Sebastian, As Unicode characters that are not in page zero can require more than 32 bits to encode them [yes really] this means that one 'character' can be very long in UTF-8/16 encoding. It is even worse if you start looking at conceptual characters [graphemes] where you can easily have three characters make up a conceptual character. The only way I have found of handling this is to base the string functions on a proper Unicode character support library according to the Unicode spec. This means that you need character movement support, grapheme support, and sorting support. As I said to Phil, Rogier and I completed a Unicode character library for Release under boost, but never submitted it to Boost as we had intended to release it with a string library built on it, and never had time to do the second part of the work. Proto expresion construction question

Hi, I decided to try to write a small vector library with proto to test it. The following worked without problem (I will use extend further on but at the moment the as_expr are needed) proto::display_expr( proto::as_expr(x)+proto::as_expr(y)*proto::as_expr(z) , std::cout ); I then added struct fastvec_reduction_tag {}; struct sum_ {}; template<typename A> typename proto::result_of::make_expr< fastvec_reduction_tag // , MixedDomain , sum_ const , A const & >::type sum(A const &a) { return proto::make_expr<fastvec_reduction_tag/*, MixedDomain*/>(sum_(), boost::ref(a)); } Which work well proto::display_expr( sum(x) , std::cout ); And now, I would like to create a "function" dot(x,y) which expand to sum(x*y). The page 'users_guide\expression_construction\construction_utils.html' seems very complete, but hard to understand how to put it in practice, perhaps you could link it to some use in the example. Eigen vectors?

Hi all, I am very new to boost, and I thought I'd do some simple linear algebra examples to get started. I got some simple vector/matrix multiplications going with .../boost/numeric/ublas/vector.hpp and matrix.hpp. However, I didn't see any function in the documentation do find eigen values or to do factorizations or anything like that. Are those kinds of functions not included, or am I crazy and just missed them in docs? -- Thanks, David

Linear Algebra

I was trying to run one of the examples, and it was trying to include: #include <boost/numeric/bindings/atlas/clapack.hpp> I realized that I didn't have a bindings directory at all! After some looking around, I ended up here: http://news.tiker.net/dl/software/boost-bindings I un-tared it and put its 'bindings' folder in my .../boost/numeric folder. When I compiled the example again, I got hundreds of c:\program files\boost\boost_1_34_1\boost\numeric\bindings\traits\type_traits.hpp(26) : error C2894: templates cannot be declared to have 'C' linkage Am I going about this wrong? -- Thanks, David

[lambda] Lambda and operator overloading

Hi, I am trying to get this source code to work, no luck so far. It works ok if I use the non-lambda approach, but with lambda it fails to compile. Apparently, boost.lambda thinks I want the bitwise action when in fact I want the overloaded operator... Any ideas? Code is attached.

I'm wondering if the new thread safe implementation of signals guarantees atomic disconnects. line1: signal<void(), multi_threaded> sig; line2: thread t(sig); // Start a new thread which will emit "sig" line3: sig.connect(&some_func); line4: sig.disconnect(&some_func); line5: ... Am I guaranteed that some_func isn't called at line 5 or afterwards?
