Time series: sparse/dense containers for use with non-time-indexed data?

I have had a look at the Time Series docs and it looks like a worthwhile library, though I have not done anything recently with time-indexed data that could use it. I have, however, had to deal with sparse vs. dense data structure decisions with other index types, e.g. integers; this leads me to wonder what ties this library specifically to _time_ series. One of the elements of this library is a pair of containers that have a common interface but store their contents either in a dense or a sparse structure. I wonder whether it would be worth generalising those containers to make them applicable to non-time applications - and to make them as close to standard library containers as possible. One way to approach this would be to think about how a std::map-like interface can be presented to a std::vector, and/or how a std::vector-like interface can be presented to a std::map. My motivation is that I sometimes find myself with code like this: typedef std::map<int,T> T_container; // I'm not sure yet if this is best stored in a sparse T_container tt; // (map) or dense (vector) structure, but by making // it a typedef I can easily change it later. Of course, when I change the typedef from map<int,T> to vector<T> I discover that there are plenty of other places where I have to change the code; for example I have to add or remove '->second' wherever I dereference an iterator. How about: dense_map<int,T> : provides the interface of std::map<int,T> (or a subset of it), implemented using a vector. Needs to grow the vector when something is inserted. sparse_vector<T> : provides the interface of std::vector<T> (or a subset of it), implemented using a map. Needs an iterator that can point to gaps between the map elements. How close do the sparse and dense time series containers come to this? Regards, Phil.

Hi, here are my quick thoughts on this library. I don't have time for much more than this... sorry it isn't more thorough. * What is your evaluation of the design? I guess my first impression was "way too many concepts", but after a while it all starts to make sense. It seems pretty flexible what you can do with it. It looks quite daunting at first to write new series classes, but that probably isn't going to be that common a task. Writing new algorithms seems pretty straightforward and I wouldn't mind trying to add some new ones. * What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library? I don't have a current use for it, but I can see how a lot of people would! * Did you try to use the library? With what compiler? Did you have any problems? cygwin only has boost 1.33 still, and I didn't have time to get 1.34.1, so I was missing too much stuff to compile the library. * How much effort did you put into your evaluation? A glance? A quick reading? In-depth study? About an hour reading the docs and looking at the examples. * Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain? More or less. I do a lot of data analyis with std::vector and legacy C libraries like clapack. Here are some random comments: -I don't like the names "daily", "weekly", etc, because they give the impression that the library is only meant for daily data. I think it would be better just to define a template stride<> inheriting from mpl::int_<>, so you could write instead something like dense_series<double, stride<7> > and the meaning of 7 would depend on the context of the program. -I am confused by the statement in the docs that "A time series is a series of data points, sampled at regular intervals". If that's true, then what does it mean to use a floating point offset? Doesn't that mean I can use irregular intervals too? I was thinking it would be natural to have an FFT algorithm for a dense time series, but that would only make sense if it was sampled at regular intervals. I guess a dense series always has an integral offset type, so it would make sense there. -I worry a little about the dual interfaces for ordered_inserter, maybe it should be split into two classes? Especially for the output iterator usage, I think people would frequently try to use it with std::copy and then forget to call commit(), causing silent errors. Maybe that's just something the user will have to get used to. Another option could be to use a new class called ordered_insert_iterator with a shared_ptr pImpl setup, so that the last temporary object would call commit() from its destructor after the algorithm completed. In that case, problems would be caused if people created non-temporary objects, but I think in practice, in the majority of cases, the output iterator would be used by creating a temporary object and passing it to std::copy or whatever. -I think invert_elements() should have a different name. For one thing, there is confusion with invert_heaviside(), which is completely unrelated, and for another, this name could also work fine to describe a function which multiplied every element by -1. I can't think of a decent one, though. * Do you think the library should be accepted as a Boost library? Given that I didn't have time to look into this much more, I'm not sure how seriously my opinion can be taken, but I do vote yes. -Lewis

SVN and filename case?

Is there a policy about filename case within boost? At least windows does not distinguish between upper and lower case. So a developer using windows might too easily miss this fact which can result in code that compiles on windows and not on unix. So I'd expect that there is a policy e.g. requiring all lower case filenames. In my opinion this also should be checked by a pre-commit hook. Roland aka speedsnail

The Boost Subversion repository is back online. You are strongly advised to remove any previous checkouts from the Subversion repository and to check out a clean copy from Subversion. The MIME types problem has been fixed. I hope this also fixes the issues that we have been seeing with TortoiseSVN. Please report back whether it works or not. Timeseries review

Just doing through it now. It would be very useful. Some quick questions and comments based on very brief perusal. 1. How does one handle missing (time-series) values in this framework? So, for example, I have set up my time-series with a certain discretization and then at some point(s) along the series, I receive no data, what would be an elegant way of dealing with this situation in the library. We would also need a policy to ignore or interpolate the values of missing data. 2. I like the resampling support (Coarse_grain and Fine_grain) 3. There is also a typo in the synopsis of subrange: sub_range( const Range2& r ); should be sub_range( const ForwardRange2& r );

Just in case anyone's not aware of this, svn will let you change the commit messages for old commits. The command is something like svn propset svn:log --revprop -r 12345 "Frob the foobar" . By default, however, this is disabled by the pre-revprop-change hook. This chould be set up so that e.g. only the person responsible for a commit could subsequently change its log message. Organization idea: separate libraries in our SVN

[I thought I wrote a message similar to this a few years ago, but I can't seem to find it on GMane. Anyway, this is a good time to re-introduce it since Subversion allows directory manipulations.] The current layout of the Boost material in our SCM system is the same as the final archives. That does not necessarily have to be the case. Since we put emphasis on distinct libraries within Boost as far as maintenance is concerned, maybe we should enforce in the SCM layout. You know how, when we look at a potential library, the library is in an archived folder with sub-folders mirroring the files' places in the final layout. The trial library would have its own root "boost" and "libs" (and any other) sub-directories. I suggest that all the current libraries be set up like that, in a common directory holding all the libraries. This common directory would be the trunk. At release time, the contents of each library's directory are merged into a release directory. If only one library directory has a particular file object, it's copied as-is. If multiple libraries have a commonly-named file object, we have an error if at least one of them is a file. Otherwise, the commonly-named directories are merged using this algorithm recursively. (A particular leaf file should only be part of one library.) So the new trunk would be like: * trunk/ ** General/ ** any/ ... ** crc/ ... ** filesystem/ ... ** math-quaterion/ ** math-common_factor/ ... ** quickbook/ ... ** utility-general/ ** utility-enable_if/ ... ** wave/ ** wave-tool/ ... Note that the tools get parallel library directories. The "General" folder holds our license, logos, and any other non-library common files. Libraries of the same category don't have to have distinctive namespaces (and sub-folders of the boost/ header directory); they can be merged in the final product, but maintained separately in the SCM system. (The existing I/O, math, and numeric namespaces/directories are sort of like this, but now we can refine them further, and do stuff like put all the Boost container classes under one sub-namespace/directory.) While the final users get a merged archive, Boost developers would have to include each library's header separately in their compiler options. This could be useful because it will tell us about each library's dependencies on other Boost libraries. I think Subversion has some sort of symbolic-file-link support. Maybe with that, we could create a directory parallel to the trunk that represents an already merged archive. (It would have to be read-only, of course.) It could be updated with a commit script watching the trunk directory. * master-level/ ** trunk/ ** synthetic-archive/ <- read-only; maybe at separate website ** branches/ ** tags/ Something I like about this system is that it lets me know exactly how many libraries we have. (There's so many and it's hard to keep track sometimes.) Furthermore, now that libraries can be safely enumerated enables all sorts of automatic processing. Using SVN properties on each library's folders, and various sub-objects, would enhance said processing. (I think that properties and their changes generally can be version-controlled.) We could have the commit script make sure that the appropriate file objects have the properties we need. * The master list of libraries can be script-generated. Descriptions of each library and their original authors can be stored as SVN properties in each library's folder. * The current maintainers for each library can be stored as an SVN property. A regression suite that access SVN can then send notifications to the right people. (A master list of maintainers can also be generated for the final archive.) * There can be a property listing which sibling libraries a particular library (directly) depends on. This can be used by a script to isolate one library for extraction and take all it needs for the ride. An extraction can be in my separate library directories form or in a fused archive form. Furthermore, when actually built, you'll discover any missing sibling library dependencies. * Did you know that you can mix-and-match various revisions of items in the same directory? Exploiting this could reduce the need of branching in order to isolate breaking changes. Let's say that we start out at revision r25. The Filesystem library is changed and checked-in at r30. All the other libraries stay at r25 until an explicit update bumps everything to r30. (Subversion's commits do _not_ sneak in an update to uninvolved file objects.) Unknowingly, r27 introduced a bug in the CRC library which breaks Filesystem. The Filesystem maintainer could temporarily lock his/her copy of the CRC library folder to r26 until the bug is fixed! Taken to the extreme, the release manager can check out the copy of the trunk's HEAD, back-step any libraries as necessary to their individual last-known-good(-enough) revision, and then run the merge script for the release's archive. * For each library's documentation directory, the directory could have a property describing the primary file. Each documentation file could have a property describing build directions, if needed. * For each library's testing directory, each test file could have a property describing which kind of test (compile, compile-fail, run, run-fail, etc.) it is. Jamfiles don't necessarily have to be included; they could be synthesized from the properties while the merge script builds an archive. And if we move to a different build system than Jam, then the properties could be used for the new system. * For the mandatory source files, a property could be added for distinct execution closures. As far as I know, this property wouldn't be needed except for three files in Boost.Test. Those files each include a "main" function, and so can't be mixed with each other or all other mandatory source. Each one of those files could have a distinct execution closure tag, which puts it in a separate "src" subdirectory, while all the other mandatory source files leave that property blank and all go into a main "src" subdirectory when merged. (I know we don't keep a root-level "src" directory; but with SCM separation of libraries and a merge script, we can!) Any special compilation directions could be placed in a property to be transfered to a Jamfile (or successor) for our build system. (Obviously this isn't 100% recommended since a user could use his/her own IDE to compile a source file and miss the property's directions.) There is a _one-time_ cost to separate each library/tool from the existing merged archive to distinct directories. That might take a while, but advantages of a separated system should be worth it. (It can be done in piecemeal; keep everything in the "General" directory and separate the libraries/tools out one at a time. We should probably do the leaf libraries [0 sibling dependencies] first. Actually, we should start with Boost.Config; it should have low dependencies, but a lot of other libraries depend on it.) I've heard that Windows, when moving the contents of one directory into another, will (recursively?) merge the contents of commonly-named directories. If that's accurate, then a Windows user could temporarily be a release manager until the merge script is made. I don't really know how to script, but hopefully a merge would be simple enough to write that the Windows-user workaround wouldn't be needed. (Macs use overwrite semantics, being consistent in not distinguishing between file objects based on the source's and destination's is-directory flags.) I know that there's a lot of automation. Just wondering, but can we set up the SVN commit script to verify the file with our inspect program before a commit is allowed? No doubt folks will be greatly annoyed by this at first, but at least we should gradually get those inspection-failures fixed that way :-) John.

new proposal: boost-config

Hi, Suppose two systems, a Fedora based on gcc 4.1 and a Debian based on gcc 4.2, both sporting Boost 1.35.0 built with --layout=system, for simplicity. Now Joe User writes his app on the Fedora system and links Boost.DateTime using the familiar -lboost_date_time switch. He builds the app and tries it on both his Fedora system and the friend's Debian one. What is going to happen? BTW, the user is a free software developer and his app is going to be ported also to other Microsoft, UNIX and popular embedded operating systems, where Boost has been built mixing --layout=system and --layout=versioned. Now he faces the problem of linking to the Boost library of interest. How he is supposed to solve the problem? This is a new summary of the binary and source portability problems that current build system is inflicting on the Boost libraries. My proposal is: 1) dump the --layout= thing, versioned/decorated sonames are always used 2) provide symlinks like the following, when appropriate: /usr/lib/libboost_date_time-gcc42-1_34_1.so -> libboost_date_time-gcc42-1_34_1.so.1.34.1 /usr/lib/libboost_date_time-gcc42-d-1_34_1.so -> libboost_date_time-gcc42-d-1_34_1.so.1.34.1 /usr/lib/libboost_date_time-gcc42-mt-1_34_1.so -> libboost_date_time-gcc42-mt-1_34_1.so.1.34.1 /usr/lib/libboost_date_time-gcc42-mt-d-1_34_1.so -> libboost_date_time-gcc42-mt-d-1_34_1.so.1.34.1 3) provide also these symlinks, if desired: /usr/lib/libboost_date_time.so -> libboost_date_time-gcc42-1_34_1.so /usr/lib/libboost_date_time-d.so -> libboost_date_time-gcc42-d-1_34_1.so /usr/lib/libboost_date_time-mt.so -> libboost_date_time-gcc42-mt-1_34_1.so /usr/lib/libboost_date_time-mt-d.so -> libboost_date_time-gcc42-mt-d-1_34_1.so 4) add more decorations as required. e.g. Python version to Boost.Python library name. This way multiple Boost.Python libraries, every built with a different Python version, could coexist on the same system. 5) provide a program, say boost-config, that may be invoked to find the right build parameters for a given library, toolset and variant(s). some examples (suppose default compiler is gcc 4.0, the one used to build Boost): $ boost-config --name=DateTime --ldflags -lboost_date_time-gcc40-1_34_1 $ boost-config --name=DateTime --toolset=gcc-4.1 --variant=mt,d --ldflags -lboost_date_time-gcc41-mt-d-1_34_1 $ boost-config --name=Threads --toolset=gcc-4.2 --ldflags -lboost_threads-gcc42-mt-1_34_1 $ boost-config --name=DateTime --toolset=gcc-4.2 --variant=python-2.5 --ldflags Error: unknown variant python-2.5 for the given library $ boost-config --name=Python --variant=python-2.4 --ldflags -lboost_python-gcc40-python24-1_34_1 $ boost-config --name=Python --toolset=gcc-4.2 --variant=python --cxxflags -I/usr/include/python if toolset is omitted, the default system compiler is used, if any (e.g. cc/c++ under linux), otherwise an error is reported. Point 1) is really optional. In case --layout is kept, the subsequent points would be related only to --layout=versioned and --layout=system should be documented as source of any sort of portability issues. Point 2) is required only on UNIX systems where GNU ld is used, it might have not sense with other linkers. Every linker has its own story. Point 3) is applicable only where 2) is and would be handy only when source portability is not an issue, to the user discretion. Big warning about source portability should be placed nearby its documentation. Point 4) would allow packaging Boost.Python on distributions in which multiple versions of Python may be available. Point 5) is the way to the complete source portability, at least across sane systems (read, probably not Windows/MSVC). Note that if Boost is built using a compiler different from the one asked to boost-config, the linker will complain about the inexistent library. It would be easy to make boost-config extract allowed parameter combinations from an XML file built by Boost.Build at build time. That's all, good night. I'm wondering if anyone has started a statistical analysis library at all? Something I might be interesting in starting if not. It could include features such as: sample mean, alpha-trimmed mean, weighted-mean, geometric-mean, harmonic-mean, mode, median, midrange. mean deviation, sample std deviation, RMS, sample range, interquartile range higher order sample moments maximum likelihood estimators (and other estimators for various distributions), confidence intervals, hypothesis testing linear regression, ANOVA even Any interested in such a lib? (i think i saw a probability lib somewhere, it could build on that as well). Chris

Testing tools location.

NOTE: This is not question about the whole testing & release management stuff on that /other/ thread. Since I'm going to be mucking about with Buildbot this weekend I'm wondering about where to put things in the SVN repo. Instead of continuing to shove stuff into the boost-root/tools tree, I'd rather move some of the testing infrastructure tools onto their own tree as we did with the beta web site. The goal, as with the web site, is to make it easier to develop without getting in the way of the release content. In particular because like the web site, testing doesn't follow the same release schedule as the libraries. The obvious location I have in mind is a top level testing dir, with subdirs as needed: svn/testing svn/testing/buildbot svn/testing/reports ... Thoughts? ...I'll assume this is OK after a short time. [x-files] the code's out there...

Dear fellow Boosters, There is lots of useful, Boost-worthy utility code out there: Implementation details of existing / upcoming / (maybe even) proposed and rejected libraries that could stand alone, code on private hard disks never brought up for review, additions to existing libraries, etc. Fact is, that for small submissions the administrative overhead of (even) a formal (fast-track) review can be too high for developers' decency. Just imagine someone allocating five fast-track slots at once just for factoring out some unrelated bits of code from an existing library. So, why not group a bunch of unrelated utilities into a set of "Boost X-Files" and have them reviewed as a single library? It's completely non-intrusive to the review process and could seriously increase its efficiency. Like the idea? As a start, I stuffed my (tested and documented) "Boost candidate bits and pieces" into a common directory in the vault: http://tinyurl.com/35vlvb Feedback and more X-files welcome, of course. Improving --layout=system

I think its a big win for anyone who uses --layout=system. At present, when you build Boost with --layout=system, you end up with libraries called libboost_xyz-mt.so that have this same value set at their ELF SONAME (this is the shared library version number embedded into the library itself). The problem with these libraries is that you can never have multiple versions of them installed side-by-side in the same place. Go too far down this road and you end up with Windows-style 'DLL hell'. If instead the BOOST_VERSION is appended to the target name as it is with --layout=versioned, you end up with SONAME'd libraries that can live side-by-side with earlier/later versions of Boost. Now when you link applications using -lboost_date_time-mt, the linker records the dependency on the library's SONAME, which is libboost_date_time_mt.so.1.35.0. No other name will satisfy this runtime dependency. As a result, you can install the (hypothetical) Boost 1.36.0libs into the same directory and old applications will continue to pick up the *.so.1.35.0 libs correctly, while new applications built when the symlink points to the new library versions will pick up *.so.1.36.0. This is how Boost.Build v1 handled --layout=system and I believe this is the most correct and desirable behavior for platforms that support versioned shared libraries. The new important features: * New global_fun predefined key extractor. * Added iterator_to facility. * Included support for non-standard allocators such as those of Boost.Interprocess, which makes multi_index_containers placeable in shared memory. Don't miss example #12 at the examples section, which fully exercises this new capacity. * New versions of modify and modify_key with rollback, as described in the tutorial. * Indices provide the new cbegin, cend and, when applicable, crbegin and crend member functions, in accordance with the latest drafts of the next revision of the C++ standard. [Accumulators]multiple statistic instances

I am trying to create an IIR filter (see e.g., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IIR) using the delay buffer implementation recently discussed. To do this I need two delay buffers for my filter, one for the samples and one for the computed outputs. I have tried templating my delay buffer with a discrimating type, but I can't get more than one buffer instantiated. ie the following creates only one buffer instantation. accumulator_set<int, stats< tag::delay<>, tag::delay<my_other_delay> > > acc( tag::delay<>::cache_size = 3, tag::delay<my_other_delay>::cache_size = 4 ); Is this worth perservering with? any hints? or would it be better to wait for the next version of accumulators?

Cast free NULLs in algorithms

Hello, I have something like: class A; boost::array<A*,10> the_array; std::fill( the_array.begin(), the_array.end(), NULL ); Which wont compile (at least under Visual Studio 2005) without a cast for NULL... I've had this problem before and decided to try to find an easy cast free expressive solution for it. After a few minutes I came up with: namespace detail { struct null_ptr_impl { template< typename T > operator T* () const { return static_cast<T*>(0); } }; } // end namespace detail const detail::null_ptr_impl null_ptr; std::fill( the_array.begin(), the_array.end(), null_ptr ); Does this exist somewhere already? [Multi-index] questions on max_size, incomplete docs, and common code

I'm trying out a multi-indexed container that uses a set-like (ordered_unique) interface and a vector-like (random_access) interface. Each interface has a "max_size" member function. Could they ever return different values? Some functions, like (member) swap and clear, have no definitions given. It seems like the author assumes that we'll assume that the undefined functions work like those in STL. But I'll prefer something more precise, to (1) confirm the exact semantics and (2) know the exact complexity these functions may have. (I noticed this problem while I was trying to define the complexity of my wrapper class's member functions.) Some member functions, like the aforementioned "max_size" and "clear," seem to be same for all index styles. Could those be re-factored into the main class, like "get_allocator" is? Hi guys, In the code below, there are three severe bugs: 1. The addition of the #pragma warning instead of using the localtime_s() and gmtime_s() functions which are similar to the localtime_r() and gmtime_r() functions (the parameters are swapped.) Thus, if _MSC_VER >= 1400, you need a new implementation with the "safe" versions. 2. The documentation says: //! requires a pointer to a user created std::tm struct because the function is expected to WRITE in that buffer. At this time, it does not do so and if you don't use the returned pointer, the pointer to the user defined tm struct is useless. You are missing a couple of asterisks in there! *result = *std::localtime(t); 3. In a multi-thread environment, which you detect with some BOOST_THREAD_ENABLED flag, you must use a scoped lock to protect these calls. Lock, call, return is what I'd expect to see here (is it prohibited for the c_time.hpp file to include the thread lock mechanism?) I hope I will see these three bugs fixed in a future version. [Accumulators] Passing construction arguments to dependent statistics

Given recent discussion on Time Series and Accumulators, I thought I would have a go at implementing a FIR filter for Accumulators, and have run into a problem. I decided to do this in two parts; first create a (reusable) delay statistic (similar to tail) that provides a history buffer for the signal and then create the filter (similar to tail_variate) , that will depend on the delay buffer. I have created the delay buffer with a length determined by a cache_size argument. This works well. I am now creating the filter, which has a "coefficents" argument to set the filter coefficients. I would like to pass the size of the coefficients list as the cache_size argument to the underlying delay buffer. Is this possible?

[thread_safe_signals] assertion failure (patch)

There's a little bug in member function nolock_force_unique_connection_list which causes an assertion inside nolock_cleanup_connections because the _shared_state.unique() is false because the local variable newState also references _shared_state.
