Arguing about names in Boost libraries

What is wrong with the people commenting on libraries for Boost who are so concerned about the names being used ? We are talking only about C++ identifiers and yet there are now endless discussions where people disagree on names or argue that some name is not what they want or that they like some other name, with a list of names that they find adequate. This is irrelevant. There is something mentally wrong about all those peoples spending endless amounts of time around this issue. I notice this does not happen nowadays for just one library but for ever single library, or proposed library, which is mentioned on this mailing list. Is this the way all of you people actually work in your daily jobs, or on your own projects, spending hours and days arguing with others about C++ identifiers for every little thing ? Are you not aware of the absurdity of your endless remarks ? Grow up ! Surely there are better things to do than carry on endlessly about some name, that is should be x or y or z or some other inane preferable list. It's time for somebody to say this, so I will do it. A C++ identifier name, as long as it is vaguely about what the functionality entails, is perfectly adequate. It does not have to satisfy everyone in the universe. Period !

Why no non-null smart pointers?

I just created a very small smart pointer libary for our project. It will contain two types of shared pointers: SharedHandle and NullableSharedHandle. SharedHandle will be a shared pointer that cannot be null by ensuring a non-null construction while NullableSharedHandle will basically be a typedef for boost::shared_ptr. I firmly believe that code can be made more reliable by minimizing the use of nullable pointers. To this end, I think it is important that we start using non-null pointer types. Ideally the compiler would be able to understand a non-null pointer and catch bugs at compile time, but I think we can still improve things with a few runtime checks. If we make sure that a shared pointer is constructed with a non-null pointer and ban any reset() type methods, we guarentee that it points to something. This can be beneficial for the following reasons: 1. Any function that uses this type will no longer be burdened with precondition checks to make sure variables of this type are not null. 2. It's type is simply more explicit and better explains its function. 3. Moving the non-null check to the creation phase will reduce the possibility of encountering null pointer exceptions at runtime (assuming there are many more pointer references than constructor calls). So my little pointer library seems to make a lot of sense, but if so why hasn't this simple smart pointer variation made it into boost yet? Has this been discussed somewhere already? My search on non-null smart pointers is not revealing much discussion on the topic. Regards, Ross

[asio] Randomly having problems reading from the socket

Hi all, I have some problems using the boost.asio.read for a TCP-socket. So far it works fine, but it randomly stops the transfer for at least 5 seconds. To resolve the error I used a simple synchronous server and client from the boost examples and modified it too send a larger amount of data. (307400 Bytes; this size comes from the program I'm trying to get run). On the client side I also changed the reading from the socket to read the complete data with boost.asio.read and transfer_all as argument. Both, server and client, measure the time for sending and reading to the socket and will give an error if it needs more than 1 second. De Bruijn Bind (alternate bind syntax) Interest?

Hello all, I've been working on an alternate bind syntax based on De Bruijn indices[1]. The syntax is very simple, yet the terms are very powerful. Here is an example of a function const that takes in an argument c and returns another function that, for all input, returns c: //λx.λy.x = λλ1 with De Bruijn indices. auto const_ = abs<1>( abs<1>( var<1,0>() ) ); More examples, further explanation, and an implementation are available here[2]. I'm thinking that this library could also be useful as a core for more syntax heavy bind variations. It seems there is a patch somewhere for this problem (referred to in http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2009/04/47015.php) but it appears it never made it into the source. I've worked with the MSVC, Sun and GCC compilers. Each one of them supports #pragma once. Is there any reason to wrap this pragma within #ifdefs? Hi, is there already a macro in Boost.Config that allows you to insert the "template" keyword in the following code for those compilers that require it? struct functor{ template<class T> void operator()(); }; template<class F> void g(F f){ f.template operator()<int>(); //(1) works with GCC and comeau f.operator()<int>(); //(2) works with MSVC } this apparently only applies to operator calls. MSVC accepts both (1) and (2) for regular functions. (instantiating the operator template with an object of type T as argument, like mpl::for_each does, is not an option. On Windows 7, when I try to do bootstrap on a freshly unzipped boost 1.49 at the root directory, I get the following output: Building Boost.Build engine But that is as far as it gets before os terminates whatever it is doing with this (roughly translated from russian): **** STACK SIZE EXCEEDED **** **** WHILE PERFORMING RECURSION IN BATCH MODE **** Recursion depth=654, Stack usage=90 percent. **** BATCH PROCESSING ABORTED **** Is there a way to build boost bypassing this?

[Locale] VC11 Regressions

I am currently porting some code to the VC11 compiler beta, and as part of that process I ran the unit tests on the libraries I use and noticed some failures in Boost.Locale under VC11 that are not present under VC10. Ones of the tests (test_winapi_collate) actually crashes (showing the WER dialog etc). Hi all, I'm interested in getting boost::shared_ptr to use atomic ops on Solaris. I notice there is an implementation using the OS-provided atomics in boost/detail/sp_counted_base_solaris.hpp, but it doesn't seem to be included. According to this thread: http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2006/07/107144.php, it seems the reason might be that it wasn't possible to come up with a proper preprocessor condition to include it on the right versions of Solaris. I'm considering modifying my boost installation to include this header on Solaris - does anyone know of any issues with the code, or can they confirm that it has been well tested? Hi all, I'm attempting to adapt a third-party struct into a fusion sequence using BOOST_FUSION_ADAPT_ADT to get access to a nice operator<. Unfortunately compilation fails and I'm not sure if it's a bug or me using the library incorrectly. As best I can read the error message, it looks like the code is attempting to compare adt_attribute_proxy structs instead of the values represented by these. I can eliminate a large number of extra parenthesis based on a few pp tricks I've learned in processing Boost.Local's `const bind(type)& var`. Plus, I can provide (optional) support for variadics macros so to use comma-separated pp tuplets instead of parenthesized pp sequences on preprocessors with variadics. Review request: extended complex number library

Dear all, Following the comments from V. Escriba, I formally propose my complex number library for review. The library is an extension of the std::complex class addressing two issues: - The standard does not guaranty the behaviour of the complex class if instantiated with types other than float/double/long double. - Some calculation where pure imaginary numbers (i.e. multiples of sqrt(-1)) appear are unnecessarily slowed down due to the lack of support for these numbers. The code I submit contains two interleaved classes boost::complex and boost::imaginary which can be instantiated with any type T provided T overloads the usual arithmetic operators and some basic (real) mathematical functions depending on which complex function will be used. It is thus an extended version of Thorsten Ottosen's n1869 proposal (http://www.open-std.org/JTC1/SC22/WG21/docs/papers/2005/n1869.html) Performance tests show some non-negligible speed-ups compared to std::complex for calculations where pure imaginary numbers are involved. A speed-up of 25% has been observed when solving the Schroedinger equation explicitly on a regular mesh and some comparable figures can be observed when computing the Mandelbrot set (the two examples snippets provided in the archive). Furthermore, the functions (sin(), exp(), log(),...) involving boost::imaginary numbers are more precise than their equivalent using a std::complex with the real part set to 0. Hi all, I am proposing adding spacial containers for efficiently storing and accessing data of a spacial nature in fixed size trees. n-tree data structures would be useful where data relates to a 1D, 2D or 3D location, providing n-array searching of an n-array volume. N-tree data structures are commonly used in 3d applications, and are rarely particularly specialized. Their use is fundamental however they are frequently written by application programmers, due to a lack of free open source implementations (to the limit of my research). Their sophistication, like any container, is slim but easy to get wrong and beyond the ability and time contraints that should be assumed of the application programmer. It is a flexible and standard enough concept that a single implementation can be expected to meet a majority of requirements. I think there is the opportunity to create a solid implementation of templated n-tree pointer containers. The ntree container would be a tree representing an narray of elements with all dimensions being the same and being a power of two. The tree is memory efficient where areas within the volume are not occupied, and so "branches" and "leaves" are not created. The tree is well suited to geometrical operations such as ray picking or plane culling of the volume. An n-tree structure could be used in the place of any sparely populated n dimensional array where memory saving is the objective. The existing libraries I have found are licensed under GNU licenses. A ntree container should implement: get reset overloaded (array style) operators Optional implementations: views - a subset object representing an area or volume within the tree for accelerated access to a group of leaves that are positioned near to each other raycasting plane culling (getting leaves within a set of planes) etc. Is there interest in such a library? [result_of] Make `cpp0x_result_of_impl` public

There are two implementations of boost::result_of: a TR1-style implementation and a decltype-based implementation. While the TR1-style implementation has a public interface `boost::tr1_result_of`, decltype-based one doesn't have a public interface. By defining BOOST_RESULT_OF_USE_DECLTYPE, boost::result_of use decltype-based implementation. But this is not always a viable solution, since this breaks some Boost libraries. So how about adding `boost::cxx11_result_of` as public interface of the decltype-based implementation? Attached a patch to add `boost::cxx11_result_of`. (This patch also changes the name of `cpp0x_result_of_impl` to `cxx11_result_of_impl` to reflect the recent discussion on the cpp/cxx naming.) P.S. Is it worth trying to use this `boost::cxx11_result_of` in `boost::transform_iterator` code on trunk? Regards, Michel

In the review of lockfree it has been suggested that tagged_ptr should make it into the public API of lockfree. Wouldn't it make sense to move it into a separate library entirely? It would possibly get more exposure and cross-platform ports. The technique itself also requires some extra documentation. And it might find it's way into a release earlier than lock-free itself. [scope_exit] trunk tests fail on sun compiler

Hello all, I'm trying to get ScopeExit to work on Sun. 1) First it looked like all tests fail on this compiler: http://www.boost.org/development/tests/trunk/developer/scope_exit.html 2) However, I installed Solaris Studio 12.3 on my Ubuntu 10 and it seems that I can compile ScopeExit just fine with the following" $ CC -I /usr/include/i386-linux-gnu/ -I ../../.. -DBOOST_TYPEOF_EMULATION world_seq.cpp Note that: a) Sun does not support variadic macros so only ScopeExit sequence syntax will work. b) Sun does not support native type-of so BOOST_TYPEOF_EMULATION needs to be defined. Therefore, all original ScopeExit type-of emulation tests named `emulation_...` should compile (because they use the sequence syntax and define BOOST_TYPEOF_EMULATION). However, they fail... why? 3) Why when I click on the "fail" link for these tests I get no information on the Sun compiler's output? Git has a competitor called Mercurial? If we're moving to a Distributed-VCS, should we go to Mercurial instead of Git? They're kind-of like CVS vs. Subversion, except I think they came up in parallel. (While Subversion was designed as an updated CVS.) I think Git was made up of a bunch of script hacks, while Mercurial was a regimented single program. I don't have a preference, but I want to make sure we consider the rival options. Daryle W.

[result_of] Test fails on clang trunk and gcc-4.7 due to changes in FDIS

In the code below, const int f(); decltype(f()) i = 0; `i` has type `int` (not `const int`) in C++11. This is because `f()` is a prvalue of a non-class type (i.e. `const int`) and so its cv qualifiers are ignored. C++0x drafts (before FDIS) had a special rule for function calls in decltype: if e is a function call or an invocation of an overloaded operator (parentheses around e are ignored), decltype(e) is the return type of the statically chosen function; but this was removed in FDIS. Clang-3.1 (which will be clang-3.1) and gcc-4.7 seem to have implemented this change, and this change breaks the test case (libs/utility/test/result_of_test.cpp) on those compilers in a C++11 mode. [guideline] 31 character filenames?

Our current guidelines[1] say filenames should not exceed 31 characters. This was recently brought to my attention by a bug[2] from someone who actually cares because he uses the ODS-2 filesystem on OpenVMS. On a lark, I hacked the inspect tool to check for too-long filenames and lo! found a bazillion. Most (but not all) violations are from doc files auto-generated by doxygen and docbook, but which nevertheless go out with the boost distribution and so should conform. (Right?) So, should we care? Considering that we have little control(?) over how doxygen and docbook generate their files? I have fixed the bug in question, but it feels like a token effort. Should we just drop support for niche filesystems like ODS-2, and close all future bugs "won't fix"? Hello all, In the _many_ Contract Programming references that I have read (including N1962): http://contractpp.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/contractpp/trunk/doc/html/cont… I didn't find anything special about contracts for nested classes. I think that is because nested classes are executed at run-time "orthogonally" with respect to their enclosing classes. In other words, nesting a class only nests it's name (and changes some visibility rules) but it does not effect the run-time execution of the class and therefore it does not affect the contracts checked for the nested class. Hello there, i am new here and i just want to say "hi". so, i'm using boost almost a year now, usually i just used the array component. latley i wanted to implement the circular_buffer. i've defined it in a class after the private-modifier like this: boost::circular_buffer<std::string> textBuffer(10); (as take from the documentation) but my compiler on minGW will throw an error. so, i guess i got something wrong in declaring a string-textbuffer with the lenght of 10?! in the boost-docs there is following example: boost::circular_buffer<int> cb(3); help is appreciated, best would be a working example and a little hint which information is may have missed. greetings tony

DCVS vs CVS: call for constructivism

Hello, I think we all know understood that there are people from both camps, some with emotional arguments, some with constructive arguments, but it's not really moving anywhere. We need to start listing what would have to be done and once we have such a map see if it's worth it before discussing pointless things. Just so we can redirect people saying things like "Nobody told me a real advantage yet" to this post, here's a recapitulation of what I think the advantages/disadvantages of a DCVS is ( http://www.ericsink.com/vcbe/html/dvcs_advantages.html, http://www.ericsink.com/vcbe/html/dvcs_weaknesses.html) Pro: - Offline work (you can use diffs, you can commit) - Speed of operations compared to svn - No need to setup a server to work locally (encourages participation (focus on working first, then sharing later)) Cons: - Cannot check out subpaths - Cannot lock files - Would require people to change their habits and learn new tools I think most people in the svn-camp will tell that with the 1.8 checkpoints feature you can now also commit while offline and thus the only advantages for DCVS seems to be speed and the ability to check all the data while offline. I think the people that are opposed to the change unfortunately won't be convinced by those arguments, even tho pretty much every who switched to DCVS will tell you that the advantages are worth it and it's more than simply speed or freedom, it's a philosophy etc. So I think the best thing to do now is first to make a map of what would have to be done if we decided to switch, to see if it's an option at all. Here's a simple draft, please participate into making it better: - Import current history - Migrate the existing hooks - Migrate the existing scripts around. - Migrate the test runners - Trac / Website integration (redmine with git extensions?) - Rights management (gitolite?) - Update release procedures Maybe we'd start a page on the wiki, but the idea is to find out if there are more steps to be done and if there's any showstopper in those steps. I think the best solution would be to offer the repository with several protocols, namely git/hg/svn so everyone could use the tool they want (e.g github offers svn/git, I know other hosts do it too). Boost Fusion suggestion

I am not actually a Boost developer, but have the following suggestion regarding boost.fusion: I find the macro BOOST_FUSION_DEFINE_STRUCT potentially very useful, but it does not provide means to influence the initialization list of the default constructor. Alternatively, means to emulate c++11 default initialization (the struct Foo {int x=10;} syntax) could be emulated. Such feature would be very useful, as it would minimize repetition and make it easier to ensure that uninitialized variables are nowhere used. I already generate my structs from BOOST_PP sequences in a similar way to BOOST_FUSION_DEFINE_STRUCT to avoid having to write json serialization boilerplate, but a variant of BOOST_FUSION_DEFINE_STRUCT i am suggesting would make this task even simpler. Hello all, I spent some time trying to make overloaded_function support polymorphic functions but I had little success :( 1) I was able to do this (see code below): overloaded_function< void (int) , functor<poly, void (generic)> > o(f, p); o(321); o(3.21); o("cba"); But I don't like it because I explicitly have to pass the functor type poly. I wanted instead to only use generic to tag the template parameters in the signature: overloaded_function< void (int) , void (generic) > o(f, p); o(321); o(3.21); o("cba"); I'd consider this acceptable but I wasn't able to program this because I loose p's type (poly) in base so base cannot hold a reference to the functor p... Is there a way around this? (Some type-erasure magic maybe??) 2) I don't think this can work with function templates because in order to get a pointer to a function template you have to instantiate it: g<char*> Now I can get the function pointer but it's not polymorphic anymore... 3) I don't think there is any way to implement make_overloaded_function with polymorphic types because I can't re-construct the function signature from the functor given that its operator contains template parameters... I have no idea on how to work around this... If you have suggestions for 1, 2, or 3), they are welcome. Otherwise, it seems that supporting polymorphic functions in overloaded_function is not really feasible... [git] What's the IDE picture like?

All this talk about switching to git brings up one important question for me, and I suspect others.. Given all the various git-flow, git-this, git-that, git-whatever, tools that are getting mentioned.. What is the process for a user that wants to do their development, including version control, like? Specifically what does an: * Eclipse user do? * Xcode user do? * VIsualStudio user do? I ask because I'm really tired of learning yet more command lines tools at this stage in my life. And even though all GUI tools have drawbacks they do have the advantage that they condense the workflow usages to something understandable. And I would be really hard pressed to use any new version control system that I can't use a GUI. Hi Ion, With the current emulation of move semantics of Boost.Thread using Boost.move, I have a case that I would like to make working in a portable way boost::thread t = boost::thread( MoveOnly()); The library declares the template move constructor from a movable callable as as follows template <class F> explicit thread(boost::rv<F>& f); and MoveOnly is declared as defined below. The problem is a know limitation as the compiler is unable to deduce F as been MoveOnly even if MoveOnly is convertible to boost::rv<MoveOnly>& Jeffrey Lee Hellrung, Jr. made a proposal to try to solve the issue, but his proposal has a performance penality. Here it is a less elegant but efficient enough alternative. The addition of a explicit move conversion as ::boost::rv<MoveOnly>& move() { return *static_cast< ::boost::rv<MoveOnly>* >(this); } allows to the following to work as expected boost::thread t = boost::thread( MoveOnly().move()); While this workaround works when we are using the emulation it doesn't works when rvalue references are supported. I have defined a macro BOOST_EXPLICIT_MOVE that allows to write portable code #if ! defined BOOST_NO_RVALUE_REFERENCES #define BOOST_MOVE(RVALUE) RVALUE #else #define BOOST_MOVE(RVALUE) RVALUE.move() #endif that can be used as boost::thread t = boost::thread( BOOST_MOVE(MoveOnly())); The move() function is not really needed as the macro can hide the needed conversion, but could be preferred by users that don't need to make portable programs. The evident liability is of course the use of the macro. Is there something wrong on this design, something to to improve? Hi, In an earlier thread I mentioned that I am using quickbook to write software design specification/documentation. The whole document grows nicely now. Since more people are contributing, I added howto chapters to the end of the document, including some kind of guided quickbook skeleton for new chapters and the quickbook documentation itself. Using C++11 lambdas to replace Phoenix in MPL expressions

I use Phoenix to essentially turn code into types which can then be manipulated through MPL. I mostly use this to conditionally select algorithms or to include/exclude code at compile time, based on some logic written with MPL. I was interested in writing the code fragments using the new C++11 lambda expressions as it gives a more natural way to write code. While you can get the type of a lambda expression with decltype, the problem I've run into is instantiating the resultant type in order to actually get the function to execute. Lambdas have no default constructor, which makes sense, as there would be no way to deal with the capture variables. So I'm wondering if anybody can shed some light on manually instantiating lambdas. I would think there is a way (possibly shady) to do this, at least for lambdas with no capture. Then passing around lambda types as template parameters would be useful, which I think would lead to many interesting results. I only get the digest, so it I would appreciate it if you CC me on any response. Thanks- Augustus

I don't know if you quite grasp how complicated it is. I've been doing it for years. Getting the history preserved correctly is not trivial. #2 has almost no support in SVN. Now that SVN has merge tracking it is marginally better but there are problems with this model. Foremost, the branch has to be in a centralized repository and everyone owkring on the project has to deal with it in some fashion. It's not private in any sense of the word. You can't work on it if you don't have 'net access. You can't back out changes that you realized later were bad and ensure no one else ever sees those changes. The difference with a DVCS is both #1 and #2 are natively supported in the tool. There is no difference between a private local branch, a remote branch in a _de_facto_ central repository and a remote branch in some other random repository. They all look and act the same. I admit it is a tough concept to grasp for someone not used to it. It took me some time to grok it. But now it is second-nature to me and there's no way I'm going back. -Dave

It's not an automatic process, but once the initial effort is spent, it works beautifully. I should point out that I use both C++11 and libc++, and I ended up making a number of changes to boost build files to get various features working. The biggest problem is the lack of support in tools/build/v2/tools/clang-darwin.jam for specifying the SDK/platform for cross-compiling. My solution since boost 1.47 has been to replace it with a modified copy of tools/build/v2/tools/darwin.jam; if I thought this was going to be an issue for anywhere near as long as it has, I would've sent in a patch half a year ago (aside: do any of the maintainers actually use boost on OS X?). An additional complication is that as of Xcode 4.3, variant toolchains are stored in a different location and use a slightly different directory structure; a nice solution would be to support a build feature to indicate this and respond accordingly; I just hardcode for Xcode 4.3+. I'm happy to send you diffs off-list if you're interested, but it's frankenhacks all the way down until I get around to making a clean patch file for clang-darwin.jam. Steve P.S. The only source/header file with a problem is libs/signals/src/named_slot_map.cpp, which is trivially fixable.

What I'd like to do is: * create a branch, * switch to it, * delete the top level forwarding headers, * move the v3 headers up to boost/filesystem, * delete the v2 and v3 directories, * modify the headers as needed, * merge back to trunk. At the completion of the merge, the history for the boost/filesystem headers should include the full history of what were the boost/filesystem/v3 headers. I have a question for the git (or hg) people. Maybe the concrete situation will shed some light on some of the issues (or maybe I'll just get some help and stop pulling what's left of my hair out). I'm working on code.cpp and morecode.cpp. At the same time, I am writing scripts like review.sh (makes git work better with code collaborator) and, say, custom_make.bat. I am going back and forth on these as needed. In particular, as the cpp files get in shape I commit, and maybe post something for review. We leads me to change review.sh. Or as I get things working, I modify custom_build.bat. To me, once done, these are separate commits/branches/features/changelists (whatever you want to call them). But while working on them, I don't want to flip between branches - I find I'm always changing something in the wrong branch when I try separate branches. ie I change code.cpp while in the "scripts" branch. And it is often more than 2 things I am working on. And sometimes (not usually) they are at least somewhat related - ie code.cpp depends on yourstuff.h, and I need to make a small fix in yourstuff.h. In the end, that fix will be separate, but until i know it is correct, it tends to stay mixed with my other work. Now maybe the dependency case is different, I don't know. (obviously at the end of the day, the order of dependent changes needs to be pushed correctly). So basically, in something like perforce, I can group the files into changelists, and then forget about it until something is completely done and ready to commit. I understand I'm losing other features (small commits, being able to easily set it all aside, etc), but this is my common workflow. Should I do everything on a messy "work" branch and just sort it out when I am ready to push? Should I keep the features in separate branches, but pull from branch to branch all the time? (I don't think I want to spend that much time with the RCS. I like forgetting about it most of the time.) Am I just doing it wrong? (And did any of this make any sense?) Looking for some "real world" extended precision integer arithmetic tests

Folks, I'm continuing to add to the multiprecision arithmetic library in the sandbox (under "big_number"), and I've just added a Boost licensed fixed-precision integer type which on Win32 at least looks to be very competitive with GMP for reasonable numbers of bits (up to about 1024), see http://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/sandbox/big_number/libs/multiprecision/doc/h… However, as we all know there are lies damn lies and performance stats ;-) Plus the test results I have above ignore the effect of memory allocations (needed by libtommath and GMP, but not the fixed_int code - which in theory should make it faster still). So I'd be really interested to put the type through it's paces with some real world code that really thrashes an extended precision integer type. Any suggestions? Anything in Boost? [Context] Compile Broken for MSVC under x64 (r77477 Trunk)

r77477 has broken compilation of Boost.Context on trunk for me when using MSVC and targeting x64 (it spits out a "platform not supported" error). I believe this is because MSVC does not define any of the preprocessor directives that are being checked now (instead of _WIN64). [algorithm] aesthetic question about cxx11

Hello all, I have an aesthetic question. Boost.Algorithm puts C++11 algorithms like all_of into a directory boost/algorithm/cxx11. Would the directory name boost/algorithm/cpp11 be preferred? I think for file names .cpp and .hpp are Boost choice over .cxx and .hxx. But for directory names instead cxx11 is Boost choice over cpp11? Similarly, shall macros that refer to C++11 be named BOOST_..._CPP11_... or BOOST_..._CXX11_...? In general, shall Boost refer to C++11 as cpp11/CPP11 or cxx11/CXX11? Given that .cpp/.hpp is Boost choice for file names over .cxx/.hxx, I'd think cpp11/CPP11 would be Boost choice over cxx11/CXX11... P.S. I have a similar situation in Boost.Contract where I want to put macros to parse C++11 keywords (override, final, etc) in a separated directory and I want to name that directory cxx11 or cpp11 consistently with other Boost libraries (so users don't have to remember different conventions). I think Neil (the author of SourceTree) complained about the fact that he could not include compiled python file etc, in the app store version. Also a good GUI should have some command line drivers. Eg from the command line you should be able to enter "machg somerepo" and have it open in MacHg or something similar. (This has been on my to-do list for quite some time.) And such tools contravene the AppStore guidelines. Eg BBedit had to remove such tools from their application in order to get it onto the AppStore. Eg see http://www.barebones.com/store/macappstore.html and the section about the limitations of the AppStore version.)) I would think most developers would not be strictly limited to the AppStore version and a simple google of "OSX mercurial" will turn up MacHg... As to the whole discussion of Mercurial vs Git. I really have to say that both products are quite similar now in what they can do. However, the learning curve for me for git is just not good. Eg just for some simple comparisons do a: [salt:~] ⌘ hg help pull | wc 40 264 1753 [salt:~] ⌘ git help pull | wc 638 3624 29834 These are basically the same commands. Yet, the size of the help entry for pull for mercurial is 6% of the size of the git help entry. That says a lot about the understandability of one system to the other. (cf the size difference for other commands like pull, log, status, etc.) Git has **soo** many bells and whistles. Every so often as a real DVCS ninja git has something that mercurial doesn't have in my experience. Eg there is a feature in git when you are doing a total conversion of a repository you can run a filter over all of the files as you go. (eg imagine you want to convert all of say windows newlines to unix newlines in every version stored in history, or some other repetitive thing like this.) Up until a little while ago Mercurial didn't have that feature. So on the extreme cases there are definitely bits to git where git has more options. However these extra command switches in git are definitely a very sharp double edged sword in that for the average user the number of git options is just insanely huge. Thus I think the mercurial philosophy of trying to keep things clean, organized, and coherent is much better for at least 90% of users if not more like 98% of users. I am sure that each of you and each of your colleagues are gurus in a number of things, but do you want to require that they are gurus in DVCS systems? Even in Mercurial a lot of the users I encounter are sometimes woefully clued in to what is going on, and Mercurial is more streamlined, and cleanly organized than git (in my humble personal experience.) And it isn't all a bed of roses in Mercurial either. Eg there are things one should really watch out for, for example in using sub-repositories (these parallel sub-modules in git) one should use a thin super-repo layer. We got bitten by this at our work and it has caused problems. See eg http://mercurial.selenic.com/wiki/Subrepository#Recommendations Other points to consider: Those people who think you can't edit history in Mercurial or have many "branches" within a repo, their information is years out of date... I edit history and rebase, etc all of the time. It is part of my standard work flows. The arguments about popularity might have some weight but I think Mercurial and Git are definitely both large enough and will stick around. Besides converting one repo to the other in case one disappears is not that difficult. There are tools which interoperate between both formats (se hg-git.) Also, being a GUI writer I would say the number of differences once you are using a GUI is even smaller in day to day usage once you know what is going on. One, difference is with git you have to be careful to name *everything* or you get "detached heads". In mercurial you don't have to worry about this at all. You can happily update to any revision and start working right there without having to remember to name it / think up a name for it. (However, there are certain advantages to naming everything since then you can track revisions across all sorts of history edits, where-as in Mercurial you have to do some of this tracking manually...) (As a GUI writer I have thought about making the changes to MacHg to be able to release MacGit, but ever time I start playing with git it just... I don't know... I can go into details but the details would likely not be relevant here...) In any case, I use boost in my projects and think it's fantastic! Whether you all end up choosing git or hg a DVCS IMHO is much better than a centralized VCS. (However, I haven't used svn extensively since the company I worked for has skipped directly from cvs to mercurial & git.) Also whether you choose hg or git you might want to have an official mirror in the other system... So users can just use the system they want to. Best of luck, Jason

Please advise: Boost with LLVM Clang and 0x11 dialect ?

Can someone please advise on how to get Boost headers to work when compiling using Clang (as found on Apple OSX/iOS development) when the 0x11 dialect is enabled? We're stuck at Boost 1.47 because 1.48 doesn't even work with the current settings (C++03 dialect). The Mac developers don't want to fiddle with 1.49 without knowing what the deal is. Is there someone who has used Boost on the Apple with Clang who can relate some tales of how it works and offer suggestions? I've had no luck on the Boost.Users mailing list, or a previous post here on Boost.Devel. Is there anyplace else I might ask? At this point, any scrap of wisdom would be appreciated. —John

Graph properties and GraphML

I'm using 1.49.0 and am attempting to read a GraphML file that has graph attributes on it (example file below). My test program is below too. I've run into two issues. 1. The GraphML reader didn't quite handle them. There was some facilities put in place but it was never glued together. I added some code (patch below) and now it appears that that will do what I want... I'm getting "property not found" exception now. Great... onto item 2. 2. I cannot seem to wire the graph property into the dynamic properties. I've used the same syntax used for node and edge properties: props.property("gattr", get(&GraphProperty::gattr, g)); I've search examples and cannot find an instance of this to see if graph properties are handled differently. It's possible I've just written bad code for #2. I'm still working through the adjacency_list code to see if I can grok what's going on. Figured maybe someone more familiar with this could find the issue quickly. Once functionaly, I'll report a bug regarding item #1 but I want to ensure the writing of the GraphML works as well before doing that (the code appears to write graph attributes.. can't test yet due to item #2). [lambda] Can't get simple lambda working...

I'm attempting to call the version that accepts no parameters and returns a "char const*". I want to then compare this value to the local variable "filename". This should happen for each object in the vector (_1). I get various types of compiler errors on MSVC9. Are we still preparing for a release? If not (or afterwards), could someone check why the trunk's version of Boost.CRC, with more Boost.MPL usage, is choking on all versions of Visual C++. Only the latest version gives a specific error; previous versions just dump out. Daryle W.

"Not to 50!!!" - Princess Bride Things like mpl::vector and fusion::map have a configured limit like BOOST_MPL_LIMIT_VECTOR_SIZE. The documentation is dodgy and doesn't mention that while it is configurable you can't really configure it to be more than 50. This is a re-post of " [boost] BOOST_PP_ITERATE for huge mpl and fusion". I think problem may be that I didn't target a particular library because it happens in three. There is an undocumented hard-coded limit of 50 in MPL, Fusion, and Phoenix. I count two impls 1) has 20 elements all generated boost_1_49_0/boost/mpl/aux_/preprocessed/gcc/vector.hpp 2) stops at 50 boost_1_49_0/boost/mpl/vector/vector50.hpp I don't know if there's a way to generate more. Probably you need python. If that's the case, IMHO this should be documented so users can do it. This doesn't work: #define BOOST_MPL_CFG_NO_PREPROCESSED_HEADERS #define BOOST_MPL_LIMIT_VECTOR_SIZE 60 #include <boost/mpl/vector.hpp> boost_1_49_0/boost/mpl/vector.hpp:36:73: fatal error: boost/mpl/vector/vector60.hpp: No such file or directory Can someone please help. [xpressive] Does '_' match newlines?

I have the following static regex: sregex filename_re = icase("Content-Disposition:") >> -*_ >> "filename=" >> (s2=-+_) >> ';' ; I want the "*_" part to also match newline characters. I didn't see any flag to turn this on or off. Is this on by default? I see boost::xpressive::regex_constants::syntax_option_type::not_dot_newline, but not sure where you would (or wouldn't) specify this. I only recall the ability to specify flags for a regex when you compile a dynamic regex, not a static one. Help is appreciated! --------- Robert Dailey

new Overload library version

Hi everyone! I noticed that an overloaded function utility has appeared under boost/functional as a spin-off of Camiti's Boost.Local library. Indeed on 2007 I had begun implementing something similar. All started from a Joel de Guzman's post where he showed a proof of concept of a thin-wrapper of several Boost.Functions. See: http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2007/09/127906.php On that code base, I designed Overload, a small library whose interface matches as much as possible Boost.Function interface. Some documentation was written down thanks to the help and support of Dean M. Berris. Due to lack of time and the small amount of use cases I stopped spending my time on such a project. Anyway lately I have been working on the Overload library again. I have performed a light re-design of the interface, added a few new features and a lot of more testing, finally I've got to improve documentation. I uploaded the new version on the sandbox. AMDG When I try to run the tests for Boost.Thread or Boost.Chrono I get an error like: failed to write output file '..\bin.v2\libs\chrono\test\basic_stopwatch_reporter _laps_accumulator_set_pass_shared.test\msvc-10.0express\debug\asynch-exceptions- on\threading-multi\stopwatch\basic_stopwatch_reporter_laps_accumulator_set_pass. obj.rsp'! [format] Mistake in documentation

The current documentation ( http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_49_0/libs/format/doc/format.html) says: "In the Open-group specification, referring to the same argument several times (e.g. *"%1$d %1$d"*) has undefined behaviour." Perhaps it was right some time ago, but it's not longer true. The Open-group specification ( http://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/functions/fprintf.html) explicitly allows this: "In format strings containing the "%*n*$" form of conversion specification, numbered arguments in the argument list can be referenced from the format string as many times as required."
