Hi, 1. I just updated boost_1_35_0.qbk; since I don't know the quickbook format, I'd appreciate it if someone would look over it quickly to make sure I haven't broken anything. 2. I've removed an obsolete table of supported compilers from the Iostreams docs; I'd like to replace it with a link to the regression test reports for 1.35, but I don't know where that will be. [thread_safe_signals] new idea for thread-safe automatic connection management

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I came up with another idea for handling automatic connection management in thread_safe_signals (thread-safe version of boost.signals). I've attached some proof-of-concept code. The new code is supposed to enable going back to more of a boost::signals::trackable idea, where you inherit from a "trackable" base class to get automatic connection management. It still requires the trackable object be managed by a shared_ptr, but now the owning shared_ptr would not have to be explicitly passed to the slot for tracking. Also, it should make it possible to track connections to "this" when making connections in a constructor. Instead, the signal (or slot rather) would create a "tracker" object for each trackable object detected by visit_each. The tracker::lock_target() function returns a bool and a shared_ptr which can be in one of three states: bool is false: the trackable object has been destructed and its associated connections should be disconnected. bool is true, and shared_ptr is non-zero: the trackable object is alive and its associated connections should operate normally. The returned shared_ptr can be used to insure the trackable object doesn't destruct while the signal invocation is in progress. bool is true, and shared_ptr is zero: the trackable object is either constructed but not yet owned by a shared_ptr, or it is in the process of being destructed. In either case, the connection would be blocked until one of the other two states is reached. For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, I'll give a little background. The trackable/visit_each scheme of boost.signals was abandoned in thread_safe_signals since it disconnects the connections in the destructor of the trackable class. This isn't thread-safe, since the trackable destructor isn't called until after any derived class' destructors. The replacement idea was to allow shared_ptrs to be passed to slots for tracking. The shared_ptrs are assumed to own (directly or indirectly) any objects whose destruction should cause the slot to automatically disconnect. The slot keeps weak_ptr copies, and disconnects when any of the tracked weak_ptrs expire. The slot's weak_ptrs are all be converted to shared_ptrs whenever the slot is run, to insure the tracked objects don't destruct in the middle of signal invocation. Hi, what's the best practice in following scenario: m threads and n resources (each resource is protected by a mutex) thread x needs read/write access to resources (...i,j,k,..) threads y,z,... do access another subset of resources at the same time inorder to protected deadlocks I would do following in the code of the different threads (code executed by the threads are different): ... try_lock: // label unique_lock< mutex > lk1( mtx1, try_to_lock_t); unique_lock< mutex > lk4( mtx2, try_to_lock_t); unique_lock< mutex > lk7( mtx3, try_to_lock_t); if ( ! Very odd OS X Leopard crash

Hello list I got some code that have been working fine on Win/Linux/OS X Tiger for a while now. When I got my new OS X box I got Leopard, and when trying to build our project it built fine, but it failed to start at all when i made release mode compiles, but debug mode worked just fine. It seemed it didnt even get into my main().. After a number of hours I've narrowed it down to posix_time.hpp and strip.. [asio] Performance of 1 io_service per core vs. 1 io service run by thread pool

Hi everyone, Has there been a formal comparison between the performance of an application having one io_service per core compared to a single io service run by a thread pool? Currently I'm implementing a server that will be run on a machine with multiple processors. My main concerns are that in the case of a single io service run by a thread pool, handler functions are wrapped in a strand therefore causing (unnecessary) synchronization between the running threads. In the case of an io service per core design, unbalanced work from connections being serviced by one io service instance over the others will cause that one thread (presumed to be running on just one processor) to do most of the work leaving the other threads idle. I'm mainly interested in a pro-cons discussion on what the best approach should be. Currently, my implementation uses a single io service with a thread pool running handlers synchronized with a strand -- though the performance is OK, I'm looking at whether trying the other approach would be worth it. Hi, as it seems I've found a bug in the depth_first_search algorithm. I want to use it with my own ColorMap and a start vertex. The idea is to create a single -dev package that contains the following in /usr/lib: libboost_python-py24-gcc42-1_34_1.so libboost_python-py24-gcc42-1_34_1.a libboost_python-py25-gcc42-1_34_1.so libboost_python-py25-gcc42-1_34_1.a The -dev package contains an rtupdate script to create the following symlinks (also in /usr/lib): libboost_python-gcc42-1_34_1.so libboost_python-gcc42-1_34_1.a Does that sound right? This has the advantage that a Python extension can be build and packaged for either or both supported Python versions, albeit at the cost of changing the link line. Code that just needs the default version can use the undecorated form in the link line. [type_traits] check for default constructor?

Hello Boosters, how can I detect the presence of a default constructor in a certain class? Using the VC8 compiler, I tried several things but with limited success: has_trivial_constructor<T> only recognizes automatically created constructors, but not explicitely declared ones. has_nothrow_constructor<T> is too restrictive as it requires a throw() declaration. is_convertible<void, T> did not work either. Any ideas or pointers? Am I missing something? Lock-free atomic_shared_ptr<T>?

Porting lock-free data structures from Java is complicated by the fact that the implementations assume garbage collection. There are a few techniques available for dealing with manual memory management without locks, but they complicate the implementation of algorithms that are complex enough already. So I'm thinking about trying to implement an atomic_shared_ptr<T> along the lines of the interface for other atomics defined in http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2007/n2427.html but using shared_ptr<T> as a value type. The implementation I'm thinking of uses hazard pointers (http://erdani.org/publications/cuj-2004-12.pdf) and double-wide-cas (cmpxchg16b on x86-64). So I have three questions for this list: 1) Would there be interest in adding such a type to the Boost smart pointers? 2) Has someone already done this? 3) Is anyone already working on an implementation of atomic<T> from N2427? This bug is verifiable with Visual Studio 2005 SP1 as well as MinGW GCC 4.2.1. As an example, I have created a static std::map, which pairs a long with a boost::shared_ptr<>. This is the scenario where I first encountered the bug. The boost preprocessor definition BOOST_SP_USE_QUICK_ALLOCATOR is defined. When the program exists, the application crashes during deallocation of the shared_ptrs. Under Visual Studio 2005, MSVCR80d.dllcrashes during _free_dbg() (and likewise MSVCR80.dll crashes during _free()). If the map is made a regular member instead of a static member, the program exits properly. In addition, if the boost quick allocator is disabled, the program exits properly. In my testing, I have found the key type is irrelevant, and what the shared_ptr points to also does not matter. The issue is with the Quick Allocator and the runtime cleanup of static objects. In boost\detail\quick_allocator.hpp, put breakpoints in allocator_impl<size, align_>'s (4) mutex(), (5) alloc(), and (6) dealloc(). Run the program. (5) [alloc()] fires. We're constructing class1, which is constructing a shared_ptr. (4) [mutex()] fires, as alloc() calls mutex(). (1) [lightweight_mutex's ctor] fires, as mutex() constructs a static lightweight_mutex. (3) [scoped_lock's ctor] fires, as alloc() then constructs a scoped_lock from the static lightweight_mutex. (5), (4), and (3) then fire as we construct class2 (the static lightweight_mutex has already been constructed, so (1) doesn't run again.) (2) [lightweight_mutex's dtor] fires, as we exit main() and destroy the static lightweight_mutex. (6) [dealloc()] fires, as we exit main() and destroy the static map and its contained shared_ptrs. (4) [mutex()] fires, returning a reference to the destroyed static lightweight_mutex. (3) [scoped_lock's ctor] fires, which calls EnterCriticalSection() with a trashed CRITICAL_SECTION, which causes the program to crash. boost::bind does not trigger template instantiation

HI, in my spirit grammar file, I use boost::bind to bind a template function: boos::bind(&std::vector<uint32_t>::push_back)(my_vector, i); This compiles fine. However, since this is the only usage of std::vector<uint32_t>::push_back, this function is not instantiated and linker complains that this function is not defined. I could write a wrapper function around std::vector<uint32_t> to force its instantiation. My questions is: is there a more elegant solution in this scenario? Yingwei Zhang Powerset

root/more/index.html has disappeared, as has all of the content. That isn't acceptable. Even if much of the content is moved elsewhere, index.html has to continue to exist, so that users can continue to find the content. It is OK for some of the links on root/more/index.html to refer to the web site. It is OK to move content out of the release and into the web site if it is unlikely to be referenced in the process of actually using a release. Any of the content that is likely to used by users of a release must be restored. Releases have to be usable without Internet connectivity. Pages like the License information, How to report bugs, and FAQ have to be part of a release. --Beman

On the other hand, various factors practically dictate the use of language features that provide higher level abstractions than do C or older FORTRAN standards. These include increasingly complex physics models, numerical algorithms, and hardware--deep memory hierarchies, exponentially-increasing numbers of processors, and the advent of multi- and many-core processors and heterogeneous architectures. This workshop seeks to bring together practitioners and researchers in this growing field to `compare notes' on their work. The emphasis is on identifying specific problems impeding greater acceptance and widespread use of object-oriented programming in scientific computing; proposed and implemented solutions to these problems; and new or novel approaches, techniques or idioms for scientific and/or parallel computing. Presentations of work in progress are welcome. Hello all, I've prepared my patches to fix several links to the copyright files. There's a lot of changes, so I've put the patches on the web instead of attaching the patches. I've got three separate patches for fixing different errors. If there are no objections I'll commit them to trunk and release in a few days. First patch is for headers which link to the non-existant LICENSE-1.0. It touches the date time, thread and string algorithm libraries: http://unordered.nfshost.com/x/copyright1.patch The next one fixes links 'http:#www.boost.org/LICENSE_1_0.txt' which seems to be a search and replace error when converting C++ header comments to python. In fact Joel and I are using the floating point classification and sign-bit routines in SpiritV2 (for both, parsing and generation), and it turned out to be a huge time saver for us. * Did you try to use the library? With what compiler? Did you have any problems? Yes, SpiritV2 is using it. We tried with different versions of gcc, intel and msvc (mainly on windows) * How much effort did you put into your evaluation? Essentially no extra time. I'm reporting what I've learned while writing the Spirit code. * Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain? Using this library helped me to understand some of the problems in this domain. Hi John, I'm using the Math Toolkit in a statistics app. It works great; you have have done a fantastic job. I minor suggestion: Why not let pdf and cdf accept infinity and negative infinity when the corresponding limits exist? --Johan
