I'll try to shed some light on what has happened to property_tree since review and why it's been dragging. Since review I had some feedback about the library. The issue raised most frequently was unsatisfactory performance. Ptree does too many memory allocations, and thus is fairly slow and unsuitable for many users. Plus some of the original parsers (XML parser specifically) were really slow and took ages to compile, especially on gcc. Because this is headers only library that is supposed to be lightweight, this was a serious problem. To solve it I spent some months implementing a very fast in-situ XML parser for the library (called rapidxml - see rapidxml project on sourceforge). This was finished in August last year and integrated with property tree. It works very well and is so fast that time to parse XML is now totally insignificant compared to the time it takes to build a ptree from the parsed data. The allocations problem remains. I have been unable to come up with a scheme that would reduce the number of allocations without compromising simplicty of the library. The key point is that I want to maintain validity of iterators in presence of insertions/erases. This rules out array based containers. The best I can think of is a custom list implementation. That has potential to reduce number of allocations by roughly 30%, which is not enough IMO. On top of that I'm not sure whether the heavy type-parametrization of the library (i.e. lots of template parameters everywhere) is a good thing. It definitely makes it harder to document, use and understand. In all the the feedback I got there is no evidence of anyone actually using these template parameters. So IMO these should be reduced to just the character type. Otherwise the library pretends to be a generic tree container, which it wasn't supposed to be. Finally, probably the main reason the library is dragging is docs. The original docs (still available at http://kaalus.atspace.com/ptree/doc/index.html) were written in a gargantuan effort manually in HTML. This was a horrible experience that I do not wish to repeat. Some sort of automated docs generation is needed. I know about QuickBook and I like its wiki syntax. About a year ago I even managed to setup the toolchain correctly (including doxygen). The output of [code->doxygen->quickbook->boostbook->xml->xslt->html] pipe was not very satisfactory though, the reference entries were badly formatted and scattered all over the place in a disorganized fashion. I wouldn't like to give up the library because I still work on it occasionally. But as I wasn't able to solve major problems (docs tools, performance) satisfactorily, the work towards the release has ground to a halt. IMO the issues that should be addressed before release are: - Simplification by removing some of the template arguments (arguable - maybe someone is using that?) - Figure out which parsers are unneccessary and get rid of them (cmdline parser?) - Get some docs toolchain to work properly and provide up-to-date docs. Lots of the text can be ported over (and my monkey english corrected :-) from the original docs. - Speedup through use of a custom container (to replace std::list, needs some profiling work if it's even worth it) If someone could help with the docs toolchain (Quickbook experts? Any alternatives?) I'm happy to do the rest. I should probably give up on trying to speed it up further and concentrate on getting it into releasable state. thanks, Marcin

Greetings Boost: I am happy re-submitting after 4 years my final design and implementation proposal of "shifted_ptr" which includes very useful tools named "list", "stack" and "roofof". The new containers consisting of STL-like ones but offering external access to the nodes, removing the need of dynamically allocated nodes and thus offers multi-dimensional control over their elements. "roofof" is a one line helper function used in conjunction with the mentionned containers to find the root address of the class housing the member used by the container in question. In contrast with its previous submission, "shifted_ptr" now relates to a memory manager of constant complexity and of size: sizeof(void *) * 2. It take advantage of the low-memory consuption, fast execution and very versatile interface. It proposes a very different concept, removes the need of current functions such as: "enable_shared_from_this", destroys the "cyclic pointer" problem and is now perfectly type-safe. The former reference counted smart pointer was renamed to "shifted_ptr_base" and merged properly with Boost standards. Morever "shiifted_ptr" is closely tied to the current "shared_ptr" that uses objects derived from "sp_counted_base". This was extended to objects deriving from "owned_base", which includes the necessary information that is handled by the smart pointer plus a smart destructer that differentiates arrays from standard objects and destroys the object accordingly. I have not yet written entirely its documentation but I have included a well documented reference to its API. I would like to schedule a review for now and by then the documentation shall be completed. I am also aware the library doesn't yet handle multi-threaded applications but I would like to start with getting the library better known. The theory behind is perfectly reliable but I can't say I forgot technical issues. Greetings: I have made many bug fixes to the library and it now runs properly a previous example requested. The code is much more robust and I would like requesting everyone to replace any 2.x series with this one. There is unfortunately a situation on MSVC when shifted_ptr<> is used with arrays. I believe there is an array to pointer to array convertion problem at runtime (inside new_sh) but this issue needs to be further investigated. I disabled array functionality for MSVC until it can be fixed. Everything works fine under GCC. Regards, -Phil

I've committed the change to throw_exception.hpp which enables the support for exception_ptr and other Boost Exception features for all exceptions emitted from boost::throw_exception(). Boost Exception has been tested on a variety of platforms and compilers, but the throw_exception() function is used by many different Boost libraries, some of which work even on compilers that are not officially supported by Boost today; so the new throw_exception() behavior can be disabled using #define BOOST_EXCEPTION_DISABLE. Some of the HP-UX_pa_risc_aCC tests of Boost Exception fail with exit status 132 (signal 4, illegal instruction), for example http://tinyurl.com/49eh7d (this isn't a global HP-UX issue, as the tests pass on other HP-UX systems.) [smart_ptr] regression test case enhancement

I wrote two reference implementations for enable_shared_from_this.hpp, both are now in <https://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/sandbox/libs/smart_ptr/daniel_frey>. Both are tested and pass all regression tests - except for the non-enhanced version which obviously doesn't pass esft_constructor_test. The important thing is, that this test showed something else: The current tests without esft_constructor tests don't check who takes ownership of an enable_shared_from_this-derived object in case there are multiple simultaneous owners available. The attached patch checks that - and AFAICT it would fail with the 1.35.0 esft. (Both reference versions from above do pass). Should this be added? Regards, Daniel

Hi Ion, Sometimes I need to go through all elements in such a container. However, it is know that the number of elements is low, so I unroll the loop manually. In that case I would like to be able to do the following: const T& t1 = flat_set[0u]; const T& t2 = flat_set[1u]; Alternatively, provide a base() function that directly give read access to the underlying container: const T& t1 = flat_set.base()[0u]; Comments? -Thorsten

Need feature branch for compile in-place static linking

Hi! I have in the past sometimes[1] described another alternative way to linking and quite a few people also seemed interested. Basically, it works by including the whole library code into the application that links to it. However, as opposed to a header-only library, the code is only included once in a translation unit of the linking program instead of inline via the header files. Example: --------- // lib.hpp: void foo(); // lib.cpp: void foo() { frobnicate(bar); } // program1.cpp: #include <lib.hpp> // program2.cpp: #include <lib.hpp> // program_main.cpp: #include <lib.hpp> #include <lib.cpp> int main() { foo(); } As you see, lib.cpp is included into exactly one translation unit of the final executable (it's up to the user to make sure that it's exactly done once). Why bother? ------------ The very simple reason is simplicity. * Even on a system where I don't have admin access, I can easily download and compile against Boost, without having to first compile shared/static libs or having to modify paths in order for the runtime linker to find DLLs. * Even if I had admin access, I would still be reluctant to installing Boost's trunk. * When I'm testing different compiler settings trying to get another few percent of performance, I don't have to compile another Boost version for each compiler setting. * I don't have to know which library to link to, which lowers entry barriers for new Boost users. * I can easily compile and distribute programs without having to worry about required shared libraries. * I have a guarantee that the library's ABI actually conforms to the ABI that my program expects, simply because I compiled it with the exact same compiler settings. Drawbacks: ----------- The main drawback is that you can't guarantee that library implementation code is compiled with e.g. NOMINMAX defined. If an incompatible environment is detected, I would simply use #error to alert the user. Further, 'private' symbols (static functions or functions in anonymous namespaces) can't be reused by different sourcefiles because they are all compiled into the same translation units. If this happens, I would simply try to rename things until the clash is resolved or maybe move them to a separate namespace. Tasks to completion: --------------------- * Add one central file compile_inplace.cpp for each library. This would mean that for Boost.Thread we then include "boost/thread/compile_inplace.cpp" from exactly one translation unit in order to get it to work. * Fix some code that doesn't lend itself to inclusion in user code. One particular example is in Boost.Thread, where two sourcefiles include another file that contains utility functions in an anonymous namespace. If both sourcefiles are compiled by the same TU, the anonymous namespace is also compiled twice leading to multiple definitions. Just adding an include guard helps. * Prepare import/export code. This is mainly a win32 task which means programming the macros that control __declspec(dllexport) or __declspec(dllimport). Basically this means switching to static linking (where neither of the above are generated) but also turning off autolinking (because there is no according library that the linker should link to). * Add error checking. In particular, you must not e.g. include compile_inplace.cpp if you are doing other kinds linking. * Documentation updates. This mostly means adding this way of linking to the pages that describe which library to link against as an alternative way. I would even use this form in examples for the various libs exactly because it is the easiest way to link against a library. What do I need: ---------------- What I need is a folder on SVN for the branch and according write permissions so I can actually work on it. Of course, I could also create a repository somewhere and just branch Boost there, but this has the disadvantage that it makes it harder to merge the changes back (SVN isn't particularly good on inter-repository merges) and also it would make it easier for people to test the branch (you could 'svn switch' to it and it would only transfer the changes). [log] Problem with Unicode and linker error

I downloaded Boost.Log from http://www.torjo.com/code/log2.zip to give it a try but ran into two problems immediately (with VC++ 9.0 on Windows XP): * In the (old?) documentation at http://www.torjo.com/log2/doc/html/miscelaneous.html#misc_unicode a macro called BOOST_LOG_DONOT_USE_WCHAR_T is mentioned which can be defined on Windows to use char-based classes instead of wchar_t-based classes. This macro doesn't seem to work though. I couldn't find any other macro I might be able to define to use char-based classes if UNICODE is defined? * The linker is trying to find a library called boost_log-vc90-mt-gd-1_34_1.lib while the filename is really libboost_log-vc90-mt-gd-1_34_1.lib. I renamed the file but got then a linker error (unresolved external symbol "... boost::logging::find_log_by_name(...)"). My code consists only of BOOST_DECLARE_LOG and BOOST_DEFINE_LOG though (thus I would expect I can't make much wrong here :)? Anyone can help? Or is the zip archive I downloaded actually the latest code? Boris

boost/exception/enable_exception_cloning.hpp uses std::bad_alloc without #include'ing <new>. Because of this, some exception library tests fail to compile on HP-UX. Thanks, Boris

Can someone explain why this simple snippet fails to compile? Am I doing something wrong or is this iterator_range problem?
