[GIL] image analysis algorithms

hi folks, what is planned for GIL in terms of image processing/analysis algorithms. (I haven't seen anything in svn) there might be night-long discussions about which algorithms are "standard" and should belong to GIL and which not. working more than three years with VIGRA I would miss most of its basic and sophisticated algorithms when migrating to boost::GIL. nobody wants to implement image labeling, seeded region growing or basic morphology again and again. I know that for most algorithms more or less efficient (sometimes even patented) versions exist and most image analysis experts will write their own. for a broader majority of people a basic repertoire of algorithms will ease the daily work-flow a lot. one idea could be to port some of VIGRAs algorithms to GIL?! cheers, michael

Hello, by now I have intrusive pass all regression tests locally. There is one modification left, which I'm not sure off, therefore I would like to ask for some advice before committing. Hi, I've taken the thread_specific_ptr for a quick bug fixing, the problem is that now I am not being able to build the application for IA64 anymore (x64/x86 versions are working smoothly for weeks). The (recent svn) docs for range talk about boost_range_{begin,end,size}. Should't that be just range_{begin,end,size}? Method 2: provide free-standing functions and specialize metafunctions This procedure assumes that you cannot (or do not wish to) change the types that should be made conformant to a Range concept. If this is not true, see method 1. The primary templates in this library are implemented such that certain functions are found via argument-dependent-lookup (ADL). Below is given an overview of which free-standing functions a class must specify to be useable as a certain Range concept. Let x be a variable (const or mutable) of the class in question. Function Related concept boost_range_begin(x) Single Pass Range boost_range_end(x) Single Pass Range boost_range_size(x) Forward Range boost_range_begin() and boost_range_end() must be overloaded for both const and mutable reference arguments.

PATCH: Various error and warning corrections (g++ 4.3.0 snapshot)

Hi, I tried to compile most of Boost's code from trunk by including all header files (except */detail/* ones as I noticed that these are internal ones) together with a int main() {} body :-) I still need to improve my script a little bit but nevertheless I found still many errors and a few warnings. I attached a patch which fixes the most obvious ones. Affected libraries: archive asio bimap circular_buffer date_time format fusion logic numeric and token_functions.hpp (don't know to which library it belongs). I used the following g++ snapshot g++ (Debian 20070916-1) 4.3.0 20070916 (experimental) [trunk revision 128522] with the flags -Wall -pedantic -Wno-uninitialized -Wcast-align -Wpointer-arith -Wextra I really wonder why broken code can be committed. I will try to automate my test even more so that a svn pre commit hook script can be used ... If there are questions about the compiler output without the patch I can send you the necessary information. PS: I hope this is the right list. [Probability] manuscript and release of v0.4

I have now released version 0.4 of the Probability library. As usual, it is available either from the Boost Vault (boost.probability-0.4.tar.gz) or from http://biology.nmsu.edu/software/probability/ The main difference from earlier versions is that a power function, pow(), is now available for both probability and likelihood types. In addition, several of the operators involving mixed domains or value types are handled correctly now, and the testing is even more thorough than before. More importantly, though, I have written a manuscript describing the motivation and conceptual framework for the library in greater detail than is given at the site above. I would welcome anyone who wishes to review the manuscript to do so. Please let me know and I will forward a copy. Finally, I would appreciate any comments on the existing code, compiler incompatibilities, etc. I think that this can be a valuable addition to Boost, and would like the feedback necessary to move it toward that goal. An attempt to generalize the Pimpl idom with properly separated interface and implementation

Given I've been using this Pimpl idiom quite extensively lately I've noticed writing the same scaffolding over and over again. Being the lazy bugger as I am I looked around if there was anything available. Turns out there were proposals floated around (like Asger Mangaard's dated around May 2006). However, I did not see anything that would preserve idiom's original purpose/value - the separation of interface and implementation. So, I jogged something with that in mind. Hello, the mentioned file uses std::swap and and other algorithms from the std algorithms library without including the header file algorithm. Also the documentation for 'void swap(rbtree_impl& other)' states: 'If the comparison functor's none swap call throws.' I guess the word 'none' should be removed from the sentence. Regards, Markus

Phil, thank you for your encouragement and Peter, thank you for the pointers. Much and truly appreciated. I'll definitely have a look at both Alan's and Peter's implementations if I can make use of those. It's Saturday -- my family-duties day -- and I am just running out the door. After a rrrreally quick look the grip_ptr seems to provide a deep-copy semantics without exposing private implementation. It that is the case, then Alan and Peter (who implemented a similar thing) are definitely smarter than I am as I was not able to figure out how to achieve that (without exposing implementation details). Then I'll steal :-) their idea (with proper acknowledments :-)). That will have to be done in addition to my currently proposed shared_ptr-based implementation as, for example, my current usage pattern is such that I use one data repository/implementation and share/pass many smart-pointer type instances pointing to that sole implementation. Will let you know how it all fired soon. Best, Vladimir. The concept of a submimage_view is very supportive of creating generic functional components, similar in a way to your spirit library. GIL is a superb base upon which to build a graphics library. Working with experts in functional programming like yourself, using GIL as a base, developing a graphics library for simple primitves, such as lines, circles and polygons would be a trivial matter, and its already basically finished. Anti-grain is a half-finished library which works well in areas. However, I'm persuaded that GIL is the library upon which I think will ultmiately prevail. With adobe supporting the GIL library, who support functional programmers with many of their open-source offerings, it seems like a much better bet to go with adobe. I've moved my application to GIL and have not looked back. I encourage you and any other graphics programmers to give it a strong look. If I can persuade you to look harder at GIL, I would love to pick your brain about how to make a graphics library that works as well as your spirit library.

Strings with character sets

Dear All, After a rather longer delay than I had planned, I have some proof-of-concept code for strings tagged with character sets. You might like to first look at the example usage, here: http://svn.chezphil.org/libpbe/trunk/examples/charsets.cc Note that this file is written using UTF8, but the web server seems to be declaring it to be latin1.... The actual implementation is here: http://svn.chezphil.org/libpbe/trunk/include/charset.hh This is far from complete, but it does have some useful functionality; mainly I have been using it to work out what is possible. [fusion] compiler complaining about incomplete type

RVCT 2.2 is complaining about "return vector<>();" on like 41 of as_vector.hpp (svn trunk) because vector is an incomplete type. This is almost certainly a compiler bug related to it checking the member template before it is instantiated. The simplest workaround is to move "#include <boost/fusion/sequence/conversion/detail/as_vector.hpp>" from the top of <boost/fusion/sequence/container/vector/vector.hpp> to the bottom of the file. [fusion] Can you store noncopyable items in a fusion map?

Can you store non-copyable items in a fusion map? I'm just using it to map types to ptr_containers and I don't want to copy it ever. Windows works just fine but another compiler complains about not being able to create the implicit copy constructor for fusion::map. The documentation implies that a fusion::pair must be assignable and copyable in its expression semantics but I think this may be overly restrictive. Looking at the code it seems that I may need to make a noncopyable_map and noncopyable_pair to achieve this goal. Is this the easiest way? Thanks, Michael Marcin

Seems like in MSVC++ 8.0 boost::iterator_adaptor doesn't work when the associated Value type is incomplete. A *smaller* release concept

Was there any consideration of doing a release that consisted of 1.34.1 and new libraries that have been accepted recently. No other changes.
