Limitation of liability in Boost License

Hi all IANAL but AFAIK the Boost License's disclaimer of warranty and liability is invalid under German law (irrespective whether the licensee is a consumer or not). I'd guess that similar can be said about some other jurisdictions in Europe or elsewhere. I'm curious, is this a matter of concern for anyone, in particular for corporate contributors? I suspect that If we were study this issue in depth, there would be very few examples of "public" macros that would be superior to their alternatives. "Non-public" internal macros, shur, the library author should be allowed to explore the creative use of macros all they want.

I would like to hear peoples thought on a library i uploaded to the vault and maybe get it submitted for review. the libraries name is the EventHandler library, it can be found in the vault under home / Generic Programming / EventHandler.zip i find it simple to use (well i wrote it so i should) but effective at adding almost .net style events to classes

ScopeExit

Hello. This won't be a proper review of the library, but more a point of view of an average Boost user. ScopeExit seems like a very nice utility, but, I don't think I could ever use it because of two things: 1. Dependence on boost.typeof. I would like the native typeof keyword, but, boost.typeof too much stresses compile type and a requirement of type registration is so unergonomic that makes boost.typeof a very nice and powerful demo, but not a useful utility for every day use. 2. Unusual syntax, both for me and someone who would later work on my code. Using preprocessor sequence and having BOOST_SCOPE_EXIT_END after {} braces looks so unnatural in C++. If, by any chance, my vote will be counted, I'll vote no for this utility until those two items are resolved. I understand maybe it's not possible to do so, but, I would rather not have it in Boost then.

How to claim copyright (and potentially claim prior art?)

Bristow 2007. but I then realised that this would imply that it was written in 2007, so if this date was to be used to squash some of the absurd software patent claims - for example see http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-6183437.html and many other comments on this, an issue that has re-surfaced again recently. I see an important side effect of software leaders like Boost is to preempt any attempt by companies to claim (or even threaten to claim) bogus patent rights by providing clear evidence of prior art. Do Boosters have any views on how we could or should be able to show date of writing? Is there going to be an archive of old releases by which we could establish a writing date? Or better is there going to be an archive of stuff *before* it gets reviewed and released (often at least a year earlier in the past and I doubt if it will get much less than a year even if we smarten up our act). Some of these claims go back a long time - a decade or so. Does the copyright claim date have any relevance to this? Should I write // Copyright Paul A. All seemed adequate for a small macro. Initially, my thought was, here we go again, another macro utility. I didnt like the "FOR_EACH" macro that got accepted into boost late last year either. In my mind, this "ScopeExit" macro would have to be extrodinarly useful for me to use it in my code. I don't mind that library authors use macros internally, but for "public" code, and a full blown boost library, I'm not convinced. * What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library? I wont be using it. However, thats just me, I dont like macros. * Did you try to use the library? With what compiler? Did you have any problems? No. Just read the documentation. * How much effort did you put into your evaluation? A glance? A quick reading? In-depth study? Less than 1 hour. * Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain? Yes. And finally, every review should answer this question: * Do you think the library should be accepted as a Boost library? Be sure to say this explicitly so that your other comments don't obscure your overall opinion. No. I fear that this macro, along with the "FOR_EACH" macro, that boost developers are warming up to "macros" in general. We should stick to standard syntax, even if the standard syntax is verbose and ugly. Macros always come back to bite you. My no vote is sole based on my dislike of macros. Macros internal to a library are fine, but for a public interface, I'm not persuaded.

[random]: some issues

Hello, I came across several issues regarding the [random] - library: Firstly, at least occassionally the documentation is not fully in synch with the class headers, or at least not in my eyes. Consider the synopsis for variate_generator<>, it misses the "distribution" - member functions (and by the way led me at first sight to use something else because I needed access to the distribution). The functions are mentioned in the description, but IMHO they should definitely also be listed in the synopsis. Secondly, for lognormal_distribution the return-type for the const member functions mean and sigma is both a reference to non-const RealType, which of course causes a compile-time error on use of these functions (const member functions trying to return reference to non-const data member). This applies to both the docs and the code. Since I cannot imagine a single situation where this function declaration would make sense I suppose it is a mistake, and the return type should be a RealType by value (or ref-to-const), as do the other distributions ? Thirdly, for the distributions the template parameter "UniformRandomNumberGenerator" is in my eyes underdocumented; I tried the normal_distribution using mt19937 as parameter, just to find out it results in an assert being fired and that apparently a uniform distribution with range 0-1 is required. This again is not obvious, since the documentation lacks a clear mentioning of that (besides the innocent column 'explanation' in the distributions table - at least I didn't find anything; apologize if I have overlooked it), and the template parameter name is also not very descriptive, I could not read from it that the range has to be 0-1 (and with the min / max members of generators it is even less clear to me why it cannot be made use of those to delimit the range automatically). [BGL] Tools for planar graph testing/embedding/drawing in the vault

Hi all, I've implemented a small suite of tools for dealing with planar graphs and would like to add it to the BGL. The core of this suite is built around the recent Boyer-Myrvold algorithm for planarity testing/embedding. (see http://www.emis.de/journals/JGAA/accepted/2004/BoyerMyrvold2004.8.3.pdf) A graph is planar if it can be drawn in two-dimensional space with no edge crossings. A graph is non-planar exactly when it contains a subgraph that is an expansion of one of two special subgraphs, called "Kuratowski subgraphs." This face makes it possible not only to detect that a graph is non-planar, but to prove it's non-planar by isolating one of these subgraphs. In addition to the obvious applications to graph-drawing, planar graphs are often simpler to deal with in optimization problems, and many problems that are NP-complete (most likely requiring exponential time to solve) have efficient algorithms or better approximation guarantees for the special case of planar graphs. The functions I've implemented allow one to: - Test a graph for planarity. - Embed a planar graph in the plane. - Find and verify a minimal Kuratowski subgraph in a non-planar graph. - Create a straight-line drawing of a planar graph (a mapping of vertices to points in the plane such that all edges can be drawn with straight line segments). - Traverse the faces of a planar graph using generic visitor event points in the spirit of the BGL depth-first and breadth-first search algorithms. With appropriate visitors, this traversal can be used to count the faces of a planar graph, triangulate a planar graph, or find a dual of a planar graph, among other things. With a few caveats about the efficiency of vertex index maps, etc. all of the functions above run in linear time with respect to the number of vertices in the graph, which is optimal. I've put two sets of files in the vault under Home/Algorithms/graph: the first is called planar_graphs.zip (also planar_graphs.tar.gz) and contains the .hpp files, the documentation, and the examples. The second is called planar_graph_testing.zip (also planar_graph_testing.tar.gz) and contains over 1000 test graphs and a small program that can be compiled to give an example of how these planar graph tools can be used. [boost/limits.hpp]bug? missing CHAR_BIT

When just: #include <boost/limits.hpp> is just preprocessed, the output contains no definition of CHAR_BIT; yet, it's used (although within a #if..#endif) within limits.hpp. Limits.hpp does contain: #ifdef BOOST_NO_LIMITS # include <boost/detail/limits.hpp> #else # include <limits> #endif which makes me wonder, since CHAR_BIT is used below this code, whether the authors expected CHAR_BIT to be defined at this point? BTW, CHAR_BIT is defined in system header, limits.h. The reason it hasn't caused a problem so far was explained in another post: http://archives.free.net.ph/message/20070820.174844.ac9e6b8d.en.html

[Ann] Variadic Templates

Hello Fellow Boosters, I have just completed implementing support for "Variadic Templates" in GCC. Variadic templates are C++ templates that can accept any number of "extra" template arguments, just like a function that uses C-style varargs (with "...") can accept any number of extra arguments. Unlike C varags, however, variadic templates work both for class templates and function templates, and are completely type-safe. Why do variadic templates matter for Boost? For one thing, they will allow us to eliminate the use of preprocessor metaprogramming in many, many places throughout the library. This can simplify our library implementations drastically, and eliminate those annoying "caps" on the number of arguments one can use (ever tried to use bind () with 11 arguments?). Beyond that, variadic templates are just plain fun, and there are undoubtedly a great number of metaprogramming applications. Here are a few teasers to illustrate what variadic templates can do: We can implement an MPL-like type vector with one line of code: template<typename... Types> struct vector { }; The "ellipsis" means that we can pack any number of arguments into the "template parameter pack" called Types. Of course, we can do the same for MPL's vector_c: template<typename T, T... Values> struct vector_c { }; Unimpressed? Here's an implementation of tuple that accepts any number of element types: template<typename... Values> class tuple; template<> class tuple<> { }; template<typename Head, typename... Tail> class tuple<Head, Tail...> : private tuple<Tail...> { protected: Head m_head; }; We're using recursion to build up the tuple. The ellipsis operator works with partial specializations, too, packing together "extra" arguments at the end. Of course, all of this would be useless if we couldn't write some of the other tuple operations, like operator==: inline bool operator==(const tuple<>&, const tuple<>&) { return true; } template<typename T, typename... In the (near) future, I hope to introduce variadic templates support into the "official" GCC, but I need your help! Are variadic templates worthwhile? Will they help us build better, cleaner Boost libraries in the future? Should we bring variadic templates to the C++ committee, to enable better implementations of TR1 components and eliminate the need for much of the preprocessor metaprogramming we do today? [Probability] version 0.2.3 released

In order to better motivate the need for the Boost Probability library, I have updated the documentation, which is accessible at http://biology.nmsu.edu/software/probability/ Although this constitutes a new release, the only difference is in documentation. As a result, the contents of v0.2.2 in the Boost Vault still reflect exactly the most recent release and I haven't uploaded a new copy. The new motivational example is taken from the problem of ascertaining the long-term trend of global climate. One database used to assess this is available from the NOAA National Climate Data Center (http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/ghcn-monthly/index.php) It contains monthly data for thousands of stations worldwide, in many cases for decades. Today's version, for example, contains 590,543 records of mean temperature. A typical likelihood calculation evaluating a model of climate would involve a product of likelihoods across all of these records, almost certainly yielding a result on the order of 10^{-600,000} or less. Such numbers cannot be handled using typical floating point representations, so specialized solutions of some form are required. The natural method is to accumulate the sum of logarithms of likelihoods, rather than the product of likelihoods, across the dataset. This keeps the values within suitable bounds, but requires keeping track of the fact that different types of values (probabilities, likelihoods, and log likelihoods) are being used throughout a typical program. If these are all represented using native types, such as double, it is easy to lose track of the fact that they have different semantics. A real solution of this problem would include modules taking care of calculating the probability of each individual data record and modules taking care of accumulating that information across the records. The problem is complex enough that each of these responsibilities would realistically be divided across many units and it would not be unreasonable to expect development to be divided among many programmers. In such situations it is all too easy to lose track of what semantics apply to a specific value when the only information available in the code is the data type (e.g., double) which provides little help and some (perhaps untrustworthy) comments that may or may not be read and in any case cannot affect the compiler. Using the Probability library, one can encode the exact semantics using the type system in a way that lends itself to generic programming. The resulting clarity, safety, and maintainability is retained regardless of how large the code base becomes and how the operations are distributed across modules and/or programmers. As a result of these features, I feel that this library makes a significant contribution to solving a well-defined set of problems that occur in certain types of scientific programming and modeling. I hope you will take a serious look at its capabilities and provide me with further feedback. I am especially interested in improving the portability of the code and need testers with access to compilers other than g++. I look forward to your comments, suggestions, and general discussion. Alexander, I understand your gripes about the lambda syntax, but to be perfectly frank, I have never used lambda expressions in combination with the scope guard (which is maybe why your arguments have so far been unable to convince me). My clean up actions tend to be trivial function calls or functors that don't require any lambda syntax. Moreover, I am convinced any lambda expression wouldn't get through our code inspection for exactly the reasons you bring up. However, I fear that I will face similar resistance to your syntax. It's hard to argue that a macro with (seemingly) un-typed arguments, a code block between curly braces followed by another macro, look anything like C++ (and arguing its correctness based on a future language standard probably won't do me much good either). I think the scope guard functionality is an essential tool for many programmers so its syntax needs to be accessible to the masses. I was doing some cleanup on the boost Trac this morning - trying to make sure that bugs were getting to the right people, and I have bugs that I want to assign to libraries (and maintainers), but the maintainers are not users on the Trac system. I would appreciate it if all library maintainers would create accounts for themselves on Trac. Instructions can be found here: <http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/>. [Intrusive] More compile time parameters

Hello, (my version of the library is intrusive.2007-03-04.zip. Is there a more recent version?) I have three suggestions: 1) The containers uses a modulo operation to map the hash value range into the bucket index domain. When using a bucket size that is an order of 2, the excess cost of the div instruction is unneeded. This was a critical issue for me. There can be a new templated type parameter for specifying a functor that takes the hash output value and the bucket size as inputs and outputs the bucket index. The default type of this template parameter can simply be std::modulus. 2) Each container stores the bucket size. This is too an unneeded excess in certain circumstances. If the containers had a (optional) templated constant parameter that determined its bucket size, then the container memory footprint can be reduced at the expense of bloating the code segments with multiple instantiations. This memory saving is crucial when deploying numerous small hash container objects. This new templated constant parameter has interface ramifications. We would require two specializations of the container class: the run-time bucket size specialization is what we have today; for the compile-time bucket size container, the constructors would not have "size_type buckets_len" parameters. 3) Now, if we add another templated type parameter for specifying a functor that takes the object 'this' pointer as input and outputs the memory address of the bucket array, then we can reduce the memory cost of each container to zero. Time Series review results

I am pleased to announce that the Time Series library, submitted by Eric Neibler and developed by him along with Daniel Egloff, Matthias Troyer, David Abrahams and Daniel Wallin using funding provided by Zurcher Kantonalbank has been accepted into boost. As seen in the review, there are some important issues that need to be addressed before the library is ready for boost distribution, however I am confident that this is a very good library. Although the donation of time and funding for Time Series by Zurcher Kantonalbank is laudable and something we would like to encourage more companies to do, the fact that it was donated is not important to the review process. Something that is important is the well-established reputation of the involved lead developer. Eric has a number of very high quality libraries already in boost and has shown his willingness to support them thoroughly and improve them continually. He has been very responsive to user feedback and has an obvious desire to have only high quality work committed to boost with his name on it. For this reason, I am giving him a little more leeway than might be given to a developer without his reputation to address the issues in this review and enter the revised version into boost without a fast tracked second review. The discussions held in this review provided a strong foundation for improving the library, and the variety of domains of expertise represented by the participants shows how broad the desire for a library of this sort is. Most of the points raised in the review have been directly addressed by Eric and discussed until a solution that is acceptable to all involved parties was reached. Eric has acknowledged many as now either fixed in his version or on his To-Do list. However, for the sake of easy reference I will list the major points and my current understanding of what to do about them below. The order in which the points are presented should not be taken as a rating of importance: it is just the order I made notes about them as I reviewed the discussion. 1) Fix the floating-point offset issues – The answer to this may be a change in how they are implemented or a complete scrapping of the floating point offsets as an indexing type. In either case, it would be a good idea to provide a view facade for time series that applies a constant multiplicative factor (or possibly a more general function) to an offset. This may even be a sufficient answer to all the floating-point issues, but it is not yet clear to me (or to anyone else that I noticed in the review) what the best answer is. I expect there will be continued discussion on the developer list to clarify this issue. 2) Polish and include the rolling window average example sent to the list – This is a very good example of a very potent design idiom for this library, and one that would help a lot of people better understand the potential of the library. The use of the circular buffer to collect multiple points is necessary for many filters. It is such a good case that you should consider not only including it in the library, but also making a tutorial out of it that shows how new algorithms can be added to the library. Ideally, many algorithms that are specific to domains that the authors are not specialists in will be donated by users who develop and polish them for inclusion. A very clear tutorial will make this more likely. 3) If the rolling average is not developed as a tutorial example, some other filter should be – There is no way the library can include all the filters in use by programmers in all the various use domains, so the expectation is that writing your own filters will be common. The documentation needs to support this very well. 4) The documentation needs improvement in a number of ways – Reorganization to build from foundational ideas and uses to the more complex issues is important, as is the addition of overview, tutorial and rationale sections, as well as a substantial increase in the number of examples. The learning curve is currently too steep and that seems to be discouraging users who might find the library a very good fit. An important step along the way is to add good examples and good pictures in many places in the documentation. This general note is reinforced in some of the other comments. 5) Small toy examples for each of the algorithms would make the documentation of them far more clear 6) Since you maintain both libraries, it would be useful to add to the documentation for both the Time Series and the Accumulators libraries some notes on how a user should select between them for specific jobs. This came up in discussions before the review, so it is likely to be a problem for more future users. 7) Well chosen pictures can help the readers of this documentation immensely – Especially in your attempts to clarify the documentation of the discretization, the offset and sample values, good pictures will be invaluable. 8) Expand the focus of the documentation so it doesn't appear to a casual reader that this is purely for econometric/financial time series – The library has potential uses in a wide variety of fields, so it is important that potential future users can tell that from even a light skimming of the documentation. 9) The prenamed discretizations seem to cause more problems than they solve – Initial testing of the boost::units library to provide discretization units looks hopeful. If this stands up under testing, not only remove the current prenamed discretizations, but also document using boost::units. A good example could do for this. 10) It is only possible to assign across series with the same discretization type – This should be made more explicit in the documentation and also since a good example of trouble that would be caused by trying to assign series with different discretization types showed up during the review, it might be added to the rationale section so users can see why the choice is a good one. 11) The reasoning behind having unit series for types that have no obvious unit member should also appear in the rationale – In general, there were many good explanations for design choices that should appear in the rationale section. Many of these reasons are compelling but not obvious to a developer who has not tried writing a time series library. Thus they are ideal rationale entries. 12) Currently non-entries in a dense time series are recorded as zeros. This does not seem to be the best idea in all cases. In specific, in some time series, the difference between a value of zero an unknown is very important. Investigate the best choice for a non-entry. Zero gives simple arithmetic for multiplication (though not addition) that gives the unknown value placeholder when multiplied with anything. Some non-zero value would have to have special arithmetic rules, probably. A universal answer may not be feasible. If not, consider making the unknown value a parameter available for the user to set. 13) Consider a name change from delta_series to dirac_delta_series and a link in the documentation to what a Dirac delta function is. 14) Consider renaming the inverse_series to reciprocal_series or some other more illustrative name. 15) Consider reorganizing to expose the storage containers to outside developers – They are likely to be useful for a number of applications aside from time series and this would prevent others from needing to reinvent the wheel as often. 16) Since the usage of time series is spread across a variety of different problem domains, there will be terms that aren't familiar to many of the readers of the documentation. Consider including links to definitions and descriptions for many of the terms used. Paul's example of users who don't know what amortized constant complexity implies is unfortunately not extreme for what you should expect. 17) ordered_inserter is not a great name for the operation it performs - Determine a better name and change to that. Also consider moving to named parameters for the start, stop and value arguments to the ordered_inserter. After all this, the ordered_inserter is a lower level interface than most users want in most circumstances. Add another layer for doing appends on top of this interface, and include a push_back method where sensible for more stl-like syntax. 18) There is a confusion between the template parameter discretization and the constructor parameter discretization. Consider changing the name for the template parameter to something like Discretization_type. 19) Include in the documentation a clear description of what it means for two discretizations to be the same, and point out that the runtime check for this is an assertion, not an exception. Explain why in the rationale section, if nowhere else. 20) A number of reviewers found the concepts of discretization, offset and run to be hard to grasp from the documentation. Work to improve this. 21) The comparison operators for the time_series_facade currently are tied to the time_series_base class. This could be generalized to remove that dependency. If this is done, the documentation should no longer say that time_series_base is the base for all time_series classes, but instead that it provides a convenient base for implementing time_series classes. If this isn't done, the documentation should clearly state the need to inherit from time_series_base. 22) A large number of specific documentation edits were provided in posts by Steven, Paul and Zach. 23) Fix the documentation to clearly show what kind of iterator the series_stl_iterator is. 24) This is outside the scope of this review for a complete answer, but there are questions about the behavior of non-MSVC compilers that define the _MSC_VER macro to masquerade as MS compilers. Is there a way to know which (if any) share the behaviors of the actual MS compilers they pose as, and what is the best way to test for them in code. While the pursuit of this answer is not part of this library, using it is, so if a good answer is found it should become part of this library. 25) Provide versions of the fine_grain and coarse_grain functions that allow for the user to easily provide a sampling function - This is likely to be a very common use case for this library, so it should be well supported. An example in the documentation of how to do this is a good idea. 26) If the review of floating point offsets concludes that they should remain in the library, the dense series reference page should explicitly point out that floating point offsets are not usable with dense series. 27) What is the appropriate handling of zero width points. They are a part of the library in the delta_series, so having them is unavoidable. They should be on firm conceptual ground if possible. 28) Make the existence and use of the set_at function more obvious in the documentation – Reviewers didn't notice it and missed the functionality, so others will, as well. 29) Consider whether it is valuable to provide versions of the transform algorithm that take more than two series as arguments. I can't think of a good application off hand, but there may be some. However, the same reviewer who requested the feature said earlier in the review that he almost never works on more than one series at a time. 30) Provide an example of using a single pass data stream with a circular buffer based algorithm. 31) Consider a better name for the scaled_storage_tag. 32) Consider whether users need access to the metafunctions used to determine return types. If so, consider how they could be exposed in a user friendly way. Now that we've switched everyone back to testing the trunk I though I'd bring this test up. When one is lucky, it fails with a "memory access violation" in *all* platforms. Boost building with CMake

Hi, I noticed the "boost development process / scope" thread on your list. A CMake user posted a link to your discussion. There is significant interest in the CMake community to help boost transition to CMake. Several people on the CMake list have volunteered to help, and Kitware is willing to put about 2 man weeks of effort into the conversion. I think that CMake has all the features to do what you need at this point, but if any bugs or issues are discovered during the process, we can fix them and/or provide work-arounds for the issues. I realize you have not yet decided on moving to CMake, but I thought I would put out this offer so that you could consider "free" support as one of the benefits you will receive from the port to CMake. I can see this happening in two ways. One would be for a CMake developer to create initial cmake files for boost, and get the basics working. Then, the work would be turned over to the Boost community. The other way would be to have a boost developer create the build files with help and support from the CMake community. Either way works for me. Of course, no one will want to do anything unless there is a commitment to actually use CMake. I will stay on this list while you decide, and answer any questions about CMake that may come up. Thanks, and I look forward to working with the boost community in the future. -Bill

Possible bug with mpl::joint_view working on two mpl::maps

Hi all, I have two mpl maps like this: typedef map<pair<int_<1>, int_<42> >, pair<int_<2>, int_<43> >, pair<int_<3>, int_<44> > > Map1; typedef map<pair<int_<4>, int_<44> >, pair<int_<5>, int_<45> >, pair<int_<6>, int_<46> > > Map2; I try to join them using "joint_view" as follows: typedef joint_view<Map1, Map2>::type JointMap; which works fine. Then I do std::cout << at<JointMap, int_<2> >::type::value << "\n"; which gives the following compiler error: error: 'value' is not a member of 'boost::mpl::pair<mpl_::int_<3>, mpl_::int_<44> >' I tried this with gcc 3.4.6 and 4.2 under Linux, Boost version is 1.34.0. It seems "at" returns the entry after the searched entry, and not only the right half, but the complete pair. Has anybody got any hints on this? [Announcement] Boost joins the Software Freedom Conservancy

Effective August 10th, 2007, Boost became a member project of the Software Freedom Conservancy, http://conservancy.softwarefreedom.org. This means that Boost is now part of a legal entity under US law, and tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the US tax regulations. Although this doesn't have much short-term effect, it lets us move forward with BoostCon 2008 planning with less administrative delay. Long-term, being part of a non-profit organization allows Boost to continue to grow and prosper, and to raise money if that becomes useful. After considering the option of starting our own foundation (a huge amount of work), the Boost moderators decided that joining the Software Freedom Conservancy was a better option. The SFC provides the same legal abilities of a foundation at NO cost to the Boost project. It also minimizes the amount of legal and administrative hassles for project members -- allowing us to stay focused on technical matters rather than tax law. In addition, we are free to leave the SFC and create our own foundation at a later time if we decide that the SFC is not serving us well. Boost is not alone -- some other well known open source projects have also joined the SFC (eg: Samba, Wine). For those interested in the details, see a copy of the legal agreement at svn.boost.org/svn/boost/trunk/more/BoostSponsorshipAgreement.pdf I signed for Boost, since I was the founder and am the owner of the boost.org domain name. I'm having problems checking in a couple of file types: *.vcproj // text xml for VC projects *.sln // text xml for VC solutions These don't appear in my local SVN configuration. And the pre-commit script is complaining about them. Could this be fixed please? Robert Ramey

pool allocator question

I have a question about the memory pool allocation that boost implements. Suppose we do the following: std::vector<int, boost::pool_allocator<int> > v; for (int i = 0; i < 10; ++i) v.push_back(-1); And the std::vector<int> is implemented so that it starts out with reserved space of 1 and doubles space every time. So At the end of the above loop v will have size 10 and reserved size 16. Does the boost allocator mean that there will memory arrays lieing around of size 1,2,4,8 that can be reused ? Eg if you do this: std::vector<int, boost::pool_allocator<int> > v; for (int i = 0; i < 10; ++i) v.push_back(-1); std::vector<int, boost::pool_allocator<int> > v2; for (int i = 0; i < 8; ++i) v2.push_back(-1); There will be no system call needed to get more memory - v2 will just reuse the memory in the pool_allocator<int> ? Hello, I have found the following little snippet of code quite useful (it is modeled closely after enable_if, but it enables if the given type has been defined, kind of like enable_if + HAS_XXX but simpler and more general). Advantages of enable_if_defined: * unlike enable_if+HAS_XXX, there is no need to define a separate metafunction for each trait to be tested * enable_if_defined can be used to test any type expression that will work with SFINAE Disadvantages of enable_if_defined: * there is no corresponding disable_if_defined * can't be directly used with MPL - if you need a boolean metafunction corresponding to an enable_if_defined, then you do need to define one. * probably not compatible with as many compilers as enable_if+HAS_XXX Any feedback welcome - if this is not a good approach please tell me why so I can stop using it.
