[format] Compiler error when using the Sun compiler.

Can someone please assist? This code below doesn't compile when I use the Sun compiler. My company is currently using boost 1.33.0, and I cannot do anything about that, but I want to use boost::format. What modification can I make to the format files to fix this issue? GIL - Fast Alpha Blends

[Units] A first step to ease the usage of Units' quantities inside of functors created with the Lambda library

Hello, I'm pleased to see so much activity in the development of Boost.Units recently. I try to apply it myself in some code to model physical systems. There it helps me a lot to ensure the correct use of the model parameters inside the model equations and to ensure the correct composition of components to a system model. Certain component behaviour, I would like to parametrize for each component instance by passing a functor describing, e.g., a signal waveform or a non-linear relation between to quantities. I therefore tried to combine Boost.Units with Boost.Lambda and Boost.Function. I noticed that currently Units and Lambda use two independent systems of trait classes to determine the return type of algebraic operations like +, -, *, /. This requires to litter the lambda expression with a lot of ret<return_type>(...) function calls to construct a functor containing boost::units::quantity<U, V> instances. However, the trait classes used by Units and Lambda are very similar, so I created as a first solution a header file <lambda.hpp> (see attachment), which extends Boost.Lambda's return type reduction system through partial specialization to use Boost.Units' trait classes in case boost::unit::quantity<U,V> are involved in operator[+|-|*|/]() calls. Maybe it's also useful for others and could even become part of Boost.Units after some further improvements. However, there are some open issues: - Can some of the partial specializations be dropped? - Is there a need to add other specializations (e.g, for boost::units::unit<Dim, System, Enable>)? - Is there a way to work around boost::lambda:bind's limitation concerning the binding of overloaded functions? The required static_cast to the function pointer (referring, e.g., a function from boost/units/cmath.hpp) is tedious. The attached small test program <units_with_lambda_test.cpp> demonstrates its usage and tedious bind issue, for which I haven't found a solution yet. Boost.Lambda requires calls to functions to be postponed using boost::lambda::bind(), so that they are executed not only once upon functor creation but at each functor call. Bind has the unfortunate limitation that it cannot resolve calls to overloaded functions. Thus, each time a call to an overloaded function (e.g., all functions defined in <boost/units/cmath.hpp>) is made, a lengthy static_cast<return_type (*)(argument_type)>(function_name) is needed for the first bind argument to help the compiler to find the overloaded function, which can accept the function arguments passed by the other bind arguments. Could this be somehow avoided or at least the syntax simplified? I'm thinking of, e.g., a templated function or (more ugly) a preprocessor macro adding the required static_cast based on some trait class or typeof. I'm looking forward to your feedback. Boost crashing before main() called.

I have a Win32 program compiled and linked with Visual C++ Express 9 that is crashing during the loading of DLLs, and it appears that it is the boost filesystem code specifically failing. This problem occurs under Windows XP but oddly not under Vista. Can someone tell me how I can compile Boost under Windows? I did not find any info in the documentation section. Thanks.

GCC changed the way #elif's are handled (is now more std-compliant apparently) but this broke all the #elif BOOST_PP_ITERATION_DEPTH() == N lines. They need to be replaced with #elif defined(BOOST_PP_ITERATION_DEPTH) #if BOOST_PP_ITERATION_DEPTH == N ... #endif Attached is a patch that does so (against trunk). Cheers, Chris

Thanks for the input on trying to use boost::lambda::bind instead of boost::bind, unfortunately there is no bind in the lambda namespace. I'm using Boost 1.35, and in my version "namespace lambda" only exists in boost\lambda\construct.hpp and only contains a single templated struct constructor, there is no bind available :( Any ideas? I'm trying all sort of funny syntax variations to no avail... Dear all, I often find myself in the need of the above assertion mechanism where the actual assertion should only checked if the first condition is true. Of course, we could write this as if( IF ) BOOST_ASSERT( THEN ); but this has the potential downside that the compiler cannot completely optimize away the function calls inside the if-statement. The code is poorly written but instead of trying to clean it up myself I thought this would be a good opportunity to learn to use gil. I think to get started I first need to create a gil image view from the raw data. Is this right? I looked at the image view from raw data function in the doxygen documentation but I don't see any for 1 channel data image data. Am I missing something? Thanks, Michael Marcin

[interprocess] shared memory map only working with built-in types?

Hello Ion, Title says it all really: the attached mini-program gives me a segmentation fault on ubuntu linux 8.04 with gcc 4.2.3 when trying to read back the shared memory between process invocations (trying a similar program on XP also fails). If the comments on lines 33/34 and 66-67/68-69 are swapped it works as expected. I've also tried and failed to get it working with my own types as well as std::string. Most of the interprocess tests work fine on my system* so I wonder if it's not possible to use UDTs with this sort of shared memory? I couldn't find anything in the docs (so far) that suggests what I'm doing is silly/wrong. Another minor problem I'm getting is that shm_unlink isn't found by default; adding <library>/boost/thread/ to the dependencies in my Jamfile gets around this, but I'm not sure what the 'correct' way of fixing this is (do you want more info about this one?). The need for a 1.35.1 release

As a user I am concerned about the lack of a 1.35.1 release. We cannot use 1.35 because it contains a bug. When 1.36 is released it will fix this bug, but it will also inevitably introduce new bugs some of which may also be show-stoppers for us. Which means we have to wait for 1.37, and so on... We need to have bugfix releases for released version of boost that do not change anything that is not absolutely necessary to fix bugs. Without this we are going to have to manually patch bugs as fixes come out, which makes a mockery of the whole idea of having boost releases (and makes boost much less appealing as a library). Hi Everyone, In the 1.35.0 release, I see that boost/archive/array/iarchive.hpp has a commented out 'load_optimized' function which is not commented out in the trunk. When deserializing to an std::vector<uint32_t, boost::pool_allocator<uint32_t> >, I see that the optimized implementation will first get the correct size, set the receiving container's size correctly, and then put the contents of the array into the container. The question I have is why is this function commented out in the 1.35.0 release? I had to find out the hard way that this causes insane memory usage when deserializing to an std::vector<uint32_t, boost::pool_allocator<uint32_t> >, mainly because if it uses an implementation that grows the vector one element at a time, can (and usually would) cause multiple calls to resize the container and make a lot of calls to the pool allocator. The way the pool allocator grows causes an abrupt usage in memory unnecessarily. Should this be considered a blocker issue that merits a 1.35.1 release? Insights would be most appreciated. My solution for the meantime is to stick to the Boost svn trunk version that I know the current application I'm working on works fine with -- eventually though I hope to be able to move to a "stable" Boost release. -- Dean Michael C.
