[multi_array] Bug in rbegin(), rend()?

I'm having some trouble iterating over a 2-dimensional multi_array in reverse order. I'm using boost 1.38 with gcc-4.2.4 and the following code won't compile with the error given below: #include <boost/multi_array.hpp> template< typename It > void iterate_over( It begin, It end ) { while( end != begin ) { begin->end() - begin->begin(); ++begin; } } void test() { boost::multi_array< double, 2 > m; iterate_over( m.begin(), m.end() ); // works fine iterate_over( m.rbegin(), m.rend() ); // causes error } This looks to me like a bug in the implementation of the reverse iterator for multi_array. XML character escaping

There is a function encode_char_entities() in boost/property_tree/detail/xml_parser_utils.hpp; is that safe to use from other Boost libraries? Boost.Graph's GraphML writer currently generates its own XML, and I just changed it to escape strings using that function. Should that be moved to someplace more public? -- Jeremiah Willcock

[BCP] Script for global renaming Boost Namespace

Hello, Today Boost does not provide any backward binary compatibility. This makes big problems in shipping 3rd part libraries that depend on Boost because library user must use the same version of Boost as that 3rd part library was compiled with. The problem is become even more critical for ELF platforms (UNIXes) where all symbols are exported by default. I had written a small Python script that switches boost namespace to other, allowing 3rd part project include it without collisions with primary Boost namespace. The script passes over the source tree of boost and changes each include path from <boost/foo/bar.hpp> too <newnamespace/foo/bar.hpp> and renames all macros and identifiers from some_BOOST_something to some_NEWNAMESPACE_something and some_boost_something to some_newnamespace_something. It does not touch comments (copyright) and strings unless the string is in form "boost/.*" which is usually some reference for include. I've run this script on the 1.39 version of boost and successfully build full boost release and run some of regression tests like Boost.Asio, Boost.Regex, Boost.Function and others, The source code is available at: http://art-blog.no-ip.info/files/rename.py You run it as: ./rename /path/to/boost/source new_namespace_name It renames all macros and namespaces to new namespace, and renames main include directory to new_namespace_na,e. Few points: 1. It is only alpha version script, I just want to see feedback and proposals 2. I do not update build scripts. I assume that each library that tryes to import its own version of Boost would provide its own build system. 3. The build scripts should be updated differently because they have different syntax and grammar. The required changes are to fix different build defines Please, give feedback proposal. If there someone who is familiar with Boost.Build systems can actually help, this would be very good. Today there is a big problem with working with different versions of Boost. It should be solved. I think this script may be a valuable addition to Boost.BCP utility that allows extracting a subset of boost for integration in 3rd part tools and libraries. Thanks, Artyom

boost interprocess linking error

I also got the https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/2992 bug. That's the one with the linking error caused by the functions get_file_name_from_handle_function and unlink_file. The functions are defined as static inline, they are however too big to be successfully inlined. One work around I found so far is to pass the /force:multiple switch to the linker. Far from being ideal as that may hide other linking issues. -- EA

As I mentioned before, if the interest exists, I will try to integrate and respect the design decisions that already made in the other versions... [property_tree] Files with tab and min/max issues

(reposting this because it was part of a previous thread that property_tree maintainers may not have been following) Is libs/property_tree/detail/pugxml.hpp third-party code? It has several min/max and tab issues, but I did not fix them because it appeared to be outside code that we should not change. Should I fix the issues anyway? Also, the following two files had tabs within test input strings. I do not know if they were intentional. If so, I should probably change them to \t, and if not, they should become spaces. [Math/Statistical Distributions] Rethinking of distribution template parameters.

Dear Boost developers, This is a feature request for the next version of Math/Statisical Distributions lib. Currently, due to lack of input type information, discrete distributions can only be "emulated" by using the discrete_quantile policy. However, doing so the effective quantile type is still a real type. In my opinion, this have at least two disadvantages: 1. Operations are slow since the underlying quantile type is still real. Instead, operations on really integral types are generally faster. 2. Quantile comparison might be inaccurate since we are comparing real types So, for improving the support of discrete distributions, I think it would be nice if the all probability distributions gain a third template parameter, named, for instance, InputType. Volunteering to fix tab and min/max issues

Since tabs in source files and min/max guideline violations are so easy to correct, is it OK if I just fix them in all libraries (except for the inspection tool's examples)? I will not do any that appear to be intentional or that would change the meaning of the code. Do I have permission to do that and just commit the changes? -- Jeremiah Willcock

how to build boost with bzip2 in non-standard location?

Hello, I want to build the full boost library, while I don't have bzip2 installed system-wide (but I just downloaded and installed it locally). It seems to me that http://www.boost.org/boost-build2/doc/html/bbv2/tasks/libraries.html should be relevant here for that task, but I find the descriptions too general to understand. I wonder whether somebody could simply tell me the lines to be entered into the bjam-configuration file? Perhaps bz2 : : <file> Path_to_libbz2.a ; But how to specify where to find bzlib.h ? Isn't it possible to specify the base directory, where then, as, usual include, lib and bin are found? Thanks in any case! Oliver

Question for C++ experts about exception allocation failure

How is failure to allocate an exception object handled in various compilers? 15.1.4 says that "the memory for the temporary copy of the exception being thrown is allocated in an unspecified way" but I don't think it specifies behavior for the case when the allocation fails. I know that some compilers allocate exceptions from the heap, so does this mean that an attempt to throw any exception could, in theory, result in a std::bad_alloc being thrown instead? As far as I can tell such behavior wouldn't violate the C++ standard, but I'm not sure my interpretation is correct. Anyone? [MPL] Is there an "include all" header?

I am looking for a "include all" header for Boost.MPL. Is there such? For the Boost.Preprocessor (having similar structure) there is <boost/preprocessor.hpp> however <boost/mpl.hpp> does not exist. Is it by purpose or just a forgotten feature? Actually I think having such "include all" headers is very convenient especially for larger libraries. (Yes, I know I can write such header by myself and then just use it every time I want to use Boost.MPL however having a "standard one" would be easier I think.) Adam Badura

One thing that http://www.boost.org/community/reviews.html#Review_Manager doesn't mention is how a prospective review manager should volunteer. When joining a thread, in case the thread has exited, I find it convenient to have any exception the thread function throws propagated to the caller of join(). Just as an illustration of what I'm talking about, below is my Win32 implementation of a similar interface. An interesting design decision is what to do if a detached thread throws an exception. Note the line marked with (1) -- I've decided to assert in this case (instead of ignoring the exception, which would be the alternative behavior.) git clone up

In case this reaches any other git enthusiasts, I've rigged up a git clone that is automatically tracking boost svn, here: http://sodium.resophonic.com/git/boost/ Click around on it... it's smoking fast, despite the fact that it is running on hardware I found in the trash on the end of a mediocre uplink. There is a little howto here: http://sodium.resophonic.com/git/boost/about/ The repository (minus checkout) is about 150M, it contains branches and tags going all the way back. It will take a while to do the initial clone but fetches after that are very fast. -t
