A recent change in SVN head (whether directly to shared_ptr or something else I'm not sure) has broken some of the TR1 tests: http://beta.boost.org/development/tests/trunk/developer/output/daw-msvc71-b… The two patches below would fix this, but as ever I'm open to other/better suggestions. Some notes on Egg

Sorry this is not a full review. I had a half an hour to dedicate to this, and that just isn't enough time for the library. First, I want to say that I find some of the possibilities of this library intriuging, and whatever the outcome of this review I hope to see some form of it in boost in the future. However, I find the documentation difficult to read. Some of this is because of grammatical considerations. For this part of the documentation, I suggest the author works with any of the various people on this list who have offered to assist with ddocumentation in the past. I think there are still some offers with contact information that can be found on the wiki. The other problem I have with the documentation is that the author seems to know what he is talking about well enough that he doesn't realize that it is not complete enough for many potential readers. For this I have two suggestions. The first is to include more examples in the flow of the documentation. Some of them should betrivial, while others show more complete use cases. Every time a new concept or use is introduced, consider how an example could improve the discussion. This has become a hazard in the Boost community because we are all far more steeped in functional programming concepts and practices than the general run of C++ programmers and this leads to a communications disconnect for what we think is clear documentation compared to what the mainstream community needs for clear documentation. My second suggestion is to think a lot about how to reorganize the documentation with a new user of the library in mind. If someone comes to the library without knowing what you are doing, how can you show them each of the advantages of the library, preferably one at a time? How can you build the ddocs to draw them through that process and to make it obvious what parts of the library will help solve what problems for the user? An example is the "How to Read the Docs" section at the bottom of the Quick Start page. The reader is two pages into the docs, and a new reader who doesn't understand will have already given up before getting to this section. Separate it and make it clear where to find it in the ToC, instead of hiding it in another page. I haven't looked at the implementation enough to have a usable opinion, so I can really only talk about the documentation. In my opinion, the docs need substantial improvement before the library should be accepted, and I strongly encourage the author to make those improvements whatever the outcome of the review. [real_concept] Problem with round() family of functions

Hi John, while moving the new Spirit to the Boost SVN I came across the new functions introduced to allow rounding and truncation to an integer. Cool, thanks for adding these. But now I have the problem, that these functions are in a different namespace as the original real_concept class, which makes it impossible for the compiler to find these through ADL. Is there any reason why you didn't put the round() and truncate() functions for the real_concept class in the 'namespace concepts' instead? Do I miss something? Regards Hartmut

[shifted_ptr] Updated thread and <const T> support

Greetings: Upon testing the library on day to day projects, support for <const T> objects is invaluable and thus was added. Support for volatile objects could be important in certain cases also but requires more overloaded functions to be added (const ^2 + volatile ^2). Furthermore I have changed the code to use the new thread_specific_ptr<> object handler but I have disabled it by default with BOOST_SH_DISABLE_THREADS. Thanks, -Phil

Dear all: if you #define BOOST_REGEX_MATCH_EXTRA, using char type will crash, but using string is well. Is that a bug? My environment is Windows XP, C++ Builder 2007. Hey, I'm not sure if anyone has thought of this, but with the new unordered containers coming up (they've already been introduced in the first visual studio feature pack), it sure would be nice to have some new additions to ptr_container: ptr_unordered_set ptr_unordered_multiset ptr_unordered_map ptr_unordered_multimap They might need better names, but you get the basic idea. Any plans on implementing these?

[serialization] bug in wide character strings

We've discovered an issue Boost has writing and reading wide character strings (wchar_t* and std::wstrings) to non-wide character file streams (std::ifstream and std::ofstream). The issue stems from the fact that wide characters are written and read as a sequence of characters (in text_oarchive_impl.ipp and text_iarchive_impl.ipp, respectively). For text streams, an EOF character terminates the reading of a file on Windows. Some wide characters have EOF (value = 26 decimal) as one of the bytes so reading that byte causes early termination of the read. We have worked around the issue by deriving our own input and output archives from text_i|oarchive_impl<Archive> and overriding load_override() and save_override for std::wstring and wchar_t*. Our implementation just sequences through the wide characters and writes them 1 by 1 as wchar_t to the archive. This isn't very elegant and is even less readable in the file than the current implementation but does resolve the problem. I looked at both Boost 1.34.1 and 1.35 and didn't see a difference in the implementation here so I'm assuming 1.35 still has the issue. I've been working with 1.34.1. Is this a known issue? Does 1.35 solve it in some other subtle way? Is there a better way that doesn't require us to derive our own streams? If not, is there a more elegant way of implementing the reading and writing of wide characters ourselves? Thanks in advance. Jeff Faust

Spirit2 lexer feature request

Hi Hartmut, I'm looking at the lexer library, and I must say I'm loving it. But there's a feature request I would like to make. Is it possible to allow paramiterization of the ID type. It is now fixed in std::size_t, and it is possibly a very good default. But how would one do to parse UTF-32 in a 32 bit machine? Also, allowing any other type (EqualComparable) would let people use string types as IDs, making it easier to log a execution, since you wouldn't have to map enum values to strings. Spirit2 Boost 1.35.0 and proto

I had yet another idea which might improve the situation for the virtual inheritance problem that my optimized implementation of enable_shared_from_this<T> has. Additionally, the solution provides another useful feature. Currently, shared_from_this() has no parameter and thus needs to either store the pointer to T* (as part of the internal weak_ptr<T>) like the 1.35.0-solution does, or it needs to use the this-pointer. The this-pointer for the class is of type enable_shared_from_this<T>*, not of type T* - this is why my improved version needs to static-cast the this-pointer, which in turn requires a non-virtual inheritance between enable_shared_from_this<T> and T. The problem can be solved by either extending or modifying the interface: When we add the following method(s): template< typename U > shared_ptr<U> shared_from_this( U* u ); template< typename U > shared_ptr<U const> shared_from_this( U const* u ); it's then possible for a method of T to call shared_from_this(this) instead of shared_from_this() to gain a shared_ptr<T>. Additionally, the interface is generally useful, as it could be called with other pointers, e.g. to sub-objects (member variables) of T. It's IMHO a nice match to the shared_ptr-constructor which takes a shared_ptr and an additional plain pointer. Peter, Frank, what do you think?

[Python][TR1] Broken in V1.35 if Boost.Python used with Boost.TR1

Hi all, compiling Boost Python while having the Boost TR1 headers in the include path is broken in V1.35 (trunk as well, BTW), at least while using VC8.1 on Windows or gcc on Cygwin. The simplest way to reproduce this is: create a file test.cpp: #include <boost/python.hpp> Compile it with: cl -c -MDd -I$PYTHON_ROOT\include -I$BOOST_ROOT -I$BOOST_ROOT\boost\tr1\tr1 test.cpp or gcc -c -I$PYTHON_ROOT/include -I$BOOST_ROOT -I$BOOST_ROOT/boost/tr1/tr1 test.cpp voila! [boost.pool] Workaround for a msvc 7.1 & 8.0 bug surfaced in the boost 1.35 release

Hi all. One of our projects failed to build using the Boost 1.35 release and we traced it down to a compiler bug with MSVC 7.1. & 8.0. We have not tested any earlier compiler versions and MSVB 9.0 seems to have fixed the bug (and seems to compile the project in about half the time it took in MSVC 8.0 :-)))). We found a fix that should be applied to boost/pool/detail/mutex.hpp: The CRITICAL_SECTION type should be referenced using its fully qualified name '::CRITICAL_SECTION'. I am attaching a suggested patch file for boost/pool/detail/mutex.hpp. If no problems are found with it should be applied to the trunkas well as the release branch for the upcoming 1.35.1 patch release. The patch uses fully qualified names for other global Windows/posix API calls as well (e.g ::InitializeCriticalSection(), ::DeleteCriticalSection(), ::EnterCriticalSection(), ::LeaveCriticalSection()) but that does not have direct impact on this concrete bug. Hi all, initially I was hoping to find some time over the last weekend to go through the reviews in great detail to put together a proper review report. Well, as things happen, I was not able to find the time :-( To avoid further delays, here is the short version of the review result: Proto got 16 reviews (That's well above average! Thanks to all for participating), out of which 15 have been positive. The one 'No' essentially stated that the library, even if doubtless very useful, shouldn't be accepted yet, mainly because there has to be done more work in the area of formalizing the problem domain. In my opinion this is an overwhelming result and I'm whole heartily agreeing with the majority of the voters. Proto is accepted as a Boost library. The discussions have been very detailed and there have been raised a lot of (mostly minor) issues, but Eric is aware of the problems and is working on solving them. We've discovered an issue Boost has writing and reading wide character strings (wchar_t* and std::wstrings) to non-wide character file streams (std::ifstream and std::ofstream). The issue stems from the fact that wide characters are written and read as a sequence of characters (in text_oarchive_impl.ipp and text_iarchive_impl.ipp, respectively). For text streams, an EOF character terminates the reading of a file on Windows. Some wide characters have EOF (value = 26 decimal) as one of the bytes so reading that byte causes early termination of the read. We have worked around the issue by deriving our own input and output archives from text_i|oarchive_impl<Archive> and overriding load_override() and save_override for std::wstring and wchar_t*. Our implementation just sequences through the wide characters and writes them 1 by 1 as wchar_t to the archive. This isn't very elegant and is even less readable in the file than the current implementation but does resolve the problem. I looked at both Boost 1.34.1 and 1.35 and didn't see a difference in the implementation here so I'm assuming 1.35 still has the issue. I've been working with 1.34.1. Is this a known issue? Does 1.35 solve it in some other subtle way? Is there a better way that doesn't require us to derive our own streams? If not, is there a more elegant way of implementing the reading and writing of wide characters ourselves? Thanks in advance. Jeff Faust
