backwards compatibility

Hello, I realize that Boost doesn't promise ABI compatibility across releases, nor even API compatibility according to the FAQ: How can the Boost libraries be used successfully for important projects? Many of the Boost libraries are actively maintained and improved, so **backward compatibility with prior version isn't always possible**. Deal with this by freezing the version of the Boost libraries used by your project. Only upgrade at points in your project's life cycle where a bit of change will not cause problems. Individual bug fixes can always be obtained from the boost repository. (emphasis mine) OK, but *in practice* is there a large amount of work adapting existing client code to a new release? I'm asking in order to gauge whether it is useful for a linux distribution (Debian) to keep multiple versions of Boost available simultaneously; e.g. 1.34.1 and 1.35. Currently Debian provides only the latest version of Boost. Thanks, -Steve

shared_ptr.hpp & Intel C++ error

I'm routinely testing Boost.Python compilation with Intel C++ under Fedora 3 (64-bit). Today I tried Fedora 5, 6, 9, and I'm getting the error below. It can be reproduced by simply including boost/shared_ptr.hpp. I tried adding -pthread but it didn't make a difference. Is this a known problem? Is there a trick to get around it? Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, it doesn't help in my case, because I have a x86_64 platform. I blindly tried all includes I could find in the Intel C++ directory, but none helped. A look at the docs also didn't lead to any insights... Greetings, boost::optional<T &> seems to be implemented in terms of a boolean flag and an aligned_storage. Wouldn’t it make more sense to make boost::optional<T &> a thin wrapper over T*? This would save a couple of bytes, speed up get_ptr by a couple of ticks, and perhaps reduce compilation times. Also, from the documentation[1]: > Rebinding semantics for the assignment of initialized optional references has been chosen to provide consistency among initialization states even at the expense of lack of consistency with the semantics of bare C++ references. It is true that optional<U> strives to behave as much as possible as U does whenever it is initialized; but in the case when U is T&, doing so would result in inconsistent behavior w.r.t to the lvalue initialization state. optional<U> does not have the semantics of U, but rather those of U*. Non pre-emptible Boost.Thread

Hello, A while ago, I implemented the Boost.Thread API in terms of Windows Fibers and <uncontext.h> functionality. The result is the ability to run code written with boost threads in a single OS thread. I find it useful for writing tests where determinism is important i.e. to test algorithmic correctness in isolation from synchronization- related concerns. I haven't updated it to mirror the new 1.35 API yet, but I was wondering if any other boost users would be interested in this or if it might be thought suitable for inclusion in the boost library collection. Hi, The Boost.Thread library provides a thread_group class for a collection of threads that are related in some fashion. This collection is dynamic, i.e. we can add and remove threads to this collection. When this collection is known at the group creation and can not change a static thread group could be useful. [filesystem] "leaf"

I was just reviewing the filesystem docs and came across "leaf()". I'm sure this isn't the first time I've seen it, but this time I picked up a little semantic dissonance. Normally we think of "leaf" in the context of a tree as being a thing with no children. An interior node like a directory that has files or other directories in it is usually not called a "leaf." I wonder if this is the best possible name? Is there a precedent we can draw on in some other language/library? In python, it's os.path.basename(p). Hey Hartmut, Joel, I started playing with spirit-2/lex (on the trunk), specifically examples/lex/example4.cpp, thought I'd try to parse some python. I've hit an error that was already asked about a month or so ago. It appears to be because this guy: http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/browser/trunk/boost/spirit/home/qi/detail/a… doesn't have 'construct' overloads for various types (conversion to unsigned is the one that comes up in the example). I dug around and found construct.hpp, http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/browser/trunk/boost/spirit/home/qi/detail/c… which does have them, but they forward to parse(), using proto placeholders from over in support/placeholders.hpp. This ends up coming round again to assign_to. At this point I can't decide whether this is going to be detangleable or not. I thought I'd ask for some hints on what things are supposed to look like in the end, if so. [mingw] gcc-4.3.0-alpha

Hi boosters, On WinXP32 I'm using the gcc-4.3.0 released as an alpha version by the mingw folks. The alpha status is AFAIK because it has to tested to some extend before it can be considered stable. Installing this compiler and make it work AFAIK doesn't work with any of the .exe mingw installer. The mingw-runtime, binutils etc. have to be downloaded an extracted by hand. Additionally the c++config.h should be altered to not performing concepts checks, since this isn't enabled in any linux-distro I know. I've done that and got the mingw folder packed as and 180MB sized .tgz . While I'm not recommending compiling anything for production, it might be helpful for the library authors working on windows and want to check if their code works. Is there interest by the windows centric authors to get it and are the boost-consulting people willing to host such a package at their servers? Best, -- Maik

in end_impl.hpp (at the very bottom) static type call(Sequence& t) { return type(); } The unused t causes a hideous amount of warnings (gcc4.1.2). Took me 15 mins trying to find my error til I discovered that those pages of output were not really an error message but 'only' a (very annoying) warning. Please fix this. Thank you. [Python] undefined symbol error for python bindings

Hi, I am unable to correctly build python bindings for boost graph library. All the relevant code compiles successfully. However when I import boost.graph module within python it fails with following error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> File "/../.../bgl-python/lib/python/boost/graph/__init__.py", line 16, in <module> from boost.graph._graph import * ImportError: /../.../bgl-python/lib/python/boost/graph/_graph.so: undefined symbol: _ZN5boost5graph6python11basic_graphINS_11undirectedSEED1Ev I am using latest bgl, boost_1_35_0, and intel compiler. Hi, boost::mutex is a model of Lockable but do not conforms to a SharedLockable, UpgradeLockable concepts. Do you think that we can make an adapter of boost::mutex to be a model of SharedLockable, UpgradeLockable or there is something I've missed? Seems to me that if we have "detach()," it we should be asking whether a thread is "attached()," rather than "joinable()." Our documentation says "if *this refers to a thread of execution..." all over it, which would seem to indicate that joinable() is an important question even when you're not about to join(). boost::filesystem::remove() throws on some symlinks

Hello If one creates a symlink like this "ln -s sym sym" (to itself symlink), bfs::exists("sym") will throw because the documentation defines it to do so (and I have nothing against it doing so, although in my programs because of this I am forced to just use "lstat()" and I can't replace using "lstat()" to check if something exists with bfs::exists). However, I do think that bfs::remove("sym") throwing for the same reason (because it calls upon bfs::exists()) is the wrong thing to do. The source around bfs::remove() implementation even try to solve the issue of "dangling symlinks" as they call it by having an exception in case bfs::exists returns false and the target path points to a dangling symlink and still tries to remove it. Unfortunetly, exists will throw in my example of a symlink (not even dangling technically speaking :) ) even tho a remove on that kind of symlink should work just fine (it does work in shell or just doing std::remove()).
