Hi John, Just a small question - in 2005 we used logging v1, but we couldnt get it to play along with dlls: logging was defined in one dll (called 'log.dll' - if I remember correctly) , and various parts of the system in other dlls, but we could use log.dll reliably from the other dlls and had to revert to have a log inside each dll ... has this been addressed? Interest in a Memcache C++ Client?

Hi Everyone, In the past few months I've not been able to contribute to the C++ Networking Client Library because I myself was working on a Memcache Client library for C++ in Friendster. Now that the implementation has been open sourced under the Boost Software License (and is available from http://sourceforge.net/projects/memcachepp/) I'd like to ask if there is interest in a special purpose networking client library using the Boost.Asio, Boost.Serialization, Boost.Spirit, and Boost.Regex libraries? I would also like to know if there is interest in evaluating the approaches used to develop a very extensible interface using directives and concepts -- maybe have a discussion on how the approaches used in the library implementation can be generalized or turned into a library in itself. [serialization] Exception basic_string::resize - possible bug in string archiving?

I hate to post this as it's late and I can't help thinking I'm missing something obvious, but here goes. I am getting an exception thrown as a result of executing line 52 of boost/trunk/boost/archive/impl/basic_binary_iarchive.ipp (yes I'm using trunk, but this happens with my 1.34.1 also) The little program shown below causes it, the output of which is, "std::exception: basic_string::resize" I'm using gcc 4.2 on Debian fwiw. --- #include <boost/archive/binary_iarchive.hpp> #include <iostream> #include <string> #include <sstream> int main() { std::string SimpleString( "Archive" ); std::istringstream InputStringStream( SimpleString ); try { boost::archive::binary_iarchive iarchive( InputStringStream ); } catch( const std::exception& e ) { std::cout << "std::exception: " << e.what() << std::endl; } return 0; } --- So am I missing the obvious or is there something more going on here? The following files seem to be missing from subversion: libs/bimap/doc/html/boost_bimap/the_tutorial/additional_information.html libs/math/doc/sf_and_dist/html/math_toolkit/main_overview/compilers_overview.html And the following files might be obsolete now (i.e. they're in subversion but are not generated): libs/fusion/doc/html/fusion/extension/macros.html libs/type_traits/doc/html/boost_typetraits/category/background.html libs/bimap/doc/html/boost_bimap/the_tutorial/hooking_information.html Similarly, the following fowarding html files are for html documents that aren't generated, so they should probably be removed. doc/html/boost_typetraits.html doc/html/functionN.html doc/html/boost_typetraits/background.html doc/html/boost_math.html Daniel

I've spent a tiny amount of time looking over the flyweight documentation and some code and I have a couple minor observations along with a really dumb question. a) when I see boost::flyweight::flyweights it confuses me. I suppose its no big deal. b) I'm curious about the serialization implementation. Why didn't you choose just to serialize the factory? Hello, What is the status of Boost extension / reflection library? (is this a single library or two separate?) Currently I'm mainly concerned about the "extension" part. Was it submitted for review? Or do you want to submit them both together to go in a single review, and for that you plan to first finish the "reflection" part? Because as I understand (am I right?) the extension library is quite finished and should be ready to use, eg. in my app? [rfc] I/O Chain Library, Preview Release 2

Hi, I'm proud to announce preview release 2 of my I/O Chain library. Preview 1 was announced here: http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2007/11/131079.php IOChains is a component-based I/O library similar to Boost.Iostreams, but built from scratch instead of being based on the C++ iostreams interface. It currently supports binary I/O of primitives only, but will be extended to cover text, too. It is built to be type-safe and fast. The main changes since Preview 1 are: Most importantly: The archive actually contains the code. :-) 1) Tested under Visual C++.Net 2003, i.e. VC++ 7.1. 2) Endian conversion is now supported. 3) Supports reading and writing fixed-point numbers. 4) Supports reading and writing stdin, stdout and stderr. (Not Win32, yet.) This also demonstrates the utility of the command interface. 5) A bit-level access pseudo-component was added. 6) A rationale section was added to the documentation. 7) A few example programs were added. (Not tested in Win32, but except for the password reader, they should work.) Boost doesn't appear very suited to develop new libraries outside the tree, it seems. 1) Unpack the archive. 2) Make boost-build.jam point to your trunk Boost.Build, or delete the file if you already have a boost-build.jam in place. 3) Edit Jamroot: set the constant REALBOOST at the very top to point to your trunk Boost. 4) If you want to use the zlib component, add an entry to your user-config.jam for zlib. On Linux, this should be as trivial as lib zlib : : <name>z ; On Win32, it might look like this: lib zlib : : <file>"c:/path/to/zlib/zlib1.lib" : : <include>"c:/path/to/zlib" ; The documentation doesn't build due to some problems I have with Boost.Build. A pre-built version can be found here: http://stud3.tuwien.ac.at/~e0226430/iochain/ If you want to build the docs yourself, remove the <tag> requirement from Jamroot. A note about Visual C++: newer compilers than 7.1 should work, unless they exhibit this bug: http://groups.google.com/group/comp.lang.c++.moderated/browse_thread/thread… If they do, you need to grep the source for BOOST_WORKAROUND and adjust the version number. My geometry needs are fairly simple. At this point, I just need them to create simple graphic primitaves, such as coloring in polygons, determining interesection points, simplyfing lines, etc. All these things appear to be addressed in this library, so I'm looking forward to following this library progress. I've created my own versions of many of these algorithms, but more as a learning excercise and they are not very good. In any event, I would be available if you want to chat offline for some reason.

The second annual Boost conference will take place in Aspen, Colorado, May 5-9. BoostCon is the main face-to-face event for all things Boost, from generic-programming techniques to Boost community, from using Boost libraries to writing Boost libraries, from deployment considerations to promoting the use of Boost more widely, from TR1 to TR2. Given the range and interests of last year's participants, the event again promises to be intense and in depth. We invite you to propose a session. See the BoostCon home page at www.boostcon.com for more information. Session formats Presentations focus on a practitioner’s ideas and experience with anything relevant to Boost and Boost users. Panels feature three or four people presenting their ideas and experiences relating to Boost's relevant, controversial, emerging, or unresolved issues. Tutorials are formally prepared sessions at which instructors teach conference participants specific Boost-relevant skills. I have looked another time to the implementation of the histogram. If we want to implement it in the same class density, than it is needed to provide default parameter for density_cache_size or min/max. In the past, the release manager has waited until a release is almost ready, and then started building and posting release candidates. Getting set up to generate the release candidates takes longer than expected. The release candidates themselves turn out to be missing files or have other problems that take longer than expected to resolve. I propose we start building daily release snapshots, regardless of where we are in a release cycle. I'm calling these "snapshots" rather than "candidates", since they are really only release candidates late in the release cycle. Building snapshots on a daily basis would have these benefits: * The mechanical procedure would become smooth, and so could eliminate one of the delays that plague the current release process. * The snapshots could be inspected, tested, and otherwise checked for quality control on an ongoing basis. Since release tarball problems could be detected and fixed earlier in the release cycle, this could reduced or eliminated a source of delays. * The release workload could better distributed, since generation of snapshots could be handled by someone other than the release manager. Comments? Would anyone like to volunteer to take this on? They would need a high speed internet connection as the files involved are quite large. --Beman

[Boost.build] Install_name wrong on OS X dylibs with latest CVS

I just checked out and built boost on OS X 10.4 and there is a problem with the "install_name" or "rpath" on the dynamic libraries that are built. The "install_name" that is embedded in the libraries are basically useless as they do not contain a correct path to the libraries. Example for the filesystem is: 532:[mjackson@Thor:boost]$ otool -L /Users/Shared/Sandbox/boost- install/lib/libboost_filesystem-1_35.dylib /Users/Shared/Sandbox/boost-install/lib/libboost_filesystem-1_35.dylib: bin.v2/libs/filesystem/build/darwin/release/ libboost_filesystem-1_35.dylib (compatibility version 0.0.0, current version 0.0.0) bin.v2/libs/system/build/darwin/release/ libboost_system-1_35.dylib (compatibility version 0.0.0, current version 0.0.0) /usr/lib/libstdc++.6.dylib (compatibility version 7.0.0, current version 7.4.0) /usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 1.0.0) /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 88.3.9) There are a couple of choices for the "Correct" value. The best (IMHO) would be to put in the absolute path to the installed library, so on my system that would be: /Users/Shared/Sandbox/boost-install/lib/libboost_filesystem-1_35.dylib We could also put _no_ path on the install_name, but that requires the user to additionally set the DYLD_LIBRARY_PARH which Apple discourages. The fix would be to add the following to the "actions link.dll bind LIBRARIES" section of the boost/tools/build/v2/tools/darwin.jam file: -headerpad_max_install_names -install_name "{Install_prefix_lib_location}$(<[1]:D=:S=.dylib)" ..... I do not know anything about bjam so I have no idea how to get the "Install_prefix_lib_location". Could some one tell me how to get at that value somehow and I will create a patch. -- Mike Jackson OS X Build Specialist

Gauging interest for MT async signals utility

While on posix typically there is no provision for the thread context the signal handler will run, on windows the operating system delivers signals into a separate dedicated thread. This makes it possible e.g. to use locking primitives without risk for deadlock. I wrote a little utility that mimics that behavior on posix platforms by blocking all signals during application startup and launching a dedicated thread that has signal handling turned on. Since every other thread (that has been started after main) inherits the all-blocking sigmask, there is only one thread to handle the signals. The utility also allows a boost function pointer for the signal handler. I would be interested if there is believe such a utility would be worth including to boost. Also I would be interested on critics and opinions.
