Hello I'm using date_time on a 32b Ubuntu machine (1.36, gcc 4.2.4). After a long time of documenting, polishing and testing I'm glad to announce that Boost.Log has reached the level where public review request can be submitted. The automatic tests aren't entirely complete, however, the basic functionality is covered and most of what is not covered has been tried by hand. Major changes since my last publicly announced version: * Substantial documentation improvement. * Added several Windows-specific sinks: Event Log (simplified and advanced), Windows debugger and experimental Event Trace for Windows Vista and later. * Loggers now consist of a number of independent features that can be composed the way the user needs. User-defined features can be developed and injected into the mix. * Attribute value extractors improved. With the new extract function attribute values can be extracted from the attribute values view by employing lambda functors. * Some files and classes were moved or renamed to improve code clarity and shorten names. * A number of bugs fixed. * Added tests. The archive with the library source code, tests and docs is available in the Vault: http://tinyurl.com/cm9lum The online docs are also available on the SourceForge page: http://boost-log.sourceforge.net The latest code snapshot can be downloaded from CVS on the SourceForge project page: http://sourceforge.net/projects/boost-log The code should be compatible with Boost 1.38. [Serialization] BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT regression on SunCC

>From version 1.34 to 1.35, the export of classes was modified so that all the archives did not need to be included before calls to BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT. I don't know why this was a problem to begin with. Anyway, this feature used to work on SunCC but with the new changes, there is a regression. This is caused by the dependence on ADL to instantiate the ptr_serialization_support members: SunCC just doesn't do it. So the instantiations never occur and you get an assertion failure when running the serialization tests under debug: Assertion failed: it != boost::serialization::singleton< oserializer_map<Archive> >::get_const_instance().end(), file vendor/boost_1_37_0/boost/archive/impl/archive_pointer_oseri\ alizer.ipp, line 64 I know how to fix it (instantiating manually for each Archive,Serializable pair, not a huge problem). I would suggest that Boost Serialization should have a fallback mechanism for these compilers. Perhaps along the lines of the old export functionality where the user would define the archives they are interested in. Thoughts?

Architecture Analysis of the boost libraries, e.g. spirit

Hi boost developers, I have a question regarding the architecture of boost libraries. First some (short) background info: I have done some architectural analysis in the past for C++, C and Java projects. It is a static toolbased analysis approach and essentially it enables you to compare the "should"-architecture with the "is"-architecture. Nearly all projects suffer from some architectural decay over time (e.g. unwanted dependencies etc.) So I was interested how well those tools for architectural analysis cope with C++ template code and boost is an ideal candidate. :-) I have already successfully analyzed the boost spirit library. The architecture for spirit is documented under http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_38_0/libs/spirit/classic/doc/organization.h… and if that is still the "should"-architecture then i was already able to find some deviations/violations in the "is"-architecture. So my question: should all modules of Core (scanner, primitives, composite, non_terminal) be independent of each other ? other questions: - are there architectural documents for the other libraries ? - which would be good candidates from your point of view ? (I think e.g. analyzing dependencies to the mpl libs is interesting) - is there a common rule which parts are public and which are private ? (I saw some impl directories but am a bit unsure about the API stuff) - is there a document describing the dependencies between the different libs (the "should" architecture). (I know of the bcp tool but this documents the "is"architecture essentially) sorry for the long post, but I think this is really interesting stuff and I am open to contribute in the architectural area :-) kind regards, Berni.

Upgraded to the version 0.10. Added boost::string::is_string<T> SFINAE-based check. That allowed to discriminate the applicability of conversion functions. Now they demand one of the parameters to be a string (in broad sense, like C strings, std::(w)string, chat/wchar_t-based containers) and the other *not* a string. Have straighten up the main boost::string::convert() interface (was quite broken) so that all the tests now run as expected. g++ 4.2.4 (Linux) and Visual Studio 2008 are happy. Thanks, Vladimir.

[future|interprocess] Could futures live in shared memory and synchronize process?

Hi, I'm working on Boost.Synchro a synchronization library that try to provide generic synchronization mechanism that can be used so synchronize threads or process. As a future is a synchronization mechanism, I was wondering if futures are intrisic of mutil-threaded programs and so they live in the protected process memory or if the concept can be used in a multi-process context and have futures/promises living on shared memory. Ion, what do you think, could it be possible to use futures/promises to synchronize process? Have some one a specific use case for this? _SECURE_SCL for msvc

Hello, the problem with _SECURE_SCL define was already discussed a few times on this list. But til now it came never to a end. Is there any interrest to get also compiled libraries for _SECURE_SCL enabled and _SECURE_SCL disabled? I think this would be really important because this compiler switch changes the abi and for that programs can crash. I think that a lot of people disable it already in their own programs, but may be they don't compile the boost libraries with this switch... Any comments? Regards Hansjörg

Thank you all who replied so far. It is very much and truly appreciated. Tally for far 1. The idea in principle seems to be largely accepted. Phil Endecott raised a concern if the effort was not a wheel-reinvention due to string/number conversions in N2408. I feel N2408 does not have as broad scope and has serious limitations (no user-type conversions, no handling of any container<char>, etc.) 2. The name of the namespace. People largely seem content with "boost::string". Andrey Semashev expressed a concern that the name was too generic and could clash with std::string (using namespace boost; using namespace std). A fair point. However, I do not feel it is a boost::string "problem" per se but rather the "problem" with using-directives (or rather mis-using-directives). Using-directives beat the whole purpose on a namespace and best avoided (see Stroustrup 8.2.3). From my actual experience it was not an issue. Long time ago I've introduced aux::string in two sizeable projects and honestly did not have one single complain about name clashing. Bo Persson also expressed a concern siting it'll make it "very hard to propose the utilities for inclusion in a future language standard". May be. May be not. When things of that magnitude happen (which seem quite remote at present) components get moved from a namespace to a namespace (several times) anyway. Like some stuff from the "boost" namespace moving to the "tr1" namespace just ultimately to be moved to the "std" namespace. Therefore, unless something major comes up later we are settling on "boost::string". 3. Naming of the conversion functions. The "to/from/is" set seems to sit well with the majority of people. The to_string/from_string was floated around as alternatives. I feel that the "_string" extension indeed serves a mildly useful purpose when the "string" namespace is obfuscated. Like namespace boost::string obfuscated; string str = obfuscated::from(i); // What the...? string str = obfuscated::to_string(i); // Somewhat better but still... When used sensibly string str = boost::string::from(i); or namespace boost::string str; string str = str::from(i); the intention seems clear and the following feels like a tautology: string str = boost::string::to_string(i); Robert Stewart mentioned that "is" is a poor name choice. It doesn't imply "can convert to" and can be expensive to execute. Fair enough. I'll keep the name around as a placeholder for a rainy day. We might not need it at all if we agree on something along the following lines: // No throw, return default on failure, dunno if failed. int i = boost::string::to<int>(str, default_value); // No throw, return default on failure, can check if failed. boost::string::value i = boost::string::to<int>(str, default_value); if (i.good()) successfully converted 4. String-To-Something Conversion Interface. Considerable number of people were not exactly happy with my off the cuff int i = boost::string::to<int>(str)(default_value); Well, I do not like it either... I just like saying/suggesting things that I regret later. :-) I probably got carried away by the functional-chain-ability concept. The main reason (for me) it is not good is that it imposes the default-constructibility requirement. I think people on the original lexical_cast-realted thread were pretty content with int i = boost::string::to<int>(str, -1); syntax. If so, then we won't need int i = to(str).or_default(-1) int i = to(str, default_ = -1) Can we agree on the following interface: template<class T, class String> boost::string::value<T> boost::string::to(String const&, T const& =T()) throw(); The usage is // Does not throw, returns -1 on failure. Don't care if failed int i1 = boost::string::to<int>(str, -1); // Does not throw, returns -1 on failure. Care if failed boost::value<int> i2 = boost::string::to<int>(str, -1); if (i2.good()) successful conversion6. 5. Formatting with manipulators. I've implemented a prototype and it works just fine. string str = "0xFF"; int i1 = boost::string::to<int>(str, -1) >> std::hex; // returns 255 int i2 = boost::string::to<int>(str, -1)(std::hex); // Same as above For the time being I keep both interfaces (via () and >>). 6. Something-To-String Conversion Interface. That did not seem to generate much heat at all. I'll summarize to make sure we see it the same way: template<class T> boost::string::value<std::string> boost::string::from(T const&) throw(); Does not throw. No default value (do we need one?). Returns string() of failure. Usage: std::string s1 = boost::string::from(-1); // 'int' type deduced std::string s2 = boost::string::from<double>(-1); // 'double' type forced std::string s3 = boost::string::from(15) >> std::hex; // returns "0xF" if (s1.empty()) conversion failed boost::string::value<std::string> s4 = boost::string::from(-1); if (s4.good()) conversion succeeded 7. Check-Convertibility Interface. If we agree on the behavior above (using boost::string::value), then the separate boost::string::is does not seem needed. 8. Throw/No-Throw Behavior. You might have noticed that the interface above *never* throws anything on failure. I would like to highlight the fact (as it's different from lexical_cast behavior) and make sure people are happy with it. Those who need an exception thrown could do boost::value<int> i2 = boost::string::to<int>(str, -1); if (!i2.good()) throw something youself; Is it satisfactory? 9. Requested features. a) Handling any container<char> (Phil Endecott). I implemented a rough cut using boost::range and it handles std::(w)string, char/wchar_t const* with ease. To handle any container we might look into extending the interface with something like template<class T, class Range> boost::string::value<T> boost::string::to(Range const&, T const& =T()) throw(); I have not looked into it throughly yet though. b) Integration with Spirit (Hartmut Kaiser). My focus is currently on the interface. Then, we can look at Spirit+boost-string behind it as a separate issue as it requires Joel (and other Spirit developers) involved. c) locale. I have not looked into it at all and I am not sure I am well-qualified. OTOH I hope it'll fit into the proposed interface as string s3 = boost::string::from(15) >> std::hex >> locale-related-functionality; or string s3 = boost::string::from(15)(std::hex)(locale-related-functionality); If so, then we can return to the issue when we get all the above taken care of. I am not sure I can answer all the questions sent so far individually. Some of the questions have been discussed/answered and hopefully this email might be of some help also. RE: convert() and directionality I've decided to stick with Robert's convert() (and his op>> as well. Thank you, Robert) as I agree with his view to leave the door open for possible extensions. That attitude has already proven useful to extend the conversions onto string-to-string (that I did not anticipate). With convert() it'll be easy to extend the existing functionality onto wstring<->u8string, etc. In string-to-string context the directionality issue is mute and I personally find convert() as very much appropriate. Even with string-to/from-type conversions directionality is still present (via types). I agree that with convert() the directionality is somewhat more subtle compared with to/from (or whatever the alternatives). RE: to/from: Yes, I understand quite a few people are not exactly thrilled with to/from. However, it is still here. Apologies. There are two (and a half) reasons for that -- 1) conceptual. Even though I am getting to like convert() more and more, I am still occasionally longing to express explicitly the direction of the conversion with to/from. 2) technical. This to/from-based interface is used in my current project and I am reluctant to needlessly disturb it in any way to avoid code reviews, etc. etc. 2.5) I happen to still like its terseness and directness as my code simply reads "string::to<int>" for string-to-int. I am getting more and more comfortable with convert() though. However, I've been using to/from for about 5 years and it feels like old shoes. Just give me some time to get used to something new. RE: to_string/from_string Somehow I did not like to_string/from_string from the start. I dunno. Just irrational primal dislike. I am sorry. Now it seems I might try putting some smoke-n-mirrors around that by justifying it by the functionality that Hartmut mentioned -- conversion from one symbol/character set to another. I've implemented it (v0.14) and it it like this: string encrypted = boost::string::convert(naked_str) >> my_cypher; string decrypted = boost::string::convert(encrypted) >> my_cypher; That is, we are converting from a string to again a string. Boost.Foreach is failing its tests on trunk on the intel-vc9-win-11.0 platform. If there is anyone with access to this platform who would like to run a couple of quick tests, you will be generously rewarded in your next life. Can't beat that. All you have to do is run foreach's tests 4 times with a slightly different config each time. In foreach.hpp, comment out all the config preprocessor gunk (everything between #include <boost/detail/workaround.hpp> and #include <boost/mpl/if.hpp>) and replace it with one of the following: #define BOOST_FOREACH_COMPILE_TIME_CONST_RVALUE_DETECTION or #define BOOST_FOREACH_RUN_TIME_CONST_RVALUE_DETECTION or #define BOOST_FOREACH_NO_CONST_RVALUE_DETECTION or #define BOOST_FOREACH_NO_RVALUE_DETECTION Report the number of test failures each time. autolinking

I'd like to build a boost subset using my own build system. I'd like to turn off autolinking and control the names of the libraries, but it seems I can't. Is that intentional? I tried to use BOOST_AUTO_LINK_NOMANGLE as a starting point but setting that only helped for the first inclusion of auto_link.hpp, since it undefines it. Can I offer this trivial patch, or at least suggest something similar? Hi, I have made today a few tests to compare the different possibilities to search min,max of a value. I had some really strange results which I don't have expected. As environment I use VS2008 Express edition,not managed, defines are SECURE_SCL=0 and NDEBUG=1. Fusion + New Iterator Concepts?

Greetings Ladies and Gents, I've been kicking around a problem in which I'm trying to create an access policy interface which specializes compile-time and run-time access to values mapped on an integral index. I.e. something like: value_type access<T>::get<Index>( T t ) value_type access<T>::get( T t, size_t index ) Where access<T> describes a specialized access policy for T. In this context T is a sequence of anything (polymorphic even) that provides a value_type instance. The elements of T may be simple values, a generator() instance, A member function of some type etc. I began implementing an access type to specialize compile-time indexed access which assumes T is a model of the Boost.Fusion RandomAccessSequence which works wonderfully. I then began to write an extension that allows me to define fusion sequences of member functions (which provide the required values.) This is where I seem to have hit a snag. Among the use-cases I would like to support is a case where the value is returned from the provider using pass-by-value semantics. Fusion seems to be built using iterator concepts which essentially expect the underlying types to be able to provide a reference type. Looking further I found a document in the Boost.Iterator library defining "New Iterator Concepts" ( see: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_38_0/libs/iterator/doc/new-iter-concepts.ht… ) . This document seems to define exactly what I need which is the separation of traversal behavior from access behavior. My question (finally!) is whether or not anyone has thought about applying these ideas to Boost.Fusion (or if they are perhaps already supported in some undocumented form?) Cheers, Brandon

The BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT.. macros have been moved into a detail namespace (1.38) from a (public) anonymous namespace (1.37). I'm guessing that the reasoning for this was in order to avoid many definitions of the class singletons. However, this appears to have enforced that all of the guids (for all archive types) now have to reside in a single compilation unit. The attached code illustrates the limitation; this compiles under 1.37 but results in duplicate symbol definitions in 1.38 (with MSVC7.1). It worked with 1.37 because the anonymous namespace ensured no symbol clashes, but now the symbols are all in the same namespace. The example shows a case where two archive types (xml and binary) might be in use. The obvious solution to this (simple) case would be to just use a single compilation unit, which brings in the guids for both binary and xml. However, turning a blind eye to the 'untidiness', this fix does not help with the project we're working on. In our project, there is not just a simple type being serialized; there are a lot more classes and a bit of mpl thrown in. This actually resulted in breaching the COFF symbol limit (approx. 65k) with MSVC7.1, so we were forced to split the serialization. In fact, we had to split both the save and load parts of the binary serialization. Our current workaround is to use the archive.register_type<...> method, and ignore the export macros, but this does mean ensuring all types are covered (as described in the documentation).

If you stick to Unicode Code Page 0 then UTF-16 might be appropriate if you have no formatting bits, but by the time you want to do a full Unicode text editor you end up with [from memory] 21 or 22 bits of the UTF-32 encoding, and the remaining bits for your own formatting info if you need it [font/ colour etc]. With surrogates, you are still [very] slightly encoded in a 32 bit width, but this is a very acceptable trade off for simplicity. In that sense UTF-32 is a misnomer as it does not occupy a full 32 bits, but it is still an encoding ! Yours, Graham

Request For a feature - Templated virtual functions

Hi All, As you all know, there are situations, wherein the virtual function usage can be replaced with templates. But virtual functions can never be used with templates, since all the instantiations have to be tracked to form the virtual function table. But we can ask the user to provide a typelist of classes, that would probably be used with the virtual template function. I think this would solve this issue for most of the cases. Analyzing the instances where this would be useful - a) Any virtual function, which might need different types of arguments (not related to the inheritance hierarchy) b) I have a multi-method design pattern, where in i need more than one run-time resolution through the virtual functions. But sometimes, i might know one of the actual derived classes involved, with which i can avoid one virtual function call. I am not an expert in C++, but one way of achieving this would be to manually have a hash table with all the necessary function pointers for each class in the base class hierarchy and one such set for each of the classes mentioned in the typelist. If we put it up for review again as top-level boost library, it will need to be fully documented, with samples and test cases. The library has been on the review boards for over a year. There is a certain priviledge to being a top-level boost library. It needs to be reserved for libraries that have received the appropriate amount of peer review. That cleary did not occur here. I agree that if a "review" does not generate enough reviews, than it should be scheduled again, with refined review criteria to attract more reviewers the next time. That is how I am inclined to proceed. Adding concurrent programming libraries to boost without lots and lots of peer review is a mistake. It is an extremely difficult subject. I've created a test framework that explores issues that I'm concerned about. For the most part, I'm more concerned about the bigger picture and how parralel programming is added to boost. There are many issues that will need to be considered. The story of parralel programming is still evolving and needs the input of many more people who have practical real world experience, particularly about task managment. Of course, you can still comment on how you would like to procceed. Unfortunately, as far as this review goes, I would have liked to see many more comments and reviews.

Hi, with 1_38_0 I can't get any code compiling related to spirit; all that worked with 1_34_1. According to those compiler warnings I'm using now the "classic" versions, but this doesn't help. Hi, Some weeks ago Howard Hinnant presented on this ML a quite satisfactory emulation of C++0x move semantics. There is also Boost.Move, the adaptation to boost by Daniel James of the Adobe implementation, which was inspired by the move library written by Dave Abrahams and the work on move done by Dave Abrahams and Howard Hinnant. This library is esential to avoid a profusion of move emulation implementation on each library and start to build generics with move semantics. Can we expect to have a proposal for review soon? Hello, I want to build version 1_38_0, but I can't progress due to missing build-documentation. I need to use bjam (due to special demands on the build), and my platform is Linux. Apparently besides this little bit of information at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_38_0/more/getting_started/unix-variants.html there is nothing available? (Even to get there is not obvious --- you need to click on "microsoft install" first, in order to find a further link to Linux/Unix install?) So well, I invoke "bjam --help": Usage says bjam [options] [properties] [install|stage] where under "properties" we find Properties: toolset=toolset Indicates the toolset to build with. variant=debug|release Select the build variant link=static|shared Whether to build static or shared libraries threading=single|multi Whether to build single or multithreaded binaries runtime-link=static|shared Whether to link to static or shared C and C++ runtime. What's the syntax here?? "--toolset=gcc", as one finds it on that webpage above, or "toolset=gcc", as that information seems to suggest (since for the options the "--" is mentioned)?? Unfortunately, it seems that, different from all other build systems I'm aware of, bjam doesn't print out a summary of what it will be doing. I tried many variations of syntax, but apparently it never worked out. There is an option which is potentially relevant, "--build-type", but again I don't know what are the possible parameters for that --- since there are no examples, I don't know how to read the cryptic listing (syntax-wise). What I need to achieve is simple: 1) I need to specify a locally installed gcc toolset: Past installations suggested to use the options --toolset=gcc-4.1.2 --toolset-root=PATH-TO-LOCAL-INSTALLATION --"-sGCC_ROOT_DIRECTORY=PATH-TO-LOCAL-INSTALLATION" I can't find any information on that topic. 2) I need a local installation of boost; that works out: --prefix=XXX --build-dir=YYY no problem here. 3) No python; this seems also unproblematic (but apparently it vanished from the documentation?) --without-python 4) Only simple names for the built libraries; this seems also to work with --layout=system 5) No multi-threading: Don't know how to achieve this: Somehow "threading=single" seems to be needed here, but I don't know how to specify it (whatever I do, I always end up with libraries with the "mt"-ending). Review Request: Introduction of boost::string namespace and string-conversion functions

Based on the previous string-conversion-related discussion that revolved around lexical_cast (started with http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2009/01/147013.php) and Dave's suggestion (http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2009/02/147995.php) I would like to propose to create a new boost::string namespace where I'd expect all string-related functionality might be logically housed. Dave already mentioned that "Jeff Garland had a really nice set of proposed extensions to std::string that could live in the same space". My immediate interest/proposal in that namespace would be the string-conversion functionality. The basics of that functionality are currently handled by lexical_cast but need extended and unambiguously tagged as *string*-related conversions. During discussion I've got a strong impression that the majority of people, the lexical_cast author (Kevlin) and the maintainer (Alex) strongly favor leaving lexical_cast as-is and having a fresh start capitalizing on the past experiences. Therefore I'd like to propose the string-conversion functionality that'd be housed inside that mentioned boost::string namespace. This proposal of mine probably is not as conventional as I have no implementation code to show. That is because before committing to it any further (or dragging someone else into it) I would initially like to see if we can agree on 1) creating boost::string (or some other as descriptive name) namespace; 2) the interface for that proposed string-conversion functionality. For example, int i_from_s = boost::string::is<int>(s) ? boost::string::to<int>(s) // safe to request conversion : some-failure-value; I like to/from names as they allow me to read the code as it was merely English -- "string to int", "string from int". I expect string::to() and string:;from() to return a helper object as Dave suggested namespace string { template <class T> struct value { operator T() const; // throws iff parse unsuccessful bool good() const; // true iff parse will succeed ... }; } That'll allow as to make the interface consistent and extendable/chainable: 4) int i_from_s = boost::string::to<int>(s)(-1); The above is a non-throwing variation of #1 with the default value provided for failed conversion. 5) int i_from_s = boost::string::to<int>(s)(std::hex); 6) std::string s_from_i = boost::string::from<int>(i)(std::hex); The above is variations of #1 and #2 with the std::hex manipulator/formatter applied. That "chained" approach would allow to keep the interface consistency without sacrificing the flexibility. For example, 7) int i_from_s = boost::string::to<int>(s)(-1)(std::hex)(yet-another-manipulator); or add some other features when the need arises. Profiling template instantiations

AMDG Over the last few days, I've been working on a tool that counts the number of class template instantiations in a translation unit. To use it from a jamfile import profile_templates : : directory of the tool ; template-profile result : some_file.cpp : <include>some_directories ; If everything works, this will create a file with the extension .tp which will contain the number of times each class template was instantiated, with the most common templates at the top. I've put a zip of a rough version in the vault. http://www.boost-consulting.com/vault/index.php?action=downloadfile&filenam… Caveats: I've only tested with Visual C++ 9.0 and gcc 3.4.4 on cygwin so far. https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/newticket has a Type dropdown-list that has "Bugs" as default. When my report has a patch file attached, should I set the Type to "Patches" instead? If fact, the report I have in mind is mainly a performance issue. I would like boost::array::swap to internally call boost::swap, instead of std::swap_ranges, mainly because some C++03 implementations of std::swap_ranges exchange the elements by doing element-wise copy operations, even when there is a custom swap for the element type. The new boost::swap utility takes care of calling the appropriate custom swap, whenever found by argument-dependent lookup (ADL). My report will have a patch. So is the type of such a report considered a "Feature Request", a "Bug", or a "Patch"? Andrey, Thank you for your contribution. I do not think I'll be participating in trial-runs or review as such. However, I read through the documentation and looked at the interface and I thought I'll give you my first (well, second, I looked at your lib. before) impression. I realize that everyone probably has something to say about logging and such a debate can get hot. So, I want to say beforehand that my reply is merely my impression (not a review or criticism of any kind). Firstly, it certainly seems very rich in features and configurable. That is certainly a huge plus for such a library as logging. However, I was truly overwhelmed by the documentation, the interface and the deployment examples. I seemed to be reading about familiar concepts -- severity levels, sinks, filters, formatters, streams/channels. However, after all that I did not feel an inch closer to actually deploying your library. I consider myself a moderately intelligent person but the seeming complexity felt quite intimidating. Somehow other implementations I read about (J.Torjo's, log4cpp, log4j, a bunch of loggers at SourceForge) went down much easier. Roughly, as a user I'd expect something as straightforward as boost::log log(name); // Create a log boost::log::sink sink = boost::log::sink(file)(stdout)(event_log); // Set up sinks boost::log::formatter fmt = boost::log::formatter(date)(thread_id)(name); // Set up the formatter boost::log channel = log.channel(channel-name); // Create a channel log(sink)(fmt); // Associate sinks and formatting if (log) log << "Hello, main world"; if (channel) channel << "Hello, channel world"; Maybe that's what your interface does. I just did not get that warm and fuzzy easiness/familiarity feeling after reading the docs and looking at the deployment examples. I feel there is a considerable room for improvement here. In particular I was left puzzled how you actually create a log instance (I think in the docs it is boost::src::logger). I'd expect to be able to create a log instance with a name and to be able to retrieve that same instance by the name anywhere in the program. That is, boost::log log1(name); boost::log log2(name); would be referring to the same log instance (pointer semantics). That'd be very liberating. Best, Vladimir.

Hi Steven, We have created a framework for debugging/profiling template metaprograms in 2006. It might give you a few tips. It works based on the same idea you have. We instrument all template codes, both at the begining and at the end of each template we insert a special piece of code emitting warning messages of a well-defined form. Before instrumentation we create an XML file to remember the template positions in the source file. When we parse the warning, using this information we can reconstruct the instantiation stack knowing the original line numbers, identifiers, etc.. At the end we produce another XML for possible front-ends. The framework uses boost::spirit and boost::wave. We have also implemented and tested a visual studio plug-in. [TR1] Problems with TR1 include paths with Mingw?

Hi, I've got some code that i've been building with MSVC that uses the TR1 lib by adding the boost/tr1/tr1 dir to the include path, which i'm now trying to build using Mingw/msys. It seems to build ok using the code on the release branch, but using the current trunk i get: d:/Boost/BoostSVN/boost/tr1/detail/config_all.hpp:162:41: error: ../4.3.2/utility: No such file or directory Am i doing something silly, or have the recent changes to the include logic broken something for Mingw? Is it a bug in old version of boost?

I have the following code in my application. But I find it causes a serious memory leak with a product we are using. Our application is a plug-in to this product. But we are not sure what's the boost version included by this product. We have tested above code separately with boost 1.35.0, 1.37.0, it's OK. So can anybody tell me if it's any problem in above code? Or is it a bug in old version of boost date_time or MS Visual Studio 2003/2005? Or how can I work around it?

Gauging interest in a thread-safe containers library

Hi all, I've recently been doing some work that required thread-safe containers (queue, channel) and I found that in addition to these, a locking_ptr with similar semantics to boost::shared_ptr (except being thread-safe too) allowed me to perform all my threaded operations without needing to worry about synchronisation outside the container/locking_ptr code, and without a major impact on performance compared to coding locks in a slightly less generic (== paranoid) way. These have been re-used with some success by others, and a couple of containers (specifically the queue and channel) seem to be used commonly enough to be worthy of an inclusion in Boost.Thread or similar. This discussion has been had in the past, on this thread: http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2004/09/71454.php Someone else mentioned it later, but there doesn't seem to be much else said here: http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2005/11/96991.php I was wondering if there is more interest now, a few years on. Some of the pros I can think of are: * Writing correct thread-safe code can be tricky (I messed up the first time I wrote my queue). * Use of multithreading is perhaps more prevalent now, with many-core CPUs, than it was 4 years ago * Queues / channels in particular are very useful for building threaded pipelines etc, and more people might be tempted to use such programming techniques if a safe option was available "out-of-the-box" * A thread-safe shared pointer provides a lazy but effective way of synchronising data in many scenarios (my implementation supports the usual boost::shared_ptr stuff except for get(), -> and *: dereferencing is provided by calling an acquire() function which returns a scoped_lock object on which you can call * and ->.The destructor of the scoped_lock releases the lock.) * The thread-safe shared pointer means you could use a pop-copy queue without significant overhead (depending on use) * The code length for these class templates on a single platform is actually quite short (a hundred lines of code or so) Some cons: * Need to support all the platforms Boost works on * Not much interest for these containers last time * More code to maintain * Questions about how re-usable a synchronised queue is due to performance worries (I believe this not to be a major problem for a major class of problems - e.g. pipelining fairly long operations, such as in image and video processing) I'm sure I've missed some things, but I'd be interesting in hearing whether there's a positive or negative reaction to this. I'd be happy to contribute code for this - it wouldn't be the fastest possible code, but I believe that robust, lightweight, maintainable code is better than nothing in this case, even if it's not the very best lock-free implementation. Interest in a protected pointer

Is there any interest in pointer wrapper similar to scoped_ptr or shared_ptr which can be used for pointer member variable which can the referenced value can't be modified by non const functions? The release branch (https://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/branches/release) is open for merging all stable changes from trunk, including bug fixes and major upgrades to existing libraries. Breaking changes should be coordinated via the mailing list with the developers of the other libraries affected. New libraries may be added, but only with the permission of a release manager. In other words, except for new libraries, merging changes *does not* need permission from a release manager. I.e. just do it! The release schedule: * March 13, 2009: branches/release closed for new libraries and breaking changes to existing libraries. Still open for bug fixes and other routine changes to all libraries. * March 20, 2009: Release managers start QA checks. * April 3, 2009: branches/release closed for major code changes. Hi, I see in the Trac system that there are bugs with Milestone 1.36, 1.37. 1.38 and To be determined. As we will not have 1.36.x, 1.37.x releases, and possibly neither 1.38, shouldn't we change the Milestone to 1.39? For the To be determined, shouldn't we change to the corresponding Milestone Boost 1.39, Boost.Jam 3.1.18 Boost.Jam 4.0.0, Website 1.X. Maybe the ToBeDetermined Milestone is not a good idea. I have not counted the tickets without a Milestone, I don't know how to do. BTW, Should'nt the version be a mandatory field? As there are 196 + 97 + 156 + 181= 630 tickets to change it would be great if there is an easy way to do that. As always, here are some questions you might want to answer in your review(s): What is your evaluation of the design(s)? What is your evaluation of the implementation(s)? What is your evaluation of the documentation? What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library(s)? Did you try to use the library? With what compiler(s)? Did you have any problems? How much effort did you put into your evaluation(s)? A glance? A quick reading? In-depth study? Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain? Do you think the libraries should be accepted into Boost as-is or should they be merged? Apparently, there has been various discussions about these two libraries last six months. The authors will need to bring us up to date as to why they want their libraries to be reviewed seperately. Also, each author should evaluate each others library and point out the differences in their implentations. These will serve as useful discussion points. The ideal outcome in my mind would be a resubmitted submission, incorporating the best ideas from each. Tell me if you share this view or what is your preferred result. Detecting reuslt_of support - Error with VC 9

I've developepd this code snippet to detect if a type has the proper inner types for supporting result_of protocol : http://codepad.org/mcY4K7Sf It works fine under gcc and icc but fail under VC 9 with the following error : error C2903: 'result' : symbol is neither a class template nor a function template error C3202: 'result' : invalid default argument for template parameter '<Unknown>', expected a class template error C2976: 'has_result_impl' : too few template arguments seems I can't make VC to accept an unspecified template type as a template template parameter. Is there any known workaround for this situation I can implement to make this traits works in VC 9 ?

libraries dependencies

I am working on a "yet another" build tool :) and as part of performance testing I am doing boost modularization. Boost was chosen because I work with it more then 5 years and it big enough and known to me. Modularization of boost 1.34.1 was successful and 31 (not all yet) libraries was tested. That was easy. But when I tried to modularize boost 1.36.0 I faced circular dependencies that I can't break. Some old part of boost that have enormous interheader dependencies I separated in /boost/core library(mpl + preprocessor + bind + utility + many small .hpp + details). For boost 1.34.1 I decided that throw_exception.hpp must reside in /boost/core library. For 1.36.0 I decided to put it in /boost/exception because it is natural place for that functionality. But /boost/exception is dependent on /boost/smart_ptr that dependent on /boost/exception. And ooops - we have circular dependency. I can place both /boost/exception and /boost/smart_ptr into /boost/core but that seams really wrong to me. I known that some folks working on CMake build system and also need modularize boost. So my question is: Is there any plans to do refactoring/cleaning/reorganizing/... to make boost have more clean inter-libraries dependencies? Thanx

Good day to everyone! Is there some reason why call_traits<SomeEnum>::param_type evaluates to be the const_reference (const SomeEnum&) instead of value_type (SomeEnum)? Folks, SVN commit 51104 to trunk provides the basic support for building all the Boost libraries that can be as PDF's: * improved fo.xsl stylesheet, * tweaked individual Jamfiles so they find their images etc when being built as a PDF, * adds doc/pdf/Jamfile.v2 to build all boost libraries that can be as individual PDF's. Known TODO's ~~~~~~~~~~~ * Some of the PDF's are badly named: for example the python tutorial is simply "tutorial.pdf", Phoenix is "users_manual.pdf" and Boost.Build is "standalone.pdf". Anyone know how to get Boost.Build to rename a file or else change the name of Boostbook target? * The libraries Conversion, Optional and Thread do not currently build as PDF's - their XML is invalid, looks like an easy fix though - just tweak their usage of hyperlinks at global (i.e. not in a section) scope. I think I can make the changes for this one if their authors agree. * The BoostBook documentation doesn't build as a PDF - Lots of invalid XML - this one looks much harder to fix. Hey, I really enjoy using BOOST_FOREACH on containers, saves a ton of typing. However, one semi-annoying problem that I've ran into is that nesting instances of BOOST_FOREACH causes the gcc argument -Wshadow to complain quite a bit. That parameter would be token-pasted onto the end of the variable name, and get rid of the warnings. One could define up to N more macros of the form BOOST_FOREACH_NESTED_N that get rid of the third parameter, by calling that macro appropriately. This wouldn't break any existing code, and would allow those that choose to get rid of the warnings. There are a number of arguments against such a change: (a) -Wshadow is gcc specific and isn't enabled by default, (b) If you don't like the warning, don't nest BOOST_FOREACH statements, or don't use -Wshadow. However, my feeling (and this is probably just a matter of personal preference) is that given the triviality of the fix, theres no reason to not fix it. Granted, I could easily just make my own and stick it in a header file, but it seems like it would make more sense to be in boost itself. I could create a patch and post it if so desired. Thanks! Dear all, It looks like boost::mpi::detail::mpi_data_type_cache() (in boost/mpi/detail/mpi_datatype_cache.hpp) is missing a declspec declaration, causing unresolved external symbols when trying to give a specialization of is_mpi_datatype. Is my use case (Windows, dynamic, "simple" types that qualify for is_mpi_datatype) unusual so that this hasn't been picked up before? Or am I missing something obvious? [lexical_cast] A suggestion

I use boost::lexical_cast quite a bit. Possibly due to specifics of my task I constantly stumble upon two things: 1. It throws if/when conversion fails; 2. It requires the 'Target' class to be default-constructible. I'd like to suggest extending the existing template<class Target, class Source> Target lexical_cast(Source const& arg) interface with template<class Target, class Source> Target lexical_cast(Source const& arg, Target const& failure_value) The behavior of the latter would be to return the 'failure_value' if/when the conversion fails. That communicates the fact of the conversion failure differently (without an exception thrown), i.e. its usage would be as following: int value = boost::lexical_cast(some-string, -1); if (value == -1) conversion failed. In fact, my usage pattern is such that I often do not even need to check the success of the conversion -- if the conversion fails, the supplied failure/default value is returned/used and proceeded with. Secondly, the proposed lexical_cast requirements would be looser -- no need for the default-constructibility of the Target, only the copy-constructibility (as already required anyway). An extension to boost::variant

While boost::variant is very capable at what it does, there is one thing it doesn't do (and maybe with very good reason, which I'm sure somebody on this list will be capable of pointing out to me if this is the case ;) Anyhow, boost::variant requires each of the enclosed types to be assignable, which is clearly not met of a reference type. My question is this: why can't boost::variant be clever about reference data types (detected using type_traits is_reference), and internally store them as pointers (type derived by using type_traits remove_reference). The outside API (assignment, output streaming, visitation, comparison, etc) could still treat the object as a reference. The reason I want this, is to have a nice String variant, that encapsulates the various forms a string can take in a current project: std::strings, char*'s, and std::string* and boost::shared_ptr<std::string>. I want functions to be able to handle all of these types transparently by using variants as the argument types. Allowing "const std::string&" as a variant type allows this to be done while not requiring a wasteful string copy. Are there any caveats to this that I should be aware of? (I have a small custom variant class implementing this, and it appears to work well. It's not as 'full fledged' as the boost::variant class, but the approach I've taken could surely be grafted on to boost::variant.) Cheers, Chris Hamilton

Update on the BGL. I've just ported my SOC work en masse from 2007 to the BGL trunk. New features include: * [un]directed_graph classes - wrappers around adjacency lists. These serve as introductory classes to help with prototyping. They also try to hide all of the problems with vertex indices and property maps - as in every algorithm requires vertex maps, but only VerteSet == vecS provides them. * degree_centraility - algorithms for computing the degree centrality of vertices in a graph. Includes measures of influence and prestige. * closeness_centraltiy - algoritghms for computing the closeness centraility (based on SSPs) for vertices in a graph. * geodesic_distance - Computes the small-world and mean geodesic distances of graphs. * eccentricity - Algorithms for computing eccentricity, and the radius and diameter of the graph. * clustering_coefficient - Returns the clustering coefficient of a vertex or the average CC for the entire graph. * core_numbers - Partitioning of a graph into cores based on vertex degree (from David Gleich) * all_cycles - Find and visit all cycles in a graph (Tiernan) * all_cliques - Find and visit all cliques in a graph (Bron & Kerbosch) * exterior_properties - A new framework for helping define exterior properties (and property maps) for graphs. New graph concepts: * VertexIndexGraph - any graph for which get(vertex_index, g) is valid * EdgeIndexGraph - any graph for which get(edge_index, g) is valid Since nearly every algorithm requires a vertex index map in one way or another, these may as well be concepts. Also, its a convenient documentary artifact that lets you write, "If your graph is not a *IndexMap, then you must provide an index map as an exterior property." Documentation for these features is forthcoming. Its part of my project to (finally) migrate the BGL docs over to quickbook. There are tests for most of these features - some are in progress - others are woefully inadequate and under development. Since I'm generally pretty busy, these will probably materialize slowly. [thread|interprocess] Boost.Synchro: Towards a generic view of synchronization mechanisms

Hi, Currently there are two libraries defining mutex, condition variables and locks in Boost (Boost.Thread and Boost.Interprocess), which have similar interfaces but with some differences. This has as consequence that we can not interchange them. One of the reasons is that we are not working with concepts, and algorithms. Both boost::mutex and boost::interprocess_mutex are models of the same Lockable concept, but not because they share a common syntax but because they share a common semantics. Can we see a binary_semaphore as a Lockable? Well, usually a binary_semaphore will define operations such a post and wait, so binary_semaphore do no share the common syntax as boost::mutex and boost::interprocess_mutex. On the semantic side wait can be assimilated to lock and post to unlock. By the way, there are also other syntactical differences between the Boost.Thread and Boost.Interprocess classes. So how can we write gerenic code that can be used with every model of the concepts. The idea consist in switching from the OO paradigm to the functional paradigm. We found the same approach Boost.MPL and Boost.Fusion between others. So instead of requiring that a model of the concept Lockable defines the member functions lock and unlock, we require that the functional expressions lock(m) and unlock(m) are well founded. A generic Synchro library can define a default implementation that forwards to the member function. namespace synchro { template <typename Lockable> void lock(Lockable& lockable) { return lockable.lock(); } } Now we can overload the lock function on a binary_semaphore as namespace synchro { void lock(binary_semaphore& sem) { return sem.wait(); } } Just another example for a class template anotherLockableModel that models the Lockable concept but that with acquire/release functions. We need to overload again the lock function. namespace synchro { template< typename T> void lock( anotherLockableModel<T>& lockable ) { return lockable.acquire(); } } However, there are cases where overloads do not suffice (as described in N1295 - Partial specialization of function templates), and we need to use partial specialization of function templates. On compiler that do not support partial specialization of function templates we can use a workaround, that is, use partial specialization of class templates. The default implementation will now forward to a static function of a class which has forward to the member function namespace synchro { namespace partial_specialization_workaround { template< typename Lockable > struct lock { static void apply( Lockable& lockable ) { return lockable.lock(); } }; } template <typename Lockable> void lock(Lockable& lockable) { return partial_specialization_workaround::lock<Lockable>::apply(lockable); } } So now the user can partially specialize the class template partial_specialization_workaround::lock and define the apply function as needed: namespace synchro { namespace partial_specialization_workaround { template< typename T> struct lock <anotherLockableModel<T> >{ static void apply( anotherLockableModel<T>& lockable ) { return lockable.acquire(); } }; } } Once we have all the Lockable operations defined in this way, and do the same for ConditionVariable, we can define in a generic way unique_lock, shared_lock and upgrade_lock that works with boost::shared_mutex as boost::interprocess::interprocess_upgradable_mutex. This could leverage these libraries to define its own locks classes. Ion, Anthony, Boosters what do you think of applying this approach to get a generic Synchro library? Greetings, Please forgive me for intruding on the Boost Development mailing list. I'm rather new to Boost, but I'm in love with it, because IMHO it shows C++ as it should be used. :) While browsing this mailing list, I came across the review announcement[1] for the Boost Constrained Value library[2]. I like the concept, so I downloaded[3] and installed the library. I also installed file boost/utility/swap.hpp from the sandbox. I had to hack the example program[4] to get around "[boost] [utility/swap] Ambiguous overload"[5]. To get familiar with Boost and the Boost Constrained Value library, I first rewrote the example program into a Boost.Test testcase[6]. (I have tried not to disturb the documentation generated from this file, but I did not test this.) As testcase, it runs succesfully, with the hack mentioned above. (At least for me, Emacs has problems with font-lock-mode[7] on this file. The original example program does not demonstrate this problem.) In the section on Custom error policies in the example program, perhaps it should be explicitely stated that: - on entry into the error handler, constraint(new_value) will always be false. An error handler that neither changes the constraint, nor supplies a valid value can therefore throw unconditionally. - on entry into the error handler, constraint(value) will only be false during the construction of an object with an invalid value. If the error handler does not throw in this case, the library will raise signal SIGABRT (application abort requested). - the only case where the error handler can be empty is when the constraint always returns true, as in 'template <typename ValueType> class unconstrained'[8]. This code[9] illustrates these points. Next I was itching to create and more real-life use case for the Boost Constrained Value library, with special attention on improving error reporting. So I wrote four template classes[10], implementing non-positive, non-negative, positive and negative constraints over any integral type. (This code still can be improved in many ways.) These constrained integers can be declared like: positiveInteger<int> i; // Construction with value 0 would fail, BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL( i, 1 ); // so it is set to 1. They can used like teir base type. In case of constraint violations (e.g. 'i = 1;' for 'i' above), an exception is thrown, which derives from both std::logic_error and boost::exception. The std::logic_error::what() returns: Failed assert(1 <= 0); And from the boost::exception, the following information can be retrieved (slightly edited to fit the newsgroup): constrained-integer.hpp:168: In '[very long function name]': Failed assert(-1 > 0); constrained-integer.cpp:82: Constraint was defined here. See the first testcase in the Boost.Test testsuite[11] for the code that produced these messages from boost::exception. The remainder of the testsuite runs the four template classes both against fundamental types, and against classes that implement infinite precision integer arithmetic. This showed that I needed to implement 'bool operator == (const Integer & v) const' for these classes, but not for the fundamental types. As implementing this operator==() for fundamental types results in compiler errors, the implementation is present only when preprocessor symbol 'CLASS_TYPE' is defined. (My attempt to hack this in the Boost Constrained Value library source failed.) Note that no hackery is needed for the relational operators used in the constraints. Otherwise, the testsuite compiles correctly and runs almost as expected. It would appear that in the process I may have discovered a bug[12] in the mp_math library in the sandbox. One question I have is related to the requirement of the Constrained Value library that the constraint and error handler objects must be completely constructed before the constrained object is constructed. In these four template classes, I handle this by deriving my template type (e.g. nonPositiveInteger) from the constraint class and indirectly from the error handler class. The purpose is to allow these template types to be used as drop-in replacements for the types they constrain. In this context it appears to work, but I'm having second thoughts about its validity and advisability. Although it is not a Boost question, is there anybody who wants to comment? One thing that has gotten me completely stumped is deriving my own template class from constrained_value::unconstrained. Whatever I try, I get the weirdest of compiler error messages. See the bottom of [10] and [11] for my latest attempt in the section guarded by '#ifdef DO_UNCONSTRAINED'. I must be missing something obvious. Also all other comments will be appreciated. I'm interested in something like constrained, but applied to a vector of values. The case I'm interested in is a homogeneous vector of bounded int values, with bounds set at runtime. It is trivial to have a vector<bounded<int> >, but this would not be space efficient in the case where the policies, bounds on all the values are the same. I'm thinking that maybe some parts of constrained (such as policies) could be reused, independent of the rest of constrained. Has anyone looked into the idea of constrained vector?

[1.38.0] beta 2 release candidate

The beta 1 release candidate from earlier in the week had enough issues that I decided not to push it out to sourceforge. Most (all?) of those issues have been corrected, and a new release candidate is up at http://boost.cowic.de/rc/ If no showstoppers surface I plan to move this beta to sourceforge tomorrow (Friday) and announce it here, the users list, and the announce list. The final 1.38.0 release would then come about week later. There are pending bug fixes for Boost.Python and Boost.Asio that are not in the beta but Dave and Chris are planning to have ready for the final release. --Beman

Hi all, I've made some minor changes to the Boost Constrained Value library: - reorganized the structure of header files, - renamed saturating/saturating_int into clipping/clipping_int, - using boost::swap where applicable (if you don't have it, you need to get it from http://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/branches/release/boost/utility/swap.hpp) - made no_constraint policy public, - now the stream operators are not defined if BOOST_NO_IOSFWD macro is defined, - fixed identifiers containing "__" (not allowed by C++), - fixed minor language errors in the docs. The library is ready for the formal review, which starts this monday (1.12). It is only missing the detailed regression tests, which will be added after the review. Currently the examples file (libs\constrained_value\doc\src\examples.cpp) can be used instead -- it uses most of the functionality of the library and should compile and run returning 0. Hi, I have just released the version 0.4, which includes since my last publicly announced version 0.3.0: Version 0.4.0, Fevrary 8, 2009 Improvements + bug fixes New Features: * New free functions for all the AsynchronousCompletionToken operations, providing a higher degree of freedom. * Missing have_all_values(), have_all_exception() and are_all_ready() functions on AsynchronousCompletionToken fusion tuples. * get_all: getting all the values from a tuple of AsynchronousCompletionToken works now. * fork_after overloaded for a single dependency * wait_all overloaded for a single ACT. * wait_for_all evaluate one of its elements on the current thread * No need to use wait_and_get() on thread_specific_shared_ptr<> to synchronize with the decoration if the thread is created using a AsynchronousExecutor decorator. In this case the synchro is done before returning the AsynchronousCompletionToken. See the tutorial and the mono_thread_id example. Fixed Bugs: v0.2#1: ae::get_all do not work yet. get_all() do not work because fusion transform sequence function can not take non const sequences. I have emulated it using set_all() and a transformation for a tuple of _ACT to a tuple of result_type. v0.3.1#1: keep alive mechanism crash when setting set_on_dead_thread() before enabling the mechanism. This was due to the fact that there were no default data for the backup. v0.3.1#2: keep alive mechanism do not detect dead threads. We need to reset the counters only when the period is 0. v0.3.1#3: The set_on_dead_thread() setting is not recovered by embeeding kep_alive enablers/disablers. The problem is that the on_dead() the function and the thread pointer were stored on the backup. It is enough to store them on the thread_keep_alive_ctx and make the functions thread_safe. Version 0.3.1, January 25, 2009 bug fixes Fixed Bugs: v0.3#3: scheduler::do_test_fork_after_wait do not work yet. To solve this issue it enough to define boost::move for tp::task v0.3#2: scheduler::do_test_fork_after_get do not work yet. Not reproductible v0.2#2: Some trouble with the use of tp::pool directly, use scheduler instead. Four issues. The parameter to fork on tp:pool was a const F& instead of a F. The joiner is used to synchronise with and pick up the result from a function or to manage the encapsulated thread. * tp::pool and tp::task customization as an AsynchronousExecutor and an AsynchronousCompletionToken respectively. tp::pool can be seen as a tp::task factory executing asynchronously a function on a pool of threads. a generic asynchronous_executor_decorator which allows to decorate the function to be evaluated asynchronously. * Some thread extension * A thread_decoration class allowing to define setup/cleanup functions which will be called only once by thread (if the thread function is decorated with thread_decorator): setup before the thread function and cleanup at thread exit. It is used together with asynchronous_executor_decorator * A thread_decorator/thread_decorate class/function which decorate a thread function in order to call the setup and the cleanup of all the thread_decorations. * A thread specific shared pointer which is an extension of the thread_specific_ptr providing access to this thread specific context from other threads. As it is shared the stored pointer is a shared_ptr instead of a raw one. * A thread keep alive mechanism: this mechanism allows to detect threads that do not prove that they are alive by calling to the keep_alive_point regularly. When a thread is declared dead a user provided function is called, which by default will abort the program. Hi, I am having trouble making leda_graph wrapper for GRAPH<vtype, etype> class. In leda_graph.hpp the wrapper is defined as template<class vtype, class etype> ... vertices(const leda::GRAPH<vtype, etype>& g) { do_something; } Given this definition the right (and only way i think) to invoke it by expression vertices<vtype, etype>(G) My problem is that all internal graph routines invoke the function by expression vertices(G) I would appreciate any ideas about how can i redirect vertices(G) to vertices<vtype, etype>(G) where vtype = vrec etype = erec G = leda::GRAPH<vrec, erec> I am afraid that i might have to rewrite a wrapper for specifically leda::GRAPH<vrec, erec>. Can this be avoided. Thanks sandeep

build system testing

Hello, I have noticed that work is going ahead to introduce CMake, and possibly SCons build systems alongside bjam. Does this not introduce an explosion in required testing combinations, and is this already being addressed? I fully appreciate the attraction of adding CMake, but would like to ensure we do not add too many build systems due to the potentially excessive requirement on library developer to install a plethora of tools, and perform an enormous amount of testing. I wonder if a static analysis tool might be able to help determine the consistency of bjam to the other build systems. Anyhow, I haven't seen much discussion about testing, and if it's not tested it's probably broken! (At least if I've written it!) Regards, Neil Groves

Hi, In code like this: std::string columns() const { return (boost::format("%7s, %7s, %7s, %7s") % "testCost" % "optimalEcr" % "efficiecyEcr" % "testCostEcr").str(); } it is very annoying to have to put () around the whole expression and then call .str() (Just imagine that we are creating a string on the fly to a function). Therefore I suggest that we add operator string_type() const { return str(); } to the interface of basic_format<>. Any comments? -Thorsten

The addition of pop_back() to path would allow the path to be built up without the vector. Given that path allows the path to be considered as a container of path elements, I would like to see this extended. A reverse iterator would be nice to step back from the given path up to the root. Pop_back would equate to stepping back to the parent directory and seems a useful feature. Given that there exists a function to remove the filename, this also seems to be relatively easy to implement (as an inlined function?) I have only recently discovered filesystem::path and, given my current project's requirements for directory manipulation, this is a fantastic help. Cheers Rob
