Arguing about names in Boost libraries

What is wrong with the people commenting on libraries for Boost who are so concerned about the names being used ? We are talking only about C++ identifiers and yet there are now endless discussions where people disagree on names or argue that some name is not what they want or that they like some other name, with a list of names that they find adequate. This is irrelevant. There is something mentally wrong about all those peoples spending endless amounts of time around this issue. I notice this does not happen nowadays for just one library but for ever single library, or proposed library, which is mentioned on this mailing list. Is this the way all of you people actually work in your daily jobs, or on your own projects, spending hours and days arguing with others about C++ identifiers for every little thing ? Are you not aware of the absurdity of your endless remarks ? Grow up ! Surely there are better things to do than carry on endlessly about some name, that is should be x or y or z or some other inane preferable list. It's time for somebody to say this, so I will do it. A C++ identifier name, as long as it is vaguely about what the functionality entails, is perfectly adequate. It does not have to satisfy everyone in the universe. Period !

Why no non-null smart pointers?

I just created a very small smart pointer libary for our project. It will contain two types of shared pointers: SharedHandle and NullableSharedHandle. SharedHandle will be a shared pointer that cannot be null by ensuring a non-null construction while NullableSharedHandle will basically be a typedef for boost::shared_ptr. I firmly believe that code can be made more reliable by minimizing the use of nullable pointers. To this end, I think it is important that we start using non-null pointer types. Ideally the compiler would be able to understand a non-null pointer and catch bugs at compile time, but I think we can still improve things with a few runtime checks. If we make sure that a shared pointer is constructed with a non-null pointer and ban any reset() type methods, we guarentee that it points to something. This can be beneficial for the following reasons: 1. Any function that uses this type will no longer be burdened with precondition checks to make sure variables of this type are not null. 2. It's type is simply more explicit and better explains its function. 3. Moving the non-null check to the creation phase will reduce the possibility of encountering null pointer exceptions at runtime (assuming there are many more pointer references than constructor calls). So my little pointer library seems to make a lot of sense, but if so why hasn't this simple smart pointer variation made it into boost yet? Has this been discussed somewhere already? My search on non-null smart pointers is not revealing much discussion on the topic. Regards, Ross

[asio] Randomly having problems reading from the socket

Hi all, I have some problems using the boost.asio.read for a TCP-socket. So far it works fine, but it randomly stops the transfer for at least 5 seconds. To resolve the error I used a simple synchronous server and client from the boost examples and modified it too send a larger amount of data. (307400 Bytes; this size comes from the program I'm trying to get run). On the client side I also changed the reading from the socket to read the complete data with boost.asio.read and transfer_all as argument. Both, server and client, measure the time for sending and reading to the socket and will give an error if it needs more than 1 second. De Bruijn Bind (alternate bind syntax) Interest?

Hello all, I've been working on an alternate bind syntax based on De Bruijn indices[1]. The syntax is very simple, yet the terms are very powerful. Here is an example of a function const that takes in an argument c and returns another function that, for all input, returns c: //λx.λy.x = λλ1 with De Bruijn indices. auto const_ = abs<1>( abs<1>( var<1,0>() ) ); More examples, further explanation, and an implementation are available here[2]. I'm thinking that this library could also be useful as a core for more syntax heavy bind variations. From previous posts to this list and elsewhere, e.g. http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2009/04/46929.php, I see that the issue is caused by setting _pRawDllMain in tss_pe.cpp. Commenting this line does "solve" the problem, but I would rather not have to hack the Boost source code this way. It seems there is a patch somewhere for this problem (referred to in http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2009/04/47015.php) but it appears it never made it into the source. I've worked with the MSVC, Sun and GCC compilers. Each one of them supports #pragma once. Is there any reason to wrap this pragma within #ifdefs? Hi, is there already a macro in Boost.Config that allows you to insert the "template" keyword in the following code for those compilers that require it? struct functor{ template<class T> void operator()(); }; template<class F> void g(F f){ f.template operator()<int>(); //(1) works with GCC and comeau f.operator()<int>(); //(2) works with MSVC } this apparently only applies to operator calls. MSVC accepts both (1) and (2) for regular functions. (instantiating the operator template with an object of type T as argument, like mpl::for_each does, is not an option. Hi all, I'm interested in getting boost::shared_ptr to use atomic ops on Solaris. I notice there is an implementation using the OS-provided atomics in boost/detail/sp_counted_base_solaris.hpp, but it doesn't seem to be included. According to this thread: http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2006/07/107144.php, it seems the reason might be that it wasn't possible to come up with a proper preprocessor condition to include it on the right versions of Solaris. I'm considering modifying my boost installation to include this header on Solaris - does anyone know of any issues with the code, or can they confirm that it has been well tested? I can eliminate a large number of extra parenthesis based on a few pp tricks I've learned in processing Boost.Local's `const bind(type)& var`. Plus, I can provide (optional) support for variadics macros so to use comma-separated pp tuplets instead of parenthesized pp sequences on preprocessors with variadics. I've recently discovered (well, probably rediscovered) an alternate rvalue reference emulation, one which allows rvalues ***of any arbitrary (move-emulation-enabled) type*** to be captured in C++03 and identified as rvalues, rather than references-to-const (there is a drawback, though, which I'll get to below; as usual, there's no "free lunch"). This is in contrast to the current move emulation framework Ion has created in Boost.Move which, at best, allows you to capture rvalues of specific types. That is, if you can enumerate the types for which you want to enable rvalue capture, then you're good. For example, if you want to create a generic unary function some_fn, and you know you want to at least capture rvalues of type X, you could do: template< class T > void some_fn(T&); // captures (lvalue) references-to-non-const, explicitly created emulated rvalue references, *and* (lvalue) references-to-(X const) template< class T > typename boost::disable_if< boost::is_same<T,X> >::type void some_fn(T const &); // captures (lvalue) references-to-const *except* (lvalue) references-to-(X const) void some_fn(rv<X>&); // captures rvalues of X as emulated rvalue references However, if Y is any type other than X, the above overloads will capture an rvalue of Y as an (lvalue) reference-to-(Y const). This is one of the shortcomings of using the emulated rvalue reference rv<T>& as a function argument: it can't bind to rvalues in a context where the template parameter T is deduced. Now I don't know if the following proposition is a good idea or not, but I think it is worth considering. Again, we would like the emulated rvalue reference rv<T>& to bind to rvalues, but the problem is the deduction of the T template parameter. Instead of using rv<T>& to capture arbitrary rvalues, I'll use a kind of type-erased emulated rvalue reference, generic_rv<...> (for lack of a better name at the moment), which will just store a void pointer to the original, pre-type-erased object. Of course, we need some way to recover the object back from the void pointer, and that's what the "..." template parameters are for. This is where the (unfortunate) runtime overhead comes in, as some dispatching mechanism (e.g., function pointers) needs to be used to effect the recovery of the original, pre-type-erased object. The important difference between rv<T> and generic_rv<...> is that there's no T in the template parameter list "..." of generic_rv; more to the point, its template parameters are not deduced within the context of binding function arguments of some_fn, hence the compiler will be allowed to look for conversions from arbitrary rvalues to generic_rv<...>. Hopefully that gives enough of an introduction to the idea. Further details are probably best left to a code snippet. Comments? [interprocess] message_queue hangs when another process dies

Hi, I have found the following problem with message_queue on win32 (MSVC 2008 + Windows Vista). Suppose we have 2 processes, one sends messages to queue, another reads them. When reading process dies (for instance using End process) during message_queue.receive the another process hangs in send. As I found during investigation, it tries to lock interprocess mutex, but it is already locked by dead process. So this message queue instance becomes unusable. I attached the example. Steps to reproduce: 1) Start "mq.exe s" (i.e. with argument s) It outs: sender: $PID 2) Start mq.exe without arguments. It outs: receiver: $PID 0 1 2 3 4 This time sender outs: send done: 3) At this point the message queue is empty and receiver waits for messages. Build trunk 1.46 libraries problems

I've just updated trunk, and note that version.hpp has been updated to 1.46. Interest in simple unformatted binary stream I/O?

There have been many requests on Boost and various C++ newsgroups for unformatted binary I/O. For example, in 2003 Neal Becker wrote: I wonder if anyone has code for implementing unformatted I/O? What I have in mind is for the simple case where the application that reads data knows the data types, so this is not as complicated as the general marshalling situation. This proposal provides a very simple solution that works with standard library input and output streams. Hi, After experimenting with Spirit.Qi to make a JSON parser, I had the need for a serializer. First, I thought I could serialize my model of JSON (json:: value, json: object, etc.), but that was not compatible with boost::serialization. I am currently writing a ARCHIVE for Boost Serialization, but I'm finding some problems in order to implement JSON correctly. The question is, does anyone know about some files to Boost Serialization already finished? I've seen the Archive made by Esteve Fernandez, but do not serve my purpose, because I just need JSON. I would like to develop a JSON parser which in turn is a compatible Boost Serialization serializer . Any ideas? Thanks and regards, Fernando Pelliccioni.

Hi, I have started to play with a class to define opaque typedefs on funcdamental types. It is based on the C++ proposal " Progress toward Opaque Typedefs for C++0X" by Walter E. Brown http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2005/n1891.pdf and http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2004/n1706.pdf Please take a look on the preceding links to understand the motivation. Boost.Sericalization provide a BOOST_STRONG_TYPEDEF already, but in my opinon the implementation is not complete,as only the order operators are defined (But maybe I'm wrong). Evidently it can not provide everything we can have with a language approach, but IMO this could yet be useful. The library include two class templates (CRTP) to define opaque types: * public_opaque_type<OT,UT> : implicit conversion from OT to UT * private_opaque_type<OT,UT> : no conversion from OT to UT An opaque type (OT) is a new type, different from the underlying type (UT) and other OT. It defines explicit constructor from the UT, and defines all the operators the UT support but this time applied to the OT. In looking at implementing a portable home_directory_path function a few questions arise. Based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_directory, POSIX and other UNIX flavors 'appear' to be a straight forward use of the "HOME" environment variable. Does anyone have any experience where the "HOME" variable is not the proper source of the user's home directory? Windows NT and above have the "USERPROFILE" environment variable. Using this would be the easiest to use. But I've seen discussion that this may not always be properly defined, in particular if the user has reset their home directory to a non-system drive. I haven't tracked down it's availability on WinCE. Does anyone have experience with this platform? There is the windows GetUserProfileDirectory api function also available since NT4. This is in the Userenv.lib/dll, obviously adding a link dependancy. How are these sorts of system link dependencies handled? Through bjam? Or is it acceptable/better to use #pragma comment(lib,"Userenv.lib")? In looking at some client code using home_directory_path, I see that they generally are looking for the user's Desktop directory(Mac & Windows). Obviously this only makes sense on GUI platforms. The issue with merely getting this path via home_directory_path() / "Desktop" is IIRC, that at least on windows "Desktop" is localized and may not exist with that name on non-english localized systems. Windows has the SHGetFolderPath api. I need to look into Mac's native support. Any thoughts on the general usefulness of a portable desktop_directory_path? Thanks, Jeff

[unordered] equal_range is O(bucket_count()), not O(size())

TR1 specifies that unordered_multimap::equal_range(k) worst case complexity is O(size()). However, in practice, I find that the worst case performance of boost unordred_multimap's equal_range is O(bucket_count()). Is this known? I believe the issue is with the second iterator returned by equal_range(). Specifically, if there are sparse elements in the hash table, the implementation may have to traverse many buckets to find the second iterator. I have a test that demonstrates the issue. The test makes 2 runs over an unordered_multimap, each using the same number of elements. In the second run, it calls rehash() in order to grow the bucket count by a large amount. Notice that the first run is quite fast, while the second run takes more than 10 seconds. Here are the results from my test: ---- $ ./main rehash(0) insert 1000 elements built hash, with 1543 buckets and 1000 elements. Now, get some ranges time to obtain 1000 elements: 00:00:00.001366 rehash(5000000) insert 1000 elements built hash, with 6291469 buckets and 1000 elements. The library also provides an adaptor to make heaps mutable, allowing a programmer to modify a value and update its position within the heap. The library also also supports stability, ensuring that elements pushed into a heap with the same priority are popped in the same order. The library is not targeted in any specific domain nor directly related to any specific libraries, but intended to be a collection of general purpose data structures (not unlike the Boost.Unordered library). Because Vladimir Batov has expressed himself by saying that he does not want to continue to offer his Boost.Convert library as a library for Boost, I am respecting his decision and his library is NOT accepted into Boost. I am still going to reserve the right to do an analysis of the various viewpoints and offer some way forward for the Boost.Convert library, if Vladimir Batov wishes to pursue it, or for any other library which wishes to present a convert-like interface. I will post this analysis sometime later in the week. There is also still one person who had asked me personally to do a late review by the end of Wednesday, and if that person still wants to do so I would still appreciate his input. Hey everyone, I have recently run into a scenario where it was useful to have << and >> I/O operators defined for none_t. I was using Boost Program Options to create a list of program options, and I wanted one of my options to be a help message. Since this option has no value except for the side effect of printing a help message and exiting, I gave it the type none_t, i.e.: options.add_options() ( "help" ,opts::value<none_t>()->zero_tokens()->notifier(...function that prints help message...) ,"print help message and exit\n" ) When I did this, it complained that the >> operator was not defined for none_t, so I went ahead and defined my own I/O operators, which are essentially just no-ops: inline std::istream& operator>> (std::istream& in, boost::none_t& _) { return in; } inline std::ostream& operator<< (std::ostream& out, const boost::none_t& _) { return out; } It seems to me that these are the natural I/O operators to define for this type, and so it would be useful to have them be officially part of Boost. Although it is unlikely that a user would ever call them directly, their existence could prove useful in various circumstances where a generic I/O function is being applied to a none_t, such as the case I ran into/ If people were willing to accept a patch that adds these operators to Boost, then I would be willing to write such a patch. Obviously I would need to generalize the istream/ostream types to the full generic versions which include the template parameters for character traits, etc. I would also add forward declarations of istream and ostream just before these declarations so that the implementation would not need to have the <istream> and <ostream> headers as dependencies, though this would be tricky because I'd need to figure out how to detect if <istream> and/or <ostream> have not been included yet. Hi, I've written a small wrapper for std::map::find() (and map-like containers/ranges) that returns a pointer to the value if found (or NULL if not found). See https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/5227 The advantage is that you don't need the container type name (for ::reference), you can initialize the pointer inside an if condition, you don't have to compare against ::end() and you don't have to use ->second. For containers of pointers to objects, the wrapper could do an additional dereference. Do you think this would be useful for inclusion in Boost? Greetings, Olaf

Hi, I've tried to add a configuration point in Boost.Conversion via overloading and ADL, but while the internal call of the library can find them using a trick that adds a parameter that contains the type of the return type, the user is not able to find them without using the same this trick, but this is too dark to be natural for user code. Next follows a simplified code of the problem. [shared_ptr] Some design advice

Hi, I want to create some refcounted objects using shared_ptr. For example if I have class A_impl, I want my users only to use A. So, I created the following code: class A_impl { public: virtual ~A_impl () {}; void dosomething () {}; }; typedef shared_ptr <A_impl> A; The challenge is now that I want to provide some typedefs on A (which is a shared_ptr()). So that my users can use: A::my_value_type; I am aware of the reference_type, but I need to have some additonal typedefs and constants as part of A. I have started with a partial template specialization of shared_ptr, but I have my doubts whether this is the correct way. Another option would be to create our own shared_ptr that just embeds the boost_shared_ptr and exposes just some of its methods. Any specific ideas on this? Regards, Johnny

My real task is to check if the data in Windows clip-board is a column of data (copied from a grid or table). Such a column is just text separated with "\n\r" sequences. So, for example these are valid data: "12" - a column of height 1 with data "12", " a\n\r b" - a column of height 2 with two with data " a" and " b" "-1\n\r\n\r3" - a column of height 3 with datum "-1", empty cell, and datum "3". The spirit solution above will skip the empty cell in my third example. On the other hand, I do need the information about empty cells too. It really looks more like a tokenizing task. I bumped epsilon up to 3. I think this is somewhere between a 90 and 95% confidence interval. I adjusted the tests at 0.01 and 0.001 also. Once I got the test to pass with random_device consistently, it also passed with lagged_fibonacci607. (I'm not absolutely sure about the confidence intervals. I was estimating them using the binomial distribution, which is a poor approximation towards the edges). I'm pretty sure from this that the problem was that the probability that the test would pass with random values was too low, so the change in the seeding algorithm was enough to make it fail. The proposed solution is overcomplicated hard to read and in general makes more troubles then helps, makes the code less readable by average programmers. ------------------------------------ shared_ptr as pointer model is Wrong ------------------------------------ You almost never want to have shared object semantics for pimplized object. I use pimpl ideom widely in my projects CppCMS, CppDB and even in Boost.Locale and I used shared semantics only once where it was explicitly shared. In rest of the cases I had found myself using following smart pointers: 1. copy_ptr - pointer the copies underlying object on its copy. i.e. something like copy_ptr(copy_ptr const &other) : p_(new Object(*other)) {} Copy the object on copy. 2. clone_ptr - pointer that clones underlying object on its copy. i.e. something like copy_ptr(copy_ptr const &other) : p_(other->clone()) {} 3. hold_ptr - pointer with same const-semantics as an object it points to T const &operator*() const; T &operator*() ; T const *operator->() const; T *operator->() ; They cover almost all use cases, so with addon of shared_ptr it covers ALL use cases. In any case current boost::scoped_ptr or std::auto_ptr is much more suitable smart pointer for implementing pimpl then Boost.pimpl. The only advantage I can see in boost.pimpl over scoped_ptr or auto_ptr is that it does not require explicit destructor. i.e. class Foo : boost::noncopyable { public: Foo(); int x() const; void x(int v); private: struct data; std::auto_ptr<data> d; }; No good. You need to add ~Foo(); So it would know to destroy Foo::Data correctly. But this can be easily solved on hold_ptr, copy_ptr and clone_ptr level same as it solved for shared_ptr and in reality even this not needed as it is better to add empty destructor in cpp. Spare Pointer use case ------------------------ Another important use case in the case when pimpl is used to handle ABI stability and in general the object has spare "pimpl" or d-pointer for future uses. Consider: struct book { public: book(); book(book const &); ~book(book const &); book const &operator=(book const &); std::string title() const; std::string author() const; void title(std::string const &); void author(std::string const &); private: std::string author_; std::string title_; struct data; copy_ptr<data> d; }; Now in book.cpp we define data as struct book::data {}; And we do not initialize d at all. It is fast and efficient object that does not use data at all. Now when we decide to add new member "isbn" without breaking ABI. in book.cpp we define in book.cpp struct book::data { std::string isbn_; } And now we initialized the d pointer in constructor. And add new members in book.h std::string isbn() const void isbn(std::String const &); And implement them std::string book::isbn() const { return d->isbn_; } void isbn(std::string const &s) { d->isbn_ = s; } This is very important use case the the author does not even relate to. - What is your evaluation of the implementation? Generally not looked into too deeply but it is does not follow boost standards: - Naming conventions - Documentation - Build So it is not even ready for the review (even thou it can be easily changed as it is a small library) - What is your evaluation of the documentation? 1. The documentation should be in HTML file not on some Internet web site. 2. Rationale part missing The documentation in not Boost-Ready - What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library? Useless for 90% of pimpl use cases. - Did you try to use the library? With what compiler? Did you have any problems? No I hadn't - How much effort did you put into your evaluation? A glance? A quick reading? In-depth study? About 4-5 hours of studying - Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain? Yes, I work with pimpl-ized object on daily bases in many different approaches including implementing my own smart pointers for pimpl (clone_ptr, hold_ptr, copy_ptr) - ABI Stability - Compilation time reduction, - Decoupling of the interface from implementation details. Should The library be accepted in Boost: ======================================== No it should not. It is "a fancy" library that was written without a knowledge of the problem domain. It tries to solve problem in smart way making it overcomplicated. IMHO old std::auto_ptr is much more suitable for writing pimpl-objects then Boost.Pimple. For easy pimpl-ideom you do not need a fancy class but rather a set of pimpl-suitable smart pointers. Just a heads up, that the latest Boost.Config changes: * Remove the concept related macros. * Tighten up most of the C++0x related tests, with the result that some C++0x features that were previously enabled are no longer - this may also cause the Boost.Config tests to fail on some platforms. * Some C++0x features that were not previously enabled are now - because they were passing the Boost.Config tests - there's at least one case where this is causing regressions in other libraries - if any more pop up please let me know ASAP! Hello, I am a regular user of the boost test library, having used CPPunit before. I miss the following macro: BOOST_CHECK_DOUBLES_EQUAL(first, second, absolute_tolerance); which would check whether "std::fabs(first-second) <= absolute_tolerance" is true. It seems the boost test library does not support it, and instead forces/encourages users to use BOOST_CHECK_CLOSE(first, second, percent_relative_tolerance); The above macro does not really make sense in my application, I really need to check for absolute tolerances, irrespectively of the magnitude of the numbers. CPPunit has this feature as DOUBLES_EQUAL. Would you consider adding this? Thanks, Sebastian

boost.atomic and boost.lockfree backports

Hartmut and I have been using modified versions of Boost.Lockfree and Boost.Atomic in our codebase at work. I've put git repositories of our versions of both libraries up on github, so that the lockfree/atomic authors can integrate our bug fixes and/or feature extensions if they wish. The code is under the BSL. In addition to a number of bug fixes/tweaks, our variants contain the following enhancements: * boost.atomic: 128bit lockfree atomics for MSVC 2008+ (using _InterlockedCompareExchange128 and SSE2 intrinsics) and GCC-compatible POSIX compilers (using 16 byte __sync intrinsics). This code is x86-64 specific, and disabled by default. Define BOOST_ATOMIC_HAVE_SSE2 to enable in x86-64 MSVC 2008+ environments. Define BOOST_ATOMIC_HAVE_SSE2, BOOST_ATOMIC_HAVE_GNU_SYNC_16 and BOOST_ATOMIC_HAVE_GNU_ALIGNED_16 to enable for GCC-compatible compilers. The following command line flags are also needed for GCC-compatible compilers: -mcx16 (enables 16byte sync intrinsics) and -msse2. * boost.lockfree: A growable lockfree deque, based on algorithms by M. M. Michael. Backed by 128bit atomics. This is the first lockfree data structure I've written, so take it with a grain of salt. There's one bug that I'm aware of, unfortunately, it occurs infrequently so I haven't had much luck tracking it down. [profile_templates] template profiling on darwin

Hey Steven, Thanks for your help getting the template profiler working on darwin. I just had to make a couple more obvious config copy/pastes to get this working - my diffs are below. Also, it appears that the tool is broken for gcc < 4.3 - it looks like some changes were made halfway for template_profiler_test{_enter|_exit} but still some undefined references to template_profiler_test. I mucked about with this for a few minutes, then gave up and upgraded to gcc 4.5, updated my simlinks, and darwin configuration works ok now. Now I've got LOTS of data to wade through (65K template instantiations for a very small MSM test!) Hi Steve, Concepts are able to define default implementations if the type doesn't provides the specific signature. For example in 20.1.2 Comparisons the concept LessThanComparable defines a default for implementation for bool operator>(U const& a, T const& b) { return b < a; } bool operator<=(U const& a, T const& b) { return !(b < a); } bool operator>=(T const& a, U const& b) { return !(a < b); } In the definition of the concept less_than_comparable in Boost.Any, you define the implementation of these operators in function of operator<(), but if the types provide the specific signature the specific function is not called. I guess that the default implementation of for example operator<= should use operator< only if the the underlying types don't provide operator<=. What do you think?
