Despite using Boost for a little while I've only just noticed that many, (perhaps most or all) Boost files do not contain the Subversion release id. This seems less than ideal, but I can't imagine it is not a considered decision. So why is it this way? - Rob.

[interprocess] difference in timed_wait behavior under linux and windows

Hello, I have the following issue, when I'm calling interprocess_condition.timed_wait with time equals to boost::posix_time::pos_infin it has different behavior under linux and under windows. Under windows it is similar to interprocess_condition.wait, but under linux it fails with assertion here: file boost\interprocess\sync\posix\interprocess_condition.hpp: inline bool interprocess_condition::do_timed_wait (const boost::posix_time::ptime &abs_time, interprocess_mutex &mut) { timespec ts = detail::ptime_to_timespec(abs_time); pthread_mutex_t* pmutex = &mut.m_mut; int res = 0; res = pthread_cond_timedwait(&m_condition, pmutex, &ts); assert(res == 0 || res == ETIMEDOUT); return res != ETIMEDOUT; } I don't know which behavior is better, but I suggest it should be the same for both OSes. Hi all, Should I expect any further feedback re BENUM? David, Marcus: we've discussed specific issues (portability of variadic macros, smart_enum features) - do you have further questions, comments re my replies, or recommended actions before submission for formal review? Should I be doing more to pursue suggestions or solicit feedback? Is anyone else currently reviewing the code in the vault, experiment with usage in a real system, or planning to do so? If so, can we keep in touch re progress? If I don't hear anything to the contrary this week, I'll start doing the preparations for requesting a formal review, specifically my TODO list currently looks like: - better (HTML) docs / simpler usage examples, - clean up comment in headers (doxygen style?)/copyrights, - optimise Info_Container value-to-identifier resolution (have resisted early optimisation as design/functional changes might invalidate), - add a few representative container/feature combinations in easier-to-use macros. BTW / I stumbled across an old submission for "boost_enum" - it seems to "go the whole hog" and address some of the bit-masking issues BENUM does (though not as flexibly ;-P). This contrasts with smart_enum's relative simplicity but cleanliness. I love simplicity (I wrote a cut-down version of BENUM for my introspective preprocessor project which only supports incrementing-from-0 enumerations and no bit masking/ORing because I didn't like the idea of all the extra baggage/inefficiencies), but I think people look to boost for reasonably generic and comprehensive solutions. But, boost_enum work seemed to peter out. smart_enum petered out. Both had much more early interest displayed than BENUM. Should I consider the "enum" space a dead end - "abandon all hope ye who enter here"? Am I wasting everyone's time? My theory is that BENUM has greater potential for widespread end-user acceptance and actual use (despite less portability) because of its enum-like notation, and that that makes BENUM worth pursuing. Hey Stepjan, I'm developing a new component, a multichain, which should be able to chain different components together. Well the fusion and mpl libraries are somewhat new to me, but here ist my approach. I have some problems: When the MultiChain Component is constructed, nothing seems to get constructed, nor connected. Not even the constructors are being called? I really don't have insight, how you relay the signals to chain and from the cahin to the next component. I just copied it from chain.hpp. So i can not connect my multichain at the moment. Question: How to implement a reader-writer lock with quick response to writer? I am using boost1.35.0.( I know 1.36.0 is available, but I failed to build regex in 1.36.0 with VC8. Have you also met this problem in your environment?) I have the following requirements: 1.There are several reader threads and a single writer thread. The writer thread will update shared data periodically. And reader threads may read shared data at any time. 2.As long as writer thread try to update data, all reader thread should be blocked as soon as possible. 3.And reader thread should be blocked during data updating. 4.But reader threads can't be interrupted when they are reading. (i.e. all upcoming reader threads should be blocked, but writer still need wait till the last reader thread in reading finished.) How to implement above scenario with quick response to writer thread? Is there a parameter to build without compiler version info in the target library name?

By default, the compiled library have a name like: libboost_thread-gcc41-mt.a but I don't want the gcc41 information in the name as I may need modify my makefile to switch to another environment with gcc4.3. So is there a parameter in bjam to suppress the compiler version info in target library name? Or how will you solve this kind of problem?

<boost/numeric/ublas/matrix.hpp> includes <iostream>. Is it better not to do so?

Hi, It seems that <boost/numeric/ublas/matrix.hpp> includes <iostream>. I remember that it is better not to include <iostream> but something like <ostream> and <istream>, or even simply <iosfwd>. Hi, I made a small utility package that solves quartic, cubic and quadratic equations analytically. It give the multiplicity of the roots and tells whether the roots are zero, no-zero real or non real. I think it is appropriate to submit the package to boost. The SIGCHLD case (line 404 to 437) in file boost/test/impl/execution_monitor.ipp confuses the pid and uid (see http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_36_0/boost/test/impl/execution_monitor.ipp for a quick check). Is this the right place to report the bug? Boris

This file has not been updated since 08/12/07: http://tinyurl.com/48p38y which suggests it contains the expected results for Boost 1.34.1. So, Boost 1.36 tests are and 1.37 tests will be comparing against an outdated file (each version should compare against the former). When compiling Boost with address-model=64, some libraries issue msvc-warning BOOST_ROOT\boost/config/abi_prefix.hpp(19) : warning C4103: 'BOOST_ROOT\boost\config\abi_prefix.hpp' : alignment changed after including header, may be due to missing #pragma pack(pop) See msvc_9_4103.txt for a full dump using bjam -a -q address-mode=64 -WX Those libraries are: - system - filesystem - serialization - wave Please find the necessary patches attached. Additionaly, I've added _SCL_SECURE_NO_WARNINGS to serialization and changed wave to always set _SCL_SECURE_NO_DEPRECATE and _CRT_SECURE_NO_DEPRECATE regardless of the compiler version. Unused Parameter Warnings

I'm trying to silence a lot of unused parameter warnings in the boost 1.36 libraries I'm using. I'd like to submit these as patches so I don't have to fix them again (I've had to do it for 1.34 and 1.35). Is there a preferred boost wide solution to silencing these warnings? Should I consult each library author on their preference? AFAIK there are 4 common ways to silence these warnings. * Compiler specific pragmas * Pass by const reference to an empty inline template function * Cast to void * Delete the parameter name * C-style comment out the parameter name -- Michael Marcin

Hi, I have do a comparaison of the three thread management strategies fixed, lazy and adaptive header files and I found some incoherences that are possible bugs. * In fixed.hpp and lazy.hpp the size_ function should be const std::size_t size_() { return worker_.size(); } * In lazy.hpp submit_ is not used channel_iterator submit_( channel_item const& itm) { return channel_.put( itm); } * In adaptive and lazy add the assertion on constructor BOOST_ASSERT( lwm <= hwm); * In adaptive void core_size( std::size_t size) { shared_lock< shared_mutex > lk( mtx_worker_); core_size_ = size; } must use a unique_lock instead of a shared_lock * In lazy std::size_t max_size() { return max_size_; } should't have a shared_lock guard. The three files have more in common than differences. Hi, I'm reading the documentation and I don't find any description of the concepts Strategy, Channel, QueueingPolicy, Callable. Do you plan to describe explicitly these concepts in the documentation ? What do you think about adding a Worker concept, and adding it as parameter to the Strategy template class? I think that the tutorial must be reworked, including more practical examples, and starting from the most basic use and going on each one of the use cases where the different features are better adapted, currently it seams more to a informal reference manual. Some naming suggestions: * ThreadManagementStrategy sould be a better name for Strategy. * As QueueingPolicy can be either fifo or lifo, SchedulingPolicy sould be more apropiated. * Pending tasks can be more adecuated than queued tasks. You can use take instead of dequeue which is more general. Could you give a use case for lifo order? What about a manual thread management strategy, allowing the user to add new workers or interrupting them? A copy/paste: In the fixed example there is a reference to tp::channel which should be tp::bounded_channel. In the lazy example // creates a lazy pool with unbounded channel // tasks are processed in FIFO order // the pool contains ten worker threads // no worker threads are started at construction boost::tp::pool< boost::tp::lazy< depend_on_core >, boost::tp::unbounded_channel< boost::tp::fifo > > pool( boost::tp::core_poolsize( 5) boost::tp::max_poolsize( 10) ); Can this pool have more than 5 worker threads? If the worker threads are created "if current poolsize size is less than core_poolsize or the channel is full", as the channel is unbounded_channel the channel will never be full, so when the current poolsize size will be 5 no new threads will be created, ins't it? the adaptive ThreadManagementStrategy seems to be in contradiction to the goal of the threadpool "Using a thread pool over creating a new thread for each task may result in better performance and better system stability because the overhead for thread creation and destruction is negated." Could you present a use case in which this adaptive strategy could be useful? In channnel section you say "If the channel becomes empty all worker threads are set to sleep until a new task is enqueued." Except for the adaptive strategy which has a keep_alive timeout, the other waits until a new task is submited, isn't it? Which are the advantages/liabilities of a bounded channel respect to an unbounded one? When it is better to use one of them? It will be great to have an example justifying the need for the rendezvous channel. [intrusive] making a list safe for concurrent readers

I have a program that protects an object containing a linked with what is essentially a shared_mutex. I'd like to take advantage of the logical constness of traversing a linked list with const iterators and allow concurrent traversal protected by the external shared_mutex. Unfortunately the standard makes no such guarantees on std::list so I've determined I'll have to write my own linked list with a slightly stronger guarantee that concurrent read access is safe. I remember reading during the review that intrusive could be used to make high quality non-intrusive data structures easily. Can I use intrusive to make a std::list like container that is safe to read concurrently? Thanks, Michael Marcin

I'd like to merge Proto from trunk to release. The API is stable, the tests are now passing on most toolsets (though it's hard to see from the test results at the moment because of a Boost.Test bug), and much of the review feedback about the docs has been accommodated.
