base* o1 = Factory::object("MyObject", 3.14); /* function 'c1' is called */ Base* o2 = Factory::object("MyObject", 3, o1); /* function 'c2' is called */ The factory is also able to check the signatures at runtime and discards any wrong call: Base* o3 = Factory::object("MyObject", o1, 3); /* o3 == NULL */ Finally, here it is the current big limitation: automatic argument type conversion is not supported: Factory::object("MyObject", 3.14, o1); /* fails: double -> int is not done */ Derived* d = new Derived(); /* say Derived it's a sub class of Base */ Factory::object("MyObject", 3, d); /* fails: Derived* -> Base* is not done */ The design issue is that type info is templatized so that only "near perfect matches" are discovered. Where "near perfect matches" it means that if a value 'v' has type V and constructor argument accepts type A then we have a match only if: A == V || A == V& || A == const V || A == const V& My question is: there exsist a way to check "relaxed" signatures at run-time? Put in general terms: Given a set 'Set' of functor objects f1,f2,..fn with different signatures in their operator() is it possible to check if a given set of values v1,v2,...vk are compatible with one or more of them ? [Release Process] composing the release

Hi! In this message I'm grounding my questions on the release process which we discussed ealier: development in the trunk and a release manager who will merge the changes into a release branch. When the libraries develop over time and some new features become release-ready they should me merged into the release branch. Now what happenes/should happen when a library X and a library Y both depend on library BASE and X includes a new feature which depends on a new version of BASE but library Y is using the old version of BASE? What should become of the release? Would the new features of X be rejected for release? Would we require lib Y to test against the new BASE? Proposal: For important/widely used "base" libraries we would use the release-ready version of the previous release. Meaning: at the same time when doing a release the lib BASE has some release-ready state (which is not necessarily part of the release). This state shall be "fixed" for use by other libraries when preparing for the *next* release. The BASE lib would be "one release behind", but every other library would have a common base to work with. Is this sensible? Frank
